Title: Morning discoveries
Post by: tomcat on Sep 25, 2006, 11:09 AM
OOC: I do not know if Galudir was intending on coming back to the Company to camp alongside or if he was gonna sleep somewhere out in the woods. If he did come back, then I can edit any discrepancies in this post. - Doug

Nain set the fire as the rest of the Company prepared a quick camp; it was their intention to salvage the night and get what rest they could. Though they had all drank from the fountain and many felt refreshed, still sleep was needed so that there would be strength of body come the new day. A few of the Company members laid down on their bedrolls while others sat around Nain's fire to discuss matters of travel, and also to wait for the adrenaline rush of the escape to ebb so that sleep would come. Only the surrounding fog and the haunting clatter of the chimes, hanging in the trees not far away, paid tribute to the soft conversation of the friends.

The fog was a boon companion to both the rogue and the Lorien Elf who quietly followed him. Galudir was able to achieve both of his goals - the procurement of food in the form of a rabbit, and a fresh water stream that ran down from the high mountains towards the lake below.

Seriand watched the Man - having drank from the fountain of his kin, the Elf had plenty of vigour to maintain his vigil throughout the rest of the evening.

*****

Morning came with a burst of sunshine over the Misty Mountains to the east. The fog that had blanketed the night quickly burnt away except over the lake and in shadowed areas where the light was yet to reach. The chirping of birds and creak of frogs that inhabited the valley lake below added a pleasant sound of life to the world that had been so muted during the night just passed.

Durgil and Fengel both went to the ridgeline to look at the village below to make sure that no new plans were being brewed by their former captors; but life looked normal, the Dunman attending to their daily duties. Smoke rose from cooking fires and the two companions even sat and watched as two Dunlending hunters passed them by in search of the day's meals.

For the rest of the Company, the view about them was breathtaking. Above them and the trees, on its spur of rock, sat the Elven gazebo. Around them was the whispering pine woods and needle and fern covered ground. The mountain peaks shone white and the sky was royal blue above. Each member of the Company did not remember when they felt so refreshed - perhaps in Rivendell?

Durgil marveled at the fact that he no longer felt sick and feverish and he quietly thanked Edrahil for his administrations along with the clean flowing waters that came from the ruin. It seemed that all things touched by Elves retained some semblance of permanence.

With everyone back to full health, it was time to decide what was to be done...

Galudir awoke in the morning, refreshed but somewhat hungry again. He settled for another draught from the swift stream, from which he also refilled his water skin, before continuing up to the gazebo once again. He was quite happy with his decision to leave the ruin; though he risked losing the party he could not have slept comfortably in that haunted place. Even as he climbed the steps once again, his pace marked him as hesitant and distracted. Once at the top he could see that the companions were awake as well, though it seemed to him that one might be missing he quickly dismissed the thought.

"Well then, this notion to investigate belongs to the Company. I am merely but an attachment to guarantee good credit, so I patiently await instruction."
Galudir sat down on a stone tablet that may have been a bench at one time and leaned toward the party in a way that suggested that he was, in fact, not patient.

Seriand stood vigil throughout the night, watching over the newest...addition to the company.   Whether or not this rogue could be trust was of the utmost concern to him at this time.  As night passed and the sun rose the elven scout continued to sit in utter silence, watching the stealthy rogue as he slept and thinking about the adventure thus far.

Awakened by the rays of sunlight Seriand became more alert and watched as the rogue made his way back to camp.  Seriand waited for a few minutes, watching from the trees, before he too made his return carrying a some berries he had found nearby that would do little ot fill him up.

Clearing his throat, Dirnhael towards the brazier they had seen due to the magic of the Elves.
"It seems that heading that way would be a good place to start," he said while pointing in that direction.

He looked around to see if anyone suggested otherwise, then muttered, "Let us be gone, then. I am eager to be further away from the Dunmen."

Edrahil was pleased that Dirnhael had chosen to investigate the mystery before continuing with their journey. In the elf's mind it was the right thing to do despite their experiences with the Dunmen. He nodded to his comrade and mounted, anxious to see the other ruin across the lake.

