Across the hillside, the speaking of the name of Elbereth drives the strength from the arms of many of the orcs.  Yet still they fight on, heedless of the loss of their mounts and the melting away of their captive burden-bearers, for the lust for destruction is stronger within them than that for precious things and here there are yet many to slay.  With terrible abandon, they swing their swords and scream curses in tongues not known by wholesome Men.  Before Gwaithlim looms the largest of the orcs, its blade high in mockery of his own, before it brings it down...

Gwaithlim is ready for the blow and parries it easily, though this leaves him open to a grievous strike to his exposed leg that he pulls away from not fast enough to avoid a terrible gash as orc-forged iron tears at skin and muscle alike and sends a jolt of pain through his whole body, followed by a dull, cold throbbing that speaks of nameless poison.  In fear now, and for the first time in several score years, for his life, the Elf gives ground, his ageless brow furrowed with the effort of remaining on his feet, before seeing a chance for a counter-blow.

Esgalwen, her breath tearing at her lungs and her shoulder aflame with the pain of her arrow-wound, is close enough to see the sweat dripping from Hathcyn's beard as he and the torn-faced orc trade blows.  Then the orc gives a great heave with its sword, hewing like a farmer's sickle.  Though Hathcyn blocks the blade, the strength of it sends him staggering sideways, his spear-shaft deeply notched.  It will not bear another blow like that, she thinks, surprising herself with the sharpness of the thought.

:ooc: Weariness isn't slowing these orcs down a whole lot!  Both Hathcyn and Gwaithlim lose another eight Endurance.

Gwaithlim will shift into Defensive stance and make a no-fancy-stuff sword attack on the Thick-muscled orc (TN 16):

The thrust is steady and strong as his aching body can make it, and might have felled a lesser foe, but the orc turns to one side and takes the blow to a crude armour plate with a grunt, hatred for the ancient foe of its kind burning dark in its eyes.

:ooc: Gwaithlim will spend Hope to turn that into a Great success.  The orc will spend Hate to drop the damage by four.

In other news, Esgalwen and Luindîs arrive this round!  C'mon Doug - show these guys how it's done!

Seeing her elf companion hard-pressed by two of the mountain orcs, Esgalwen ran in to the fray. Her voice erupted in a cry of challenge, as she swept Nimronyn around in a slash at one of the foes.

The Ranger's cry swiftly blends with the shocked bellow of the orc as NImronyn carves open its belly and spills its guts upon the stony ground.  For those not closely watching, though, the noise is lost among the clashing of arms, the hoarse voices of those still fighting and the screams and groans of those who shall fight no more.  Gwaithlim has not the time even to nod his thanks at his companion before he is forced to lift his sword, its blade like lead in his hands, to defend his life once again.

Luindîs vaults up on to a nearby stone, caring not for the slickness of her hand as she notches an arrow and surveys the field.  The captives having withdrawn, she can now see the orcs clearly but Esgalwen and Gwaithlim move back and forward, side to side as they protect themselves and each other.  No good shot there.  Neither can she find an opening to send a shaft towards the chaotic melee that rages nearby between Gerold's warriors and the rest of their foes.

The ruined face of the orc facing Hathcyn, however, is wide open as the Longspear stumbles away, seeking to gain some room for his longer weapon.  Her movements quick and sure from many wild hunts in the dimness beneath Mirkwood, she aims, draws and shoots...

:ooc: Technically, Luindîs should be waiting for Hathcyn to take his action but I'm not standing so much on ceremony at the moment.  She's shooting when there's shooting to be done (TN 16):

Even on his last legs, Hathcyn is a wily and dangerous foe!  As the orc stumbles from the impact of Luindîs' arrow, he thumps the butt of his spear into its knee, and its fall is followed closely by the descent of the Foresthelm's spearhead.  Never again will it rise to trouble the Free Peoples.
