EDORAS
In the shadow of saw-toothed Mount Írensaga, on a broad hill behind a high wall stands Edoras, the court of the King. The wide rutted track weaves past lines of great grassy mounds on either side – the barrows of kings, thick with white flowers – up to the gates. Beyond a paved street rises curving up the hill on flagstones and many well-laid steps. Houses line the path and narrow alleys lead off it. A clear stream sparkles and chatters down a stone channel along the way. At the crown of the hill of Edoras gleams Meduseld, the Golden Hall. Here sits Thengel King, his beautiful Gondorian spouse by his side. In Meduseld gifts and honours are given, and here emissaries and visitors come to ask leave of the King to travel in his land.

Edoras is the chief city of Rohan, counting the greatest townsfolk in the entire Riddermark. Local chiefs and lords live in Edoras with their households, meeting tradesmen and craftsmen along its main street, while many farmers and herders regularly come to see the King and bring him the bounty of the farmlands. A great part of the folk living in farmsteads and manors in the proximity of the city may find refuge behind the dike, wall and fence of Edoras, should war come to Rohan. There are no thralls in the city; workers are paid for their labour, however toilsome. Tradesmen buy the work of the local smiths and woodwrights, and sell leather, cloths and ales from Westfold and Eastfold. Horse-merchants come here to see what the best horse-herds have to offer, and leave to bring the swift steeds of the Riddermark as far as Gondor. Since Edoras sees travellers coming from far provinces and even from outside the borders of Rohan it also boasts an inn, a long house where foreigners can gather for drinks and meals and where they can find a bed in need.

King Thengel, Lord of the Riddermark
Thengel has returned to his country only in the year 2953, already 48 years old. Before that time he had lived for thirty years in Gondor, away from the land of his forebears, to escape the influence of his ill-tempered and unwise father. Thengel returned a grown man, with a foreign Queen and a foreign heir. Thengel and his family speak Sindarin and Westron, in the Golden Hall, but in all public matters the Lord of Rohan and his household use the language of the Mark.

Queen Morwen of Rohan
Morwen is a lady of high blood, not easily deceived. The Rohirrim call her Steelsheen, a strong name for a forbidding queen. Much younger than her husband, Morwen lived most of her early life in distant Lossarnach, a fief to the south of Minas Tirith, but she is a descendant of the princes of Dol Amroth, Dúnedain with Elven-blood in their veins.
She is tall and fair-skinned with long black hair – quite exotic to her husband's fair-haired people – appearing as foreign as her native speech and accent, so soft and musical compared to the slow, rich language of Rohan. She treats every honest man and woman with fairness and generosity, yet she remains distant and reserved.

EARLY SPRING 2954 T.A.

This day is unlike any others in Edoras. Not only did the two marshals gathered in Meduseld to hold a council with the king and its advisors, but a most unlikely visit has been announced. Visitors from far far away had undertook the perilous journey through Rhovanion when they heard the announcement of the coronation of Thengel. After several months, they have now arrived in Edoras. Such a meeting didn't happen since decades, and the king summoned many notable figures from the kingdom.

The day went by, slowly, in expectation. Finally a horn blows from the outside. The guards open the golden gates wide, allowing a cold early spring breeze to flow inside the hall of Meduseld. On the threshold stand some two scores of sturdy figures. Ten of them remain motionless, you can recognize them as fighters from the heavy hauberks they wear. A single set of such armor is well worth a house, as a second layer of rings is made out of gold and silver. A dozen dwarves enter, all clad in flamboyant attires. Many of them are carrying small wooden caskets, carved with geometric features and encrusted with gems catching whatever few rays of light and reflecting them a thousand times.

At the head walks an unusual sighting of a dwarf. Although his beard (braided into a silver case) and his small stature cannot hide his origin, his bearing and regal clothes seem more fitting to a High Elf. As he makes his way to the throne, many mutter as folk catch sight of the many gold embroideries he wears. Even the sword he is carrying at his side seems to be more of a piece of art than an actual weapon.

The dwarf envoy stops in front of the throne and bows. « I salute you, great king. I'm Dori, son of Fror, at your service. The King under the mountain, Dáin I, sends his greetings and as a token of friendship, offers you these... » and as he gestures, the boxes carrying dwarves open their burden, revealing gold and gems in abundance. « We believe the green shades of these jewels would remind you of the plains of your kingdom »

Such an introduction cannot go unappreciated, and as can be expected Thengel welcomed the dwarves warmly, and assured the envoy that there should be ongoing friendship between the Riddermark and the newly reborn kingdom of Erebor.

