Physical Modifiers (complications):

Hathcyn scrambled once more as deftly as he could to reach the shelf above the party. He had no desire for his broken and twisted body to join the scree of fallen rock and to lay bleaching, if bones did bleach, in the Misty Mountains.

He made no progress and clung like a a moth to the rock face. His long spear constantly seeming to swing to the wrong place.

In her thoughts, Esgalwen urged Hathcyn on even as she peered into the mists to discern one of the trolls and keep Arbogast from being attacked alone.

The Ranger instinctively reached for another arrow even as her current shot took flight. Whether it had struck, Esgalwen could not know.

:ooc: I am not going to spend a :vv:, as they are valuable to a Dúnadan - but if someone wants to offer up a Bonus die, this attack is worth 13 :<3: loss, maybe more.

Up to you all.

All the commotion above distracted the elf and he wasn't able to get a better bead for his shot so he gives his best on this shot.

:ooc: No - the bonus advantage dice that Arbogast and Hathcyn earned on their successful Battle rolls at the onset of the encounter. You are able to give those to other players, if they need them to succeed at a roll. I am 1 away from a successful hit, that will do 13 :<3: loss - or a potential 19, if I rolled another :%: .

The ranger's shot hits the troll square in the stomach, piercing its stony skin and lodging deep in the knotted muscle beneath.  Shocked to find itself so assailed, the troll drops the stone it held, sending it bouncing down the side of the bluff to narrowly miss Hathcyn's side.  The Longspear hisses a curse and wills strength into his cold fingers as he scrambles to find safe purchase for his feet.  As the beast snaps the shaft off with a wail of pain, Arbogast pulls himself over the edge of the bluff, unslinging his shield and axe even as he dashes toward the distracted beast.

:ooc: Arbogast will stay in Defensive stance, because he can tell both trolls are going to be on him the moment he shows himself, and attack the Stony troll.  Stony will lose 10 Endurance from Esgalwen's arrow, and a point of Hate for its Hideous Toughness.

Without a word, the Fire-watcher brings the Warden's Axe down upon the troll's knee in a stroke that would have cut clear through the joint of any lesser creature.  Instead, with a loud ringing noise and (he will later swear) a readily-visible spark the axe turns aside, its Dwarf-wrought runes proving unequal to the rock-like hide of a Mountain troll.

:ooc: Even with the :~~:, that's still a hit, and an extraordinary success to boot.  Once again, though, Hideous Toughness is enough to soak up the entire thing (though Stony does have to spend another Hate point).

:ooc: These are some tough creatures! The one troll we've been attacking is reducing our damage to nothing and he still has 6 :@: left!  (-D

And the other one hasn't even been scratched. This is going to be a serious test.

Atop the bluff, Arbogast can now see the brutish faces of the two trolls, one with long, cracked tusks jutting from its lower jaw, the other's mouth almost hidden by a vast growth of moss.  The former hefts another stone in its hands before casting it blindly down the mountainside to where it no doubt believes a foe to be.  The latter, however, has one closer to hand, and it turns with shocking speed toward where the Fire-watcher now gives ground, his shield raised in anticipation of a crushing blow.  Its roar at this trespasser in its territory is strong enough almost to slap the shield back in Arbogast's face, and carries with it the stench of rotten meat.  Then the troll is upon him, and no room has he for thought of anything but living through the next few moments...

:ooc: First things first - Arbogast needs to make a Fear test (which, at TN 14, isn't likely to be a problem, but still)
:00: 1d12 : 7, total 7
Rolled 5d6 : 6, 2, 6, 3, 1, total 18

Then the Tusked troll will throw a rock at Gwaithlim (TN 21, including the mist penalty)...
:00: 1d12 : 5, total 5
Rolled 2d6 : 4, 4, total 8

... and the Stony troll will try to beat the Fire-watcher into Woodman salsa (TN 18):

Twice as tall as a strong warrior stands the troll, and much greater in girth besides.  Like a landslide is its onslaught, its fists like crashing boulders, and the Fire-watcher can do nothing but duck, dodge and fall back into whatever ground lies behind him.

:ooc: Stony will spend another Hate to activate its Horrible Strength, for 18 total damage.  Arbogast will let himself get knocked back (see TOR, p 177) to halve the damage at the cost of losing his action next round.