Durgil, not really caring the direction in the short term, was just happy to be back to normal for the most part.  Encountering the Dunmen, though did weigh on his conscience... they reminded him of too many people he'd encountered outside of Fornost or other large settlements and strongholds.  There was a despair and oppresiveness that clung in the air around these people as if they were not happy with their lives ... as if they were going through the motions just to survive.  But maybe his own thoughts and fears were being projected through them.

The camp was broken down with soft conversation between the companions and their gear was restowed on the perspective horses. Using his axe, Nain folded dirt over the fire a few times to snuff the embers completely and then he walked to his pony. He still disliked riding the beasts, but he had to admit the animal had grown on him. He listened as it crunched on the apple he fed it and then turned to the sound of Dirnhael mounting up. The Dwarf followed suit and the Company was once again on the road. Nain wondered where it would lead them now.

They rode along the ridge line and then down to the lake below, the Dunlending settlement not 500 meters away. Fengel looked over his shoulder towards the thin wisps of smoke that rose from their homes. He knew they were being watched, but nothing showed itself as a threat.

Following the shoreline to the western ridge of the valley, they once again climbed, looking for evidence of another Elven ruin. The pine trees that were prevalent throughout the valley grew in abundance here as well and they weaved about as the forest became more dense. But then it opened into a wide clearing of scrub grass and bare rock - the mountain face rose to their north.

The Company looked about and though nothing stood out in the area, there was evidence of tumbled stones and what appeared to be marble. The keen eyes of the Elves could immediately see that an Elven home once sat here - maybe it had been something more. Higher up in the clearing, the brazier could be easily seen leaning at an angle. Around it were broken stone columns carved in the organic stylings of the Elves. Riding over to it, they all noticed that the ground had been recently scorched. The companions began to dismount to investigate.

Nain slid from Jethro's saddle and walked to where the earth was blackened. The Dwarf knew fire and could easily tell that the grass and dirt had been scorched by an intense fire - it had happened very recently. In the center of the burned area was the old wrought-iron brazier but no fuel could be seen, or ashes for that matter, that would give clue to how such a fire could have been possible. The brazier was blackened too, but Nain could easily see how age and corrosion had bent the elegant metal-work out of shape.

Naught else could the Dwarf perceive from the previous night's ghostly flare.

OOC: I do not know if I left you all stumped, as there has been little posting here... then again, maybe everyone is very busy? Anyway, any more clues will need further investigation to find (if there are any?), but I do not want you all to just roll me an Observe or Search test - I want you to tell me where your character is looking, and what they may be looking for. If magic is employed, I want to know what Edrahil is trying to divine.

That is, of course, if they wish to go further with any of this search.

Galudir sluggishly dismounted from his horse with a loud sigh. He began feeling that he was spending far too much time with the company and so he endeavored to make that known. Walking toward the blackened land, his eyes spanned the scene. Once near the brazier he kicked aside ash, dirt, and rocks to see if any clues were hidden underneath. He laughed slightly at his actions and looked up to address the company.

"Yes, ash and dirt covering what I gather is another elven ruin. What are we looking for here, other than a souvenir perhaps?"

Dirnhael looked about the area, hoping to find some sort of identifying marks or items that might help them tell whether friend or foe was here.
Title: Re: Morning discoveries
Post by: tomcat on Oct 04, 2006, 10:34 AM
The Company spread out over the area looking for some clue besides the burnt ground around the brazier. No comments were made in reply to Galudir's sarcasm, or maybe it was blunt truth? Dirnhael wondered. Still, there was for most of them a desire to solve the riddles of the valley below, if not to help the Dunlendings.

The ground was rough and tumbled rocks lay scattered around patches of tough scrub grass. To the immediate west, the ground rose again and more pine trees grew thick, shading the area under their boughs until it was too dark to see. Time passed as they tried to find some form of trail, or any other clue to help them on their way, but naught could be seen.

Disappointedly Dirnhael turned to Fengel and shook his head. The Éothraim returned the gesture and both Men moved to their horses. The day was reaching noon and if they tarried much longer, it would get past the point of making any good travel use of it.