As is custom in Rohan, a big feast will soon be held. In the meantime, the guests of the king mingle with the dwarves. Most do so out of courtesy, some others by curiosity, but a few also have business at heart. Rumors of the famous craftsmanship of the dwarves reached as far as Rohan, not mentioning the tremendous riches they gain from the fall of Smaug.

:ooc: Egilhir : You are present at this meeting, as a member of the retinue of the King. You feel your presence is ill perceived by the Rohirrim guards, but the king has nonetheless asked you to remain for a while.

:ooc: Nameless character of WaitingCynicism : you are present as well, you rode from Helm's Deep with Marshal Eogar to attend to the meeting.

:ooc: Veig : you came all the way from Erebor to Edoras. You travelled by boat whenever it's been possible, making the journey quite bearable. Nonetheless you are very tired and look forward some rest. But not now unfortunately. Your loremaster in Erebor required from you document as much knowledge as possible about Rohan and the Rohirrim. And also to recover as much knowledge as you can from the long abandoned dwarves holdings in the white mountains.

He expected that the Rohirim wouldn't appreciate his presence, as a foriegner to these lands he understood that many would see royal business as none of his, but he had been tasked with accompany Thengel to his homeland, along with his wife a distant cousin on his fathers side. There where other reasons for him being here too, he was part emissary from Gondor, part watcher for signs of the enemy trying to take advantage of a new King and the political turmoil it could cause. He had his own reasons, he had heard much of the horses of Rohan and wished to see such steeds for himself, also there was a sense of adventure, not for the idle seeing of sights, although it was nice to see other lands, but to learn of the enemy from the mouths of others and put his spear and sword to use to aid them.

He was interested in the dealings of the Rohirim, but as the emissaries of the dwarves arrived his curiosity was roused. He had seen very little of Durins folk, although he had heard the tales that Erebor had been reclaimed, from a dragon no less. He admired the craftsmanship of Dori's clothing, his weapons and armour. And was even more amazed to see the amount of treasure laid before the King. Clearly the tales of the wealth of Erebor was true.

Once formality was out of the way he would make attempts to speak with the dwarves. He wanted to hear more of Erebor and the North, and he wondered if any in the company had traveled into Eriador and seen the remnants of Gondors sister Kingdom of Arnor.

It's not hard to speak with a dwarf, it's harder to be left undisturbed. Many Rohirrim are eager to strike trade deals with the envoys of Erebor. One of the dwarves however, catches your attention. Although his attire does not differ much from the other dwarves, you guess he's more of a scholar, ink has left soft stains on his fingertips, and he carries a satchel holding scrolls and writing material. From time to time he's called upon to outline some contract draft but overall he's left pretty much alone.

He takes note of the ink stains and scrolls. "A scholar, who better to speak to for information." He says to himself as he walks across the halls to approach the dwarf.

"Well met! I'm Egilhir of Gondor, I rode with the King on his return home and I am residing within Edoras for a while. May I have your name?" He asks extending a hand to the dwarf.

:ooc: I totally forgot to mention Roderick, my bad !
Roderick the Red is standing in the hall as well, although he could well be outside, depending if he agrees to surrender his weapon to the guards to enter Meduseld. As a matter of fact, very few people are allowed to bear weapons inside the Golden Hall. At the moment, only the two Marshals, the personal bodyguards of the King (including his Gondorian friend) and the envoy of the King Under The Mountain are allowed to keep their weapon.
Roderick acts as bodyguard to a powerful Rohir merchant going by the name of Goldred. There's obviously no need for a bodyguard right now, you can only guess that the trader is trying to make himself look important. He's hired three more muscle men for the same purpose. You don't really mind, it's well paid and winter has been quiet.

The dwarf frowns and looks up from his scroll. He stares at you from head to toe. "Not a Rohir, are you ? Gondor from the look of you. Heard they have a decent library down there. Name's Gibor, lad. Herald, lorekeeper and at the moment petty contract scribbler. So much for knowledge gathering". He laughs out loudly. "At least the beer is fresh." He gulps down his pint and shakes firmly your extended hand.

