Like the strike of a serpent, Wulfdan's hand lashes out and catches the boy by his dark hair.  The youth struggles, but Wulfdan brings the pommel of his sword down upon his temple, opening a gash in his swarthy skin and provoking a scream of terror.  The tall stranger tries to raise his spear in defence of his companion, but it is clearly leaden in an arm drained by long flight of any strength.  Barely heeded, another Viglunding, bearing the cruel look of a veteran thrall-taker, knocks the third stranger, at this distance clearly an aged crone, to the ground.

The broadest of the three Viglundings who advance to skirmish with their southern enemies cries out "For the burning of Fystenheorth!" and is answered with a prideful cry as spears are cast and battle is joined.

:ooc: The Viglunding skirmish screen will get to throw their spears as an opening volley.  Esgalwen can loose another shot as well, should she so desire.

:ooc: Tom's run of luck with me rolling dice for and at him appears to be at an end, as Hathcyn loses five Endurance and needs a Protection roll (TN 14):

One spear strikes home, staggering Hathcyn briefly though the thick leather scales of his corselet hold fast.  The others are deflected by shields broad and stout.

Anger boils up in her chest with the cruelty displayed and Esgalwen aims at the man named Wulfdan and lets fly an arrow.

:ooc: Well, if we go by the idea that enemies use the :~~: (11) as a auto-success and :g: (12) as a zero, then he suffers a wound. If not, then he only suffers the 13 :<3: loss.

Esgalwen's eye is keen and her aim true, and her shaft pierces iron mail and flesh alike, transfixing Wulfdan's sword arm and very nearly pinning it to his chest like a great nail.  The treacherous former thegn lets loose a panicked cry as his knees give way and he drops into the tall grass.