Durgil and Edrahil moved outside of the ring of the old signal post. The young Dúnadan noble could see the Elf to his left in his peripheral vision, just at the eaves of the woods, and he spoke to his friend, "You see anything, or do you have any arts that could potentially divine an answer?"

It was the Edrahil's response that startled Durgil; not because of what was said, but because he heard the reply coming from his right hand side!

"I see nothing," said the Elf.

Durgil quickly glanced right and saw the mage moving about the rubble, and then quickly swung his gaze towards the woods and the figure he had mistook for Edrahil was disappearing into the treeline, all the time it gestured for him to follow. The Dúnadan turned back to Edrahil and by the surprised look on the Elf's face, Durgil knew he saw it too!

Edrahil moved over the rubble as quickly as he could, following Durgil towards the mysterious elf. He did his best to keep the 'apparition' in sight, if that was what it truly was. Motioning for the others to follow, he said "Can you see it? Over there in the trees."

"Great! Another Elf."

Nain begins following the two into the woods.
Title: Re: Morning discoveries
Post by: tomcat on Oct 05, 2006, 07:20 AM
Durgil moved quickly off towards the figure that walked under the trees and soon found himself under the soft shade; around him was nothing but empty wood. Behind him, Edrahil and Nain both hurried after, the former coming up to the Dúnadan to be followed moments later by the latter. There was no sign of any person, apparition, or otherwise; only the hushed sounds of the forest.

The trio stood there looking about when Edrahil perceived under the needle-covered forest floor, set marble stones. Some were cracked; some were completely buried by the earth and leaves, but most showed the Elf what they were, an old path laid here by his kin centuries past.

Pointing the way, Edrahil now led the group along the path, the remaining companions having caught up with the trio with all the mounts in tow. The Company continued for at least a quarter mile and the mountainous terrain began to pitch down, the sound of roaring water in the distance.

The stone path came to a steep drop and broken stairs could be seen going down, angling first right and then left to the wooded bottom below. The drop would not be manageable unless the stairs were taken and there would be no way the horses could follow.

OOC: Actions - and/or - Dialogue?

The stairs descend a total of 45' to the forest floor below. Due to their condition, should anyone descend the stairs, I need a Nimbleness or Climb test TN 10 for each of 15' of descent. He stood up and ambled toward them, following their path through the trees until he heard the unmistakable sound of rushing water. On his next step, he slips and continues to slide down the slick stone steps while managing to retain his balance down the rest of the way, unable to stop himself until he lands full force at the bottom in an embarrassing heap.  Weakly he calls up, "You might want to use a rope."

Edrahil could immediately see the structure... or what was left of it. Draped in ivy and with a carpet of fern, the house's walls were still standing in a few places, columns stood in others, not 40 feet from the stairs. The path from the base of the precipice continued on to disappear in the overgrown ruin. The organic architecture was still quite obvious to the eye, and they all knew it had been created by the hands of the Eldar. The Sindar mage thought it must have been very beautiful once upon a time.

The cliff wall that rose behind him continued back towards the rising height of the mountain and the roaring sound of a waterfell could be heard, and the fine mist of it could be felt and seen hanging in the air. The area felt like a grotto, although it was no true cave. As the Elf moved closer, he heard Durgil following along, while the rest of their comrades came down behind them. Edrahil looked over his shoulder to Durgil and pointed at what used to be an archway, all the while the Dúnadan flexed and rubbed his aching body.

Through the arch and beyond, weaving between the trees that had sprung up within the old house, the two walked further. The falls were now revealed to them. The fast moving ice melts tumbled down over green moss covered stones, and splashed into a very large clear pool that would have made up the back side of the Elven home. Edrahil could see the remains of the wood that once made a deck - it probably had been a back porch area over the water.

Never one to alter the land around them to any great degree, still the Noldor Lord who would have once lived here probably had removed some of the tumbled stone so that the falls would have been less violent. "Then again, thought Edrahil, "Maybe not."

What Edrahil had yet to reveal to anyone was that he felt an old power emanating from the place... not threatening, but still present.

Lost in his memory, Edrahil heard Durgil speak, "Edrahil, look!"

