MASS COMBAT
:~~: One of the Mountain-men is slain.
1, 2The allies are hard-pressed to hold the enemy back. One of the mountain-men is wounded – or, if any are already wounded, then one of them is slain. The bastion of Mountain Hall is being pressed - if this is rolled again, the goblins set another building on fire.
3, 4The Mountain-men hold their line and keep fighting.
5, 6, 7,
or 8
The allies fight bravely, pushing the enemy back. Black Goblin blood spills across the stones. If this result is rolled twice in a row, then the allies slay one of the goblins!
9 or 10 One of the goblins are slain.
:g:Two of the goblins are slain.

Esgalwen felt a numbness growing in her hand and arm with each crash of her blade on goblin shield, but she did not cease her efforts. Two of the small wyrm-folk were on either side of her, while three others shot arrows, but fortunately none had succeeded at striking her. Her sword overhead, she slammed it down on the goblin to her left.

The female warrior was pleased as the head of her goblin opponent flew from its body. Her sword had passed cleanly through, missing the iron collar and biting flesh instead. She turned to face her remaining attackers, who seemed to bark like animals as they, too, engaged.

:ooc: That leaves 4 goblins against Esgalwen. I am going to go ahead and roll her opponents now, seeing as she is alone on the switchback and it won't affect the rest of your attacks. BTW - I think she made a tactical error staying up there alone... ;D

Arbogast hears the Ranger's cry as another blow slips past her guard, but pressed as he is there is little he can do.  Men are joining the shieldwall, though, and the goblins' assault has stalled.  He wonders whether the mountain-Men know the shieldwall song, for it will be time to sing it soon.  Yet not fast enough to save his friend!

"Bandy," he calls over the din of battle, "Esgalwen's friends are surely running low on arrows!  Perhaps you should lend them some!"

Then it is back to the fray, for the bloody business of the night is far from done.

:ooc: I haven't been keeping track, but Esgalwen must surely be Weary by now.  I'm not sure whether she can fall back or not (and Arbogast probably can't tell), but we need to help her somehow.  In the meantime, I'm continuing to apply axes to goblins.  With Bandy out of the melee, I'll shift into Open stance.

Bandy nocked another arrow and stepped back behind Arbogast. He took a quick bead on the foes that surrounded the Ranger. The switchback was such that the Hobbit had a clear shot and he ket the arrow fly.

:ooc: Man, I haven't seen Arbogast get a really solid success in this scene - even with all the dice he gets to roll. It has been the same with Esgalwen! I am going to give him the hit, even though the darkness penalty is there - but I am thinking the burning granary is making for some good light now.

I can say that I really am enjoying the TOR mechanics, but one thing I haven't seen it present (and maybe that is because we haven't had THAT many major conflicts) is the heroic capability of heroes to cut a swath through a horde of goblins or orcs. CODA was good at this with their mook rules and the multiple actions a character had available to him in a combat round - you could swing your blade up to 4 times and based on DOS and the mook system, kill up to four bad guys.

Anyway, I have been reading some house rules on the Cubicle 7 forums that I might introduce.

Bandy also hits, but does not get a kill.

So - on the switchback there 4 left (1 with 1 END); at the mine entrance there are 13 left (1 with 3 END)

Lastly, can you guys include the stats of your weapon when you attack? I provide quick buttons in the BBS above to auto-fill a pre-formatted attack roll and if you could use it and fill it in that would be great. I have to always go to some PC sheets to see what the damage, edge, and injury is of your weapons. I don't care if you permanently post it to your Profile signature so it always shows up, instead of using the preformats, but either way it would be greatly appreciated.

 :ooc: Doug, how should I set up the quick buttons, might just add the bow to my sig, as that seems faster.
I would agree that TOR doesnt have the swath mechanic in grained in the system. I think part of that maybe that combat in general is supposed to be personal and trying. However, an idea for a mook system would be to use the Tengwar when dealing with hordes.  A great sucess is a kill, an extro kills two, and a G rune is a special circumstance. That would allow the dice to tell a story, but also give a mook battle swath feel.
THE GAME MUST GO ON!

:ooc: That is a cool idea, Tom!! I will give that some thought, too! I was looking at multi-attack house rules on the forums. I liked one called sweeping attack, as well as Second wind...

Sweeping Blow* Forward Stance
If Hero is paired against 2 or more foes, he can attack all foes with one attack Remove success dice equal to total number of foes (2 or 3); roll one attack with remaining dice Each enemy is hit if attack result is greater than his TN (6+parry)

Second wind Defensive stance
Roll Athletics against TN 14; Success: You regain up to 4 Endurance points (5 on great success, 6 or Heart rating on extraordinary success); can be used only once per encounter

These might be nice to add, along with a few other maneuvers - but I really like your idea!

As for the buttons, they should already be there [see pic]

The one that is a little red circle (Sauron's Eye) is the quick BBC button code for our TOR game. Depending on which you use, you'll get the following (understand I changed the brackets so the code doesn't activate):

to just roll a dice
{roll}{/roll}

to roll a dice against a DC (or TN), record the skill info, and roll a damage amount [For Star Wars and CODA games]
{size=8pt}{b}DC --{/b} {i}skill info{/i}{/size}
{roll}{:00:}{/roll}
{roll}{:dmg:}{/roll}

to roll and provide skill info as well as damage stats for the TOR game
{size=8pt]{b}TN --{/b} {i}skill info{/i}{/size}
{roll}{:00:}{/roll}
:dmg:     edge:     injury:

Use them, or feel free to do what you do, but add your weapons' stats in your signature.

Rorin's hammer fell directly onto the chest of the goblin in front of him, cracking it's flimsy breastplate and biting deep into it's body, the impact threw it backwards into the warriors behind it giving the dwarf a few moments to survey the battlefield and take a deep breath. The shield wall was holding and many goblin bodies lay scattered on the ground. He quickly looked for Grimbeorn, Arbogast, Esgalwen, and Bandy and found all but the Ranger. But before he could worry the hobbit turned and sent an arrow to where she stood fighting. Content that everything was as in order as it could be Rorin braced to meet his next foe.

 :ooc:

Doug, I really like the idea of adding several maneuvers like that into our rules. Because, at the moment it seems that combat (For Rorin at least) mostly consists of just sitting at the most defensive stance that you can still reliably hit the TN for and swinging. The addition of some extra abilities with pros and cons for different situations would make the combat more fun I think. But in general I'm really liking this TOR system too!

:ooc: Cool!

I have attached the maneuvers by stance that were proposed. You guys read through them and give me some thoughts.

:ooc: That's mighty decent of you!  Arbogast isn't really that great a front-line fighter, so I'm concentrating on making him an effective support character.  That said, it occurs to me that an Intimidate action using his decent Battle skill could wreak havoc with a force of craven goblin-types.