He smiles warmly at the dwarf. "Indeed, from Dol Amroth by birth but have spent many years in Minas Tirith much like the new King." He replies. He takes a sip of his own beer nods in agreement with the dwarf. "They do brew a fine beer here, it's actually the first I've tasted it." He looks at the ink that smudged his own hand and laughs a little to himself. "Is there much news to be told from the north?" He then asks politely while scanning the room for a moment taking not of the door guards and their dealings.

« Aye, aye. Many songs I've heard about that place. Not fond of boats myself though. » he leans a bit closer. « Do they make good meat pies out of those fancy white birdies ? Do you know the Dalish now trend to cook poultry in cinder ? The « Smaug » they call it. » He chuckles. « humans should be more respectful. Guess it is their way to deal with bad memories. That's tasty food though, with a bit of gravy. The north is changing lad, and I don't mean the culinarily trends. There's two great kingdoms now, one above one below, both working hand in hand. Not since the last age did the dwarves and the men worked so well together. You should see the new Dale, it's going to be a wonder. Streets are paved with colourful stones, the palace of the king is made out of black marble, and everyday one can witness men, dwarves and pointed ears... err, I mean elves... striking deals together in the market square. Can you imagine that ? Not so long ago, heads would have been the only things stricken ! Friendship in battles can do that. Forges bounds peace can never hope to achieve. Sad thing... But at least, blood wasn't wasted for nothing.
The Dalish are slowly reclaiming the fertile eastern lands, and more and more men are flocking to the banner of Bard the Bowman. And us people of Durin, we have what we always have been looking for. A home. A mighty kingdom. Some dream now of reclaiming Khazad-dûm. Foolish I say ! Some things are better left forgotten in the dark. As for Mirkwood. There's something evil there, down to the roots. And I don't mean spiders or trolls. We're trying to clear off the old road through that cursed place, but to no avail. Even the trees are trying to kill you. Ever heard of gallow vines ? They sneak around your neck while you sleep and before you know it you're six feet off the ground choking till your last breath. Cursed place. So we came down by boat. Not fond of boat, did I already tell you ? And now I'm here. Not fond of horses either. Us dwarves don't like things bigger than us. Guess that's why we don't like many things. » He laughs and pats your shoulder. « Now tell me about yourself, boy. How is it where you're from ? »

He smiles to hear of the friendship and prosperity of the north, of Bards growing power, and that of the Dwarves. The mention of elves makes him smile more but he takes not of the dwarves change in tone. The shadow he describes in the Mirkwood however unsettles him somewhat. He had heard stories of the cursed woodland. His mood lightens again and he laughs at the dwarves comment about disliking things bigger than him. "Well we don't eat swans where I'm from to answer that question first." He says with a playfulness in his tone. It doesn't last long though. "Gondor, is never a safe land. It's eastern borders are held by servants of the enemy it's lands including my fair city of Dol Amroth see raids from the men of the south. Prior to coming here with Thengel I fought along the borders against ever bolder actions of Orc and Evil Men alike." He leans on his spear being one of the few non Rohir in the palace allowed to carry a weapon. "The call if Foe Needle in the common tongue. It has been passed through my family says the fall of Numenor." His voice is strong as he speaks of his family heirloom and trusted weapon, but the hint of sadness in his voice is hard to miss.

« Oh I see. Much like the ravens we have in Erebor, are they ? Speaking to some of your folk as well ? Heard there's some intelligent kingfishers in the Anduin vales. There's also the Great Eagles. The bears of Beorn. Soon we shall eat nothing but cabbage ! Do you think pointed ears talk to cabbage ? » He laughs again. « Ah, elves, you got my meaning. Quite a weapon you have there, and I know what I mean. It's seen blood before, that I can tell for sure, and from that keen edge of its I can forebode it shall see more before the rust of old age takes the best of it. Keep it sharp, lad, nowadays it's better company than most breathing allies. Oh but look ! Dinner's about to be served ! »

He laughs at the dwarves good humour. "I'm sure there are still some good allies to be had." He says with a smile then turns his attention to the mention of food. "I was begining to get hungry. Lets feast together Gibor, have you been West beyond the Misty Mountains?" He asks as he heads for the great tables along with the dwarf.

Roderic gazed around, taking in the atmosphere of the great golden hall. All around him the walls were covered in tapestries depicting the history and legends of the Rohirrm. Whilst he was surrounded by the buzz of conversation in several different languages, he was aware of his new employer Goldred trying to catch the eye and attention of several important people in the vicinity.

