Hi everyone.  I asked tomcat for a table chatter thread in case we wanted to bounce ideas about without disrupting the IC flow.  Like Yaweh to Moses, he provideth!

Since I'm new to the board, I thought I should introduce myself.  I'm an early middle-aged Australian (hence the late posting times).  Gamer for... holy crap, 25 years now, but although I've read and salivated over the TOR line for a while, I've never managed to get a game going.  I have a feeling I'm going to really enjoy this.

Hi all. I am new to the board as well. I played D&D and a little MERP for a many years but have been on a two-decade hiatus after I moved away from my regular group. I am just getting back to RPGs with TOR. It is good to see the Commonwealth so well represented here. I am an expat Canadian living in Pennsylvania. I am really enjoying it so far.

Hello all, Matt here!  I've been gaming with Doug for a long time!  You might also recognize our handles if you were fans of Decipher's LOTR RPG as we put together the fan webzine for the game that was produced for about 5 yrs.  Just getting into TOR now as I am a LOTR completist ;)

Here's to a great game!

Welcome guys!

It has been a long time since introductions were made around here! Nice having new players - I hope you guys stick around for the long haul, because the story just seems to keep going. Anyway, I am Doug. Live in Ohio and have been gaming since about 1980. It all started with D&D Basic and went from there. I used to run a live table along with these boards, but when my wife and I moved north from Florida, the time necessary to get a group of friends together to play seemed to disappear. Fortunately, I had started our forums prior, when the LotR Trilogy was in theaters and Decipher had picked up where MERP left off.  As Matt said, he joined me on my boards to play in what was then, The Triumph of the Witch-king (now called Chronicles of the North). Shawn and Kory were there, too, and everyone has stuck around and kept these boards busy. Others staple players like Ayrn and Tom joined later, but also have contributed to the success of our games.

Glad you guys are here and I look forward to seeing how Darkening of Mirkwood goes. I am still not 100% sold on TOR mechanics, but I am sure I will come around to them. For some reason, if I find them too clunky, I may petition you guys to move to CODA. We shall see.

Tomcat, you're a martial artist too?  I did some TKD back in the day, but got into dance instead.  I got back into martial arts via a friend back in 2006, and have been training ever since (bar a few months' break after each of my kids were born).  I'm actually teaching an aiki jutsu class tonight!

Re the mechanics, I urge you to give them a chance.  Like I said above, I've not had a chance to really take them out for a spin, and the chance to do so was one of the key things that brought me here.

Yea, I started in Karate back in college, but nights out at the bars looking for women got more attention at the time, so I didn't go far. Still, always loved martial arts.

So, last year I decided I need to do something to keep my heart healthy and took up TKD. My son and I both are working on our purple belts, right now, and I am really enjoying it. I don't think I will take it to the point of competition - at least not for me at my age - but definitely for my son, if he wishes to pursue it.

As for the TOR mechanics, no worries - I will see this through. Besides, we already have a CODA game going.

My best friend from school is in the same boat - he's working at Carnegie Mellon Uni at the moment.

I will, of course, expect you to wave if you see him.   ;)

Give me a bit on my next post for DoM. I need to look into combat and also to read up on skills; plus I need to try and find some info on designing stats for common challenges such as those posed by a normal wild animal.

No problem tomcat. I am in my third TOR campaign and I have found that once you become familiar with the mechanics the play clips along nicely. That said, I still find encounters a rather clunky as I try to balance rolls and role playing. You may already know about the Cubicle 7 forum thread on wild animals, but here is the link just in case http://forums.cubicle7.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3445&hilit=wild+animals.

I'll probably see him at the meetings.  ;) I'm at Moravian College in eastern PA about an hour north of Philly.

Doug, you planning on something regarding fellowship focus, fellowship pool, fellowship roles?

For what it's worth, I see fellowship roles, foci etc. developing pretty organically as the characters get to know each other (though I'll put in an early nomination of Arbogast as the party scout).  Our Loremaster may, of course, have other plans.

As for the fellowship pool, we should be kicking off with five points (4 current PCs, +1 for a Hobbit).  Tomcat, is it okay for us to go ahead and mark up our sheets accordingly, or should we be waiting until the characters have bonded a little?

We have one more PC - potentially two - to introduce into our story before I have you guys doing that. Disench4nted is finishing up school (graduating) and would like to join us. Ayrn is putting the finishing touches on his PC and I will be bringing her in very soon.

So... to answer the questions:

You guys can go ahead and fill in your Fellowship Pools, but the other two items I have to 1) read about what they mean mechanically (-D , and 2) I will let you fill these in once done with all PC's.

I think five characters is a good number to have in our company - and I might introduce an NPC, if the story gets bogged down and I need to help with keeping things rolling.
