From the shattered body of the shieldmaiden comes a weird, keening song:

Death to light, to law, to love!
Cursed be moon and stars above!
  May darkness everlasting old
That waits outside in surges cold
Drown Manwë, Varda and the sun!
May all in hatred be begun
and all in evil ended be,
in moaning of the endless Sea!

As the troll's heavy footfalls approach, the mist swirls and gathers about them.

:ooc: paul, what's going in here with the Shieldmaiden? i am missing something.

There was someone on the roof shooting and then there is a dead corpse in the yard that's animated and speaking?

From Lindwine's lips comes a cry of dismay as she beholds for the first time a stone troll.  A fearsome thing it is, drawn by its master's call from some dismal lair beneath the shadowy boughs of southern Mirkwood.  Easily half again as tall as a Man, and many times as massive, it bears a jerkin and crude vambraces of uncured and unidentifiable hides over its rough skin, from which several arrows already protrude.  A shiver of what was once a ram for to break the doors of Sweartmereseld it now grips in the mode of a club, and the blood of Men already stains its jaw and jowls.

From inside the hole in the roof, another arrow protrudes, insistently jabbing at the woman of the Tarn until she plucks it from the hand that proffers it.  Then (for what else could be done?) she nocks it and takes aim at the huge and hateful form.

:ooc: There's (quite intentionally) a lot going on in this scene.  Lindwine (https://rpg.avioc.org/boards/index.php?msg=33159) is shooting a bow from up on the roof and yes, a dead shieldmaiden of the Woodmen is... speaking?  Sort of?  There's a voice, and her eyes are aglow, but her mouth isn't moving.

The shieldmaiden's death was a blink-and-you'll-miss-it detail a few rounds ago (https://rpg.avioc.org/boards/index.php?msg=33136) - she was one of the people who followed you from the goblin ambush only to get cut down in the fighting.

If you're confused, then good.  This is supposed to feel confusing and frightening.

Oh, and Lindwine misses, her arrow going wide into the mist.

:ooc: She will spend a :vv: to make that a 17 :%: success.

That should restore 5 :<3: and move her out of her Weary status.

Hathcyn grew weary of being plagued with corpses, though weary he was in truth from the long battle. But a fey mood was on him and he knew the faster the fight was concluded one way or the other toil would cease.

"CARROCK!"

The longspear moved opening an attack against the troll

:ooc: I'll take a great success.

The longspear was an advantage to the Beorning. Much like fighting a mountain bear he hoped to inflict pain and stay out if its reach.

Grimbeorn cannot let the town down, the fight must be brought to this great enemy and they need all the help they can get.  "To the wall -- we will yet beat them back!  For the Tarn!" he cries, calling all in hearing to meet the troll in their way.  "Now for you, brute.  If you value your hide, leave lest you feel the bite of our blades and sting of arrow -- this is not your day!"

:ooc: I think we all need to start paying a bit more attention to the details.

Quote from: tomcat on Oct 18, 2021, 02:23 AMThat should restore 5 :<3: and move her out of her Weary status.
I'll allow it this time for dramatic reasons, but usually you can't shake off Weariness without a prolonged rest (see TOR p 132).

Quote from: Telcontar on Oct 18, 2021, 02:43 AM:ooc: I'll take a great success.
You will, in fact, take a failure (Hathcyn, being Weary, disregards all the '3's you rolled and only managed a 10.  You can add Advantage dice or Hope points, if you like - let me know.

Maneuver: Intimidate

Check the table in the opening post (or TOR p 179): Intimidate is for people in Forward stance.  Do you want to change your stance, or your action?  If you do go with Intimidate, you'll knock off more than half of the troll's Hate, so there's that to bear in mind.

:ooc: if rally comrades or second wind doesnt take you over the threshold of weariness than what's the point of sacrificing an attack to execute the action?

:ooc: not worth the advantage die. Its got a 50% chance if it was a protection test then maybe.

On comes the brutish thing with the deceptive speed of sudden floodwaters, brushing aside Hathcyn's harassing strikes.  It is stopped, momentarily, by the ferocity of Grimbeorn's challenge, and for a moment doubt fills its eyes.  Then, locking eyes with the Wolfslayer, it bellows in response "I'LL SQUASH YER BODY, EAT YER HEAD AN' CRAP OUT YER TEETH!"

As it advances, shivered club raised high in horny-skinned hand for to drive the Son of Beorn like a nail into the earth, Grimbeorn feels the corpse-song of whatever vile spirit has come to dwell within the still-warm body of the shieldmaiden seize him.  His limbs, neck, hands, even his mighty lungs all stiffen as a sorcerous grip takes them...

:ooc: Grimbeorn needs to pass a Corruption test (TN 14) to shake off the effect of some Dreadful Spells:

Though subtle are the arts of the Enemy, still the Shadow has no hold on the heart of this prince of Men.  At the cry of his follower and friend, he springs forth from the hold of dark magic, leaping aside as the troll's club hurls clods of earth skyward from where he stood!
