Unnoticed by those who stand against the Haunter, its last remaining thrall reaches a smaller platform beneath a large trap door.  Frantically, the wretch begins to beat upon it, screaming wordlessly for deliverance from this nightmare.  The man's cries are answered, it seems, for the trap door heaves ponderously open... and the man's screams are abruptly cut short by the iron head of a spear that pierces his throat.  With a soft gurgle, his knees buckle and he falls with a splash into the waters below.

Weak light, and the sound of voices, stream through the open hatchway.

:ooc:  Arbogast is shifting back into Defensive stance (not, I submit, unreasonably) so you guys have the floor.

Quote from: Telcontar on Jun 17, 2021, 08:32 PMHatchyn moved Forward. Space was tight but his friend had already suffered blows and he hoped that the great strength of his people would serve him. He felt the assault on his senses, he knew their strength and power were greater than his own, but here he was and it was up to him to react. If only the light of day were here, to feel the warmth and fight under the sun.

"Though there be no light of day, feel the warmth of my steel shade "

:ooc: That's a piercing blow, but no bold deed goes unpunished when the Nazgûl are abroad.  Hathcyn has to make a Valor test (no TN specified, so I'm using 10 + Attribute level, like we did back here).

Failure means that a) his weapon breaks, b) he loses eight points of Endurance, and c) he gets exposed to the Black Breath again.  Succeed or fail, though, the Nazgûl will take the normal nine Endurance loss.

Hathcyn's eponymous spear plunges into the Haunter's side in a blow that would have slain any mortal man.  Rather than fall, though, the spectre's awful, empty hood gaze turns to him and speaks a word of uttermost doom.  His spear, so long a true companion, is brast asunder as the Haunter grips it with its free hand, shivers of wood slicing into Hathcyn's hands.

Overcome, the Longspear falls.

Arbogast has no time for panic, nor have fear and fatigue dulled his words so that he might fail to see how, so very briefly, the Haunter flinches away from the torchlight coming through the trap door.

As Hathcyn collapses to the planks of the platform, the Fire-watcher lashes out with his axe, trying to hook the lantern, or shatter it and spill its flaming contents.

I'm posting on my phone, so I don't have access to the rules, but I suspect the :g: means success even though I didn't roll any 6-es.  That also means it's a piecing blow, with all that entails.

The Shadow loomed huge over Arbogast, even as the Fire-watcher's axe swung into its gloom. Laying precariously upon the planks, Hathcyn's still form caused the Ranger's heart to leap into panic.

Esgalwen loosed another arrow.

The arrow disappeared into the darkness, but Esgalwen knew naught of its effect.

She knew this presence. They had seen and felt it before in the north hills of the Vale. "Arbogast, come back to us! This foe is too great to face alone."

With a crash of shattering shutters, the Warden's Axe slices through the lantern, splashing flaming oil across the platform.  The iron bands on the strongbox gleam in the sudden light as the flame lick at the feet of the Haunter, drawing from it a shriek of inhuman fear and rage.

The very next second, Esgalwen's arrow strikes home, briefly leaving the Haunter staggering.

These events have brought forth the fierceness and wrath of the ages in the elf maiden.  Her anger twists her visage beautiful and terrifying.  A light seems to shine from her as she closes in against the darkness of the wraith, pitting the two foes against each other once again.  "You have no power here.  I, Laeral, warden of Irime,  and daughter of the Twilight, will see you sent back to your master formless and without power!  Your machinations have failed for Man, Elf, and Dwarf still stand against the abyss!"
