The panicked shouts of the crowd surround the Companions in all directions as the flow of traffic along Bridge Street dissolves into a chaotic mob.  Balin is no longer anywhere to be seen.  From a nearby doorway a lanky youth, his face covered with a hood and scarf, darts out, one hand extended to grasp at the fallen casket.

If Grimbeorn sees the boy grabbing for the casket, he shouts.  "Oi, boy!  Be off with ye lest you lose that hand if not more."  Grimbeorn remains next to their ruse, protecting it as he vowed.  He goes full defensive, protecting the casket and anyone near him.

For a moment Hathcyn contemplated subduing the man who faced him. The wicked blow he took however, drove the thought from him. He would not lay dead on the planks of Laketown out of kindness to an ancient enemy.

He gave ground to get his spear back in position and struck.

Arbogast sees the new runner appear and make for the casket.  Hard-pressed as he is, though, he could not leave Esgalwen's side to obstruct this new threat even were he minded to.  Instead, he moves his shield this way and that, seeking an opening in which to completely disarm his foe.

Seeing that the enemy archer was quite gifted in his talent, Esgalwen nocked an arrow anew and drew back on her bow. She could not let him loose another shaft of his own. Her mind focused on her target - she shut out all of the noise and confusion around her.

Heedless of the presence of Grimbeorn and Hathcyn by the sides of the casket, the youth skids to a halt before it and makes a frantic grab for a carven handle.  At the same time, the Viglunding shifts his axe to his off hand and bends to take another.  A second later and they have straightened and begin to drag the blood-spattered casket away.  Above the street, the bowman ignores his new injury and prepares to shoot again, this time lowering his aim towards Grimbeorn.

A cry of feral rage sounds from behind the two Beornings as Arbogast hooks a second knife out of the Dorwninish man's hand and sends it clattering to the timbers.  As Grimbeorn watches, the southerner, with barely a pause for breath, streaks to where his first weapon lies and snatches it up.  When the Wolfslayer returns his attention to the matter before him, he sees that the broad-shouldered spearman has interposed himself between him, Hathcyn and the casket.  He makes brief lunges at both men, using the length of his own weapon to keep them at bay.

:ooc: The spearman will spend a point of Hate to Stand his Ground (as per the Adventurer's Companion, p 109).  Any attacks against him next round will roll the Feat die (the d12) twice and use the worst result.

Grimbeorn's elven shield shakes like a drum-skin as a long, black-feathered shaft buries its head in the hardened wood.  The spearman's thrust, at least, is half-hearted, and Hathcyn easily swats the shorter spear off line before it can threaten his lord and companion.

Somewhere nearby, the screams of the people of Bridge Street have reached the ears of the Lake-Town watch, whose shouts can dimly be heard as they press their way through the throng.  Where they are, though, and how far, is hard to determine.