He had been hired by Goldred only a few days before. Adrahil, the caravan master from Minas Tirith, had hoped that Roderic would accompany him back to Gondor, but Roderic found himself wanting to stay awhile in Rohan - he liked the lush tall windswept grasslands. Now that the last days of winter had receded, the days were longer and much warmer in these southern climes than at home in Beorn, and he thought he would seek further employment in Rohan.

Adrahil had introduced Roderic to his friend Goldred, and given Goldred a glowing reference. Goldred had been keen to employ the young man from Beorn although so far he had proved evasive about what Roderic's duties would be. For now Roderic was content to accompany the wealthy merchant around Edoras as he conducted his business at the markets and taverns in the city.

As evening closes by, the feast begins. Soon tables are put together in the hall of Meduseld. Well-seasoned poultries in wine sauces, roasted and stuffed piglet served with creamy jelly, lamb with garlic, crispy wild pig tails, charred cabbage, and a wide variety of fishes smoked and fresh are laid between the guests. A cask of beer is opened up, and Dowinion wine is served.
Twice you can hear a dwarf laugh out for some reason and shouting « Cabbage ! Cabbage ! Can you hear me ?! » Overall, good humor reigns, all the guests are enjoying themselves.

:ooc: Most of you are unfamiliar with Rohan customs, but even though it's plain to see that the king and his queen seem to be from a different breed entirely. While most Rohirrim, including the two marshals of the realm, speak and laugh loudly, noisily enjoying themselves, Thengel and Morwen display composed manners more akin to the elves.

Eghilir and Gibor sit side by side at the table. Like most dwarves he's fond of good food and strong beverages, and he's no less good tempered. As conversation goes by, he introduces you to some other members of the dwarf delegation. Among them is Tyrok, of whom he seems to be particularly fond, he speaks of him almost like a father would speak of his son. Tyrôk seems, no, agitated is the wrong word, but torn, as if he would both prefer to hide behind Gibor and peer more closely at these strangers. A fair haired youngster, in simple, practical and hard wearing clothing, he has something in his hand that he fidgits with momentarily before stuffing it into a belt pouch.

He steps forward slightly, and bows. His voice has an accident that tells of the travels that all Erebor dwarves were prey to, and he carefully introduces himself in Westron "As my master has said, I Tyrôk of the Lonely Mountain am. It is my pleasure that he has taken me as apprentice. I am honoured to meet you in this intriguing place. I may need Adûnaic to, no, no, I may need to master Adûnaic, but in this land I can hear Sindarin and Rohirric, where one hears echoes of the tongue Men use in my home. I am sorry. I speak too much. Again, I am honoured to meet you, and am at your service"

He bows again

Roderic follows Goldred around the great hall as he greets friends, acquaintances and fellow merchants and traders. 'Go on and find yourself something to eat and drink' said Goldred,, 'there is no danger here, and I have business to discuss'.

Roderic begins to thread his way through the crowded hall, he towers over the more slightly built Rohirrm. After months travelling with the merchants, the shyness of the boy from the farm has fallen away to reveal a far more confident young man. He nods his head and smiles in acknowledgement to people who catch his eye, as he works his way to the tables groaning under the weight of a vast quantity of food. Roderic notices there is a company of dwarves amongst the gathering, an unusual sight even in Carrock he thought, even rarer in Edoras?

Rare indeed. Although they seldom cross the protectorate of Beorn on their way to their newfound home in Erebor. Most of the dwarves you met so far were about to start a new life in a new place, speaking eagerly of the place they come from and what they intend to do once they arrive in the kingdom under the mountain.
Those ones here however mean business and you have a hard time holding their attention once they realize you're a sellsword. A Rohir rider, however, seems to notice you and greets you. « Well met, friend, I couldn't help but overhearing you. Do I assume correctly you're a sword for hiring ? You're an impressive sight. Us in Eastfolde are always looking for new recruits. Would you consider joining us for a while ? Soon many of our men will soon return to their home and attend to their families and fields, and we might be in need of capable men shortly. »

He must look unusual, in his fine clothes with his dark hair and deep green eyes, not the fair hair of the Rohirim, sitting with some of the dwarves. He smiles and holds his hand out towards Tyrok to shake his hand. "Pleasure to meet you, I'm Egilhir of Gondor, and part of King Thengels company as he returned home." He smiles as the young dwarf lists the languages he recognises amongst the tongues spoken here. "In Dol Amroth Sindarin is still regularly spoken along with Westron, the language of the Rohirim differs but I imagine it is similar to some of the tongues spoken by men in the north."