Edrahil turned to the noble youth and looked to where he pointed. Laying amongst the soft ferns and blanketed in mists, was a Dunlending youth. A girl!

They then noticed that she was not alone. Other forms laid about, although it was evident with some that they had succumbed to the sickness that was plaguing those folk.

Edrahil wondered how, and why, they had all come to this place. He remembered the elder speaking of his folk disappearing in the night. The Elf was then struck with another realization... yellow flowers grew close to the forest floor all about the ancient home - Ephanial flowers!

Galudir remained above ground with the horses; he wanted no part of ancient elven mysteries. Finding a soft patch of ground, he sat down and laid back on an unyielding tree trunk. Uprooting a clump of grass, he tore the blades into pieces and tossed the mulch over his back. The fresh smell of the torn grass filled his nose while the low forest sounds soothed his mind. It was peaceful, but dull. Too alert to sleep and too bored to sit and wait, the young rogue walked over to the cliff and called out to the explores below. "Have you found anything yet?"

As Fengel came to the bottom of the stair, he saw Edrahil and Durgil move onward into what appeared to have been a structure.  He looked at Dirnhael, "Those two, it seems to me, are a bit too curious."  Fengel then followed the elf.  His wariness for the spectures began to fade, as he walked through the archway.  Upon his first seeing the falls, Fengel was impressed by its beauty.  He again was amazed at the elven ability to find such wonderful places to build their homes.  His wonderment was broken as he looked to what Durgil was pointing out.  When he saw the little girl lying there he began to run to her side.  Then he noticed the others that looked quite dead.  Fengel stopped suddenly.  Was this the dreaded plague that they had already fought or some other sickness.  He turned to Edrahil, "What can we do here for these people?  How and why are they here?"
Title: Re: Morning discoveries
Post by: tomcat on Oct 10, 2006, 11:25 AM
Edrahil kneeled down by the young girl and placed his hand upon her forehead. She was burning with fever and her body was soaked with sweat, even though she shook from chills. The Sindar then reached his hand out towards a golden yellow flower that grew close to the ground, plucking the bud from its stem.

Holding it up to Durgil, Edrahil spoke, "It is Ephanial, a flower that bloomed in the ancient lands of Beleriand, but had survived that land's destruction. I did not know the flowers grew in this land. Elrond only spoke of those that grew in the north lands of the old Dúnedain kingdoms."

Those Company members that had made the original journey from Cardolan nodded in memory of the counsels of the Master of Rivendell the winter before. Dirnhael took count and realized that only three of that original company remained.

Edrahil continued, "T'would seem it was brought forth by the Noldor and it bloomed within the realm of Hollin as well."

He set the flower down and his attention fell back on the sick around them, "Yes Fengel, it would appear that the Dunlendings suffer from the same sickness that ravaged the north. I can only surmise that something called these people to this place to find their cure.. though what called them, I cannot venture to guess."

It was then that the distant voice of Galudir was heard, descending from above, inquiring about their find. Dirnhael turned and yelled in reply, "We have found the missing folk from the Dunlending settlement! We may need more assistance... we'll let you know!"

Around the Company, there were a total of eleven Dunlending folk, of which only three still lived.

Edrahil removed his cloak and placed it over the young girl. Turning to his comrades, the elf said "There is naught to be done for the others, but these three might yet be saved. Gather some buds from the yellow plants and bring them to me. I will need the saddlebags from my horse." He turned his attention to his patients, hoping that there was enough time to counteract the effects of the plague.

OOC: Hey Brian, first of all no problem with the delay... I hope you were not upset by my posting for Edrahil this last post.

Second, to answer your question... the Ephanial plant is brewed and administered. The mechanics of it are as follows:

The Plague causes the loss of Vitality until the person dies (at 0 Vitality), slowly weakening as it fills their lungs with fluids. Fevers are a symptom along with dehydration.

1) Sick character loses 1d3 Vitality per day, may make a Stamina Test TN 20 to negate the Vitality loss. Though they may successfully avert the loss, they are still carrying the sickness. The character may spend no more than half of his Courage points on any test. When a character is reduced to 0 Vitality, they expire.

