Hathcyn saw with horror the vile interference of fell magics. Everywhere he seemed to turn the strength of men was beset by the horrors if the dead who would not remain so. In the woods of mirkwood, on the planks of Laketown, here at the Tarn. A corner of his mind began to wonder if some dark master was behind all of this and that the company were thrown against this force by chance or fate. Was not the tower of the southern wood the abode of the Necromancer... These thoughts would have to wait till the battle was won, right now more pressing matters came to the fore. Grimbeorn was beset.

"A quick death to the beast will serve us best. To you beast of flesh, feel the bite of the Bannerman of the Carrock, the Longspear has come."

Ooc: gotta move to a forward stance, really need to dish out some damage to this creature. Now is the hour to triumph or perish.

Esgalwen breathed deeply and felt the stress and weariness bleed away, if only for a moment. Around her, the Woodmen and orcs still raged in battle and a troll towered before the doors of the hall. Hathcyn raced forward with a battle cry trying to pierce the giant monster, but it was apparent that he, too, was tired. The man had left himself open for attack. Raising Nimronyn once more over her head, she moved to protect her friend if only by giving the troll a second opponent.

:ooc: Well that is a 23 success for 11 :<3: loss.

I actually do not get the Shadow Bane bonus, as she is not in Forward stance.

Despite the brave words of his heorthgeneat, Grimbeorn sees Hathcyn's strength clearly waning just as Esgalwen summons more from the deep reserves possessed by those of the blood of Númenor.  As he feels the dreadful clutch of the corpse-song leave his jaw, he cries out "Snipe and snare all you will, foul spirit, it will not avail you if your champion lies cloven and dead!"

Above the heads of the fighters, Lindwine looses another arrow, though at what target none of the companions now know.  As Grimbeorn steps forward, shield at the ready, the voices of Men nearby rise in cheers and from somewhere an orc screams its last.

:ooc: Grimbeorn shifts down to Open stance and attacks.  Nothing fancy, just axing a troll to death...

Stung by Grimbeorn's continuing ferocity as much as the blows delivered, the troll recoils.  "SHADDAP, YOU 'ORRIBLE, 'AIRY LIT'LE FINGS!  YER ALL SO NOISY!!"

In ironic counterpoint, the eerie corpse-song rises to compete with the troll's voice and the ongoing din of the battle.

  Westernesse beneath the waves
Is drowned.  Its folk to watery graves
Were doomed by hubris of the kings
Of Men, and those few precious things
That carried hence were, to the shore
  Of southern lands, and Eriador
Now lie in molder, or forgot
Given o'er to age and rot...

As it insults and admonishes her ancestors and her homeland, the dead shieldmaiden's hand twitches and spasms until a finger points forth and a bloody arm rises to point blasphemously at Esgalwen.  She feels the grip of the song tighten around her limbs and staggers back, her balance slipping as her legs lock rigid.  The troll, seeing one foe retiring, redoubles its efforts to destroy Grimbeorn.

:ooc: Esgalwen sails right through, and the troll doesn't seem to be able to hit a white whale on a black background.