He spokes the young man moving through the feast hall, clearly another outsider. He stands at the table and waves to the young man (Roderic) "Well met, you look lost amongst the my friend, why don't you take a seat here and enjoy a flagon of beer and some of the good food?" He looks down at the dwarves. "Maybe as outsiders we should stick together in unfamiliar lands." He says to them hoping they don't mind the additional company. By the time he had looked back up he noticed the other outsider had been stopped by one of the Rohir. "Seems he's been caught up by another!" He laughs and sits himself back down and pours himself a glass of wine.

The rider of the eastmark mutters at Roderic. "This one there is from Gondor. They have long been allies of ours but it doesn't mean we wish to have one of their own as king. We will never know why Fengel King decided to send his heir in the south but one thing's for sure, it was a wrong move. Don't get me wrong, Thengel may be a great sovereign, but what we need now is a Rohir to unite us." He pats Roderic's shoulder. "We will discuss later. Think about my offer, my lord Cenric pays good silver."

Roderic is amused as he shakes the proferred hand of the young Rohir. Sellsword he thought? Perhaps he was, only a few short months ago farm boy would have been a better description. How times change. He had certainly practiced every day with sword and spear, but wasn't sure that he was experienced enough yet with either to describe himself as a sword for hire! 'Hail fellow, well met, my name is Roderic, what is yours'? 'And what brings you to this great hall and this august gathering'?

'A pleasure to meet you Cuthred, this is truly a momentous gathering' says Roderic. 'Master Goldred is my new employer at the moment, although I have only just begun to serve him and he has not yet indicated what my duties will be, beyond accompanying him to business meetings around Edoras'. 'Is your lord Cenric acquainted with Goldred'? 'If my skills are more useful to your lord, then perhaps Cenric could discuss the matter with master Goldred, is lord Cenric in attendance today'?

« For sure he is ! He's the third Marshal ! But maybe you're not familiar with our ways. See, the King is the ruler of all the Riddermark but he can't keep watch over the whole domain alone. Two lords are chosen among his aldermen to become the second and third marshal. As such they're in command of the eorlingas (such is the name we give to our companies of riders) of the west and the east. There's no first Marshal in time of peace. Should war arises, the king himself endorses the coat of First Marshal and becomes our supreme military commander. This didn't happen since King Helm the First reclaimed the land from Dunlending usurpers two centuries ago.
We all know Goldred in the east, he often meets with merchants and traders from Gondor in Aldburg, the capital of the Eastmark. He's very wealthy, so we can't hope to buy your contract. However he owes my lord a couple of favors and should you agree to serve us, it should be no problem to arrange that. »

He stays in light conversation with the dwarves, keeping his attention on the other young outsider who has been held in conversation with the Rohir. He had taken note of the rohirs gesture when he first tried to grab the young mans attention. He would also turn his attention to the King and his queens actions during the feast. He took note of how elequent their behaviour was in comparison to the rowder behaviour of the men of Rohan. "That'll be the ettiquette taught in Gondor." He says to himself as he takes another sip from his cup, enjoying the food and drink but not wishing to over do it.

The King and the queen seem to get along surprisingly well with the Erebor envoy. As you ponder it, you realize that the dwarf is probably also considered a stranger by his own kind given his unusual tastes and manners. At present, the queen and he are lengthly describing the wine with flourish and somewhat cryptical adjectives, twirling the liquid in the glasses and holding them in the light of the torches to have a better sight of its redness.

The King speaks casually with the man seated at his right, one you recognize as Eogar, Marshal of the West. While the Marshal of the East is considered a rich man, Eogar wields much more influence. He's also more true to the ideals of the Rohirrim riders. Cenric, his eastern counterpart had all but bought his title. His nephew should have become Marshal after the death of his father but Cenric offered so many gold to Fengel King that the greedy sovereign was more than willing to overrule the righteous heir.

Your attention is also drawn to Sunnifa, the beautiful blonde serving-woman. She's been in Meduseld since the days of Fengel King but quickly gained the favors of Morwen when the crowned couple returned from Gondor. Despite her beauty, she's still unmarried, and sometimes you feel some attraction toward her.

:ooc: As a sidenote, Morwen comes from Belfalas before moving to Lossarnach.