- an additional Stamina Test TN 15 to avert that days Vitality loss; Though they may successfully avert the loss, they are still carrying the sickness.
- allows victim to make a Stamina Test TN 20 to rid themselves of the plague (see below*)
- sick character need only make one roll for both tests above and may apply results based upon the modified die roll
- If Healing test is a Superior Success, reduce above tests by 1
- If Healing test is a Extraordinary Success, reduce above tests by 3
- Each Healing test is a full days care

3) For each loss of 1/5 of a character's Vitality reduces them 1 wound level

4) With Ephanial, all tests are reduced by 5

5) *The plague requires an extended Healing test to cure. When the Healing (Treat Sickness) TN 15 test is successful and then the character makes the additional TN 20 Stamina test, if it also is successful, the character gains back 1 Vitality point. When the character has been restored to his original Vitality, he will be cured of the plague.

6) After being cured, the character needs to roll 1d3 and permanently reduce their Vitality. This is a 'scarring' from the disease.

Example of tests needed:

Day 1:

Sick character makes a Stamina TN 20 test- Roll (2d6)+5: 3,6, +5 Total: 14 FAILED, loses 1d3 Vitality

Healer comes along and makes a Healing Test TN 15 Roll (2d6)+8: 3,6, +8 Total: 17 SUCCESS

This grants the victim an additional Stamina Test TN 15 to negate the Vitality loss for that day, plus a chance (TN 20) to beat the plague. If the success had been greater, the healer may have conveyed additional bonuses.

If Ephanial is in the hands of the healer, all of the test's TN's the healer must attempt are reduced by 5.

The young child's Vitality is currently a 4, her Stamina is +1.

OOC: Im sorry I don't recall if the dead remain contagious, so someone stop him if it is so...

While the others see to the living, Durgil shall tend to the dead.  He calls up to Galudir for his assistance.  "We have nothing to cover or prepare the dead with, but they must be returned to their people.  Help me bring them up out of here."  Hefting one of the bodies to his shoulder and grabbing the rope to steady him, Durgil begins the slow task of moving the dead out.

OOC: Hey Matt, the bodies will be contagious still, but I like the honor that Durgil is paying the deceased... so, maybe the magic of Middle-earth will grace the company here to assist them in returning the fallen to their families.  ;)

Then again, maybe this is considered an ancient form of biological warfare in an insidious plot to bring the Dunlending settlement down!  :o

hee hee hee....

No, we'll go with the former.  :D

[EDIT:] I am going to wait on Nikitas post to see if he will be an active participant before I move this on with a new post.

OOC: Hey Brian, first of all no problem with the delay... I hope you were not upset by my posting for Edrahil this last post.

Second, to answer your question... the Ephanial plant is brewed and administered.

[ooc] No problem posting for Edrahil ... feel free to jump in when you need to. :)

Will Edrahil make a separate healing roll for each of his three patients? (too bad I used up all my remaining courage on the Sense Power roll :()

[ic]

As he tends to the three Dunlendings who still live, Edrahil speaks to his comrades. "We must get a fire going. It will warm the three that are afflicted, and I need it to prepare the Ephanial. Nain, your skills would be most helpful."

Climb Test TN 10:
1d12= -
Strength (+2), Skill Ranks (+2), Rope (+5)
0+2+2+5= 9

Given that Galudir will not fall even if he rolls a 1 I didn't make any rolls, let me know if you want me to roll anyway TC.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once Galudir heard the news from the company he started to climb down the cliff. "Well dwarf, what do you say we go make ourselves useful?"

Carefully sliding down the rope, Galudir arrived in the ancient elven home where the rest of the company had found the Dunlendings. When Durgil asked for the rogues' assistance, Galudir was rather hesitant, "Move the dead bodies? Maybe it would be best to leave them where they are? It's a nice enough resting place don't you think?" From the look on Durgil's face Galudir could see that he did not agree at all, and so the rogue began helping the noble.

"This is a place for the living, not the dead.  Besides, if I were them, I'd want my family the chance to lay me to rest properly," replied Durgil.  Hearing Nain's request, "Bah, go help Nain.  I'll do this myself."