If he catches the attention of Sunnifa he gives her a warm smile. Curious as to why a woman of her age however was unwed, he decides asking her probably isn't the best way to approach the curiosity. He excuses himself from the dwarves for a moment and tries to mingle with some of the Rohir, maybe asking a few men who he knew heralded from Edoras about her. While he mingles he slowly makes his way towards the Kings table.

"Protecting our borders is the business of all in Rohan. The West may have to deal with the dunderlings, but the East is no walk in the fields. Strange creatures roam out of the brown lands to enter our realm, not to mention the rampaging orcs going down from Mirkwood. Never before have they been so eager for looting, as if they were searching for something. Us Eorlings are too few to man the watchtowers and protect the farmsteads. So here's the offer ; hard bread, poor shelters, dangerous watchs,... but solid silver at the end of every season, and the glory of serving Westfold. And who knows, maybe some day you could be granted a place of your own."

Roderic laughs out loud. 'How could a young man with an adventurous spirit refuse such a generous offer Cuthred'. 'Give up a life of good food and drink, whilst visiting markets, taverns and farms with my master Goldred, for a life in the open, with nothing but stale bread and water to drink'. 'Let me think on it'. 'In the meantime I intend on finding some good food and drink here in this great hall, particularly is it could be my last for a while'. 'Seek me out later Cuthred, I must find my master Goldred and discuss your proposal with him'. Roderic beams at the young Rohr warrior, and grasps his wrist as he takes his leave, and makes his way towards the tables of food.

You recognize Gycsa in the crowd, an Eorling rider from Harrowdale. He's been part of the honour guard escorting Thengel King on his way from Gondor to Edoras. Despite nearing 50 he painfully taught you one trick or two when it came to sword sparring, and although he cannot be called a friend, you trust and value each other enough to speak freely.
" Man eater if you ask me. Since she's been around, she tried to seduce too many men to be honest, beginning with Fengel King himself. She's been clever enough to keep off his bed back in the days. He turns to his master Gibor

Trade with our kinfolk in the west is by means of the Misty Mountain passes. With Gondor and Dorwinion, our feet will never carry us here. The Lord of this Hall seems interested in the outside world, but few of his court see beyond their bounds, and I am at a loss to fathom the advantage to us here"

« Where are your manners boy ? When one becomes king, it's custom to make it known to all his kindred. We're also here for the trade, allies, and fame... Aye and free food and drinks too. Southern hop gives a different taste to the ale, ever noticed that ? Remember that reclaiming Erebor was good. But that's not all there is. We intend not to remain with our asses sitting on piles of coins, do we ? Nah, we soon shall reclaim the home of our forefathers. Yes lad, soon we will march on Khazad-dûm. And once it will be done, Rohan will be as good as our neighbors. »

He pauses and swallows some ale. He takes a small bone and uses it as a toothpick for some moments. Then more thoughtfully. « You read about the kingdoms of ages past, uh ? Everywhere else, it's but rubbles and tales for the bards to earn their silver. But here, those are still alive. Gondor is the last great kingdom of the Dúnedain, and Rohan is the last great kingdom of Rhovanion. We stand in the middle of what was and what could be again. It is a great opportunity to be here. Chatters fade as you finally draw your audience's attention. All eyes and ears turn toward you. Soon, Rohirrim and dwarves alike are captured by your tale. Breaths are held when time is running short for the army of Eorl to ride to the rescue of Gondor, joy and relief are displayed when he finally makes it and both armies unite to throw the invader back to the east, pride swells the chests when Cirion offers the plains of Calenardhon to Eorl, what would later be known as the Riddermark, the kingdom of Rohan.

Fists are knocked on the tables in content when you come to the end of the tale. Cheers erupt " Hail ! Hail ! To Rohan ! To Thengel King ! ". Cups are raised in your honor, even the king nods at you in approval. You will later learn from the queen that your timing was fit, for the tale greatly pleased the dwarves.

The King turns to his Second Marshal. « What news from Isengard, Éogar ?

- Nothing my Lord. » replied Éogar with a sad face. « We did not hear from the white wizard since he sent gifts for your coronation last year. We know he doesn't welcome strangers anymore, guards have been placed at the doors that have never been shut in centuries. What he wants to keep out of sight we can only guess.

The feast is half way done when the doors open and a guard comes in. He walks to the king and whispers to his ear. Thengel seems to consider for a moment, then nods to the guard. As the soldier makes his way back to the door, the king speaks a few words in Sindarin to his queen.

Conversations die out, silence slowly returns in the hall as expectation takes over amusement. It's unlikely that a king would interrupt a feast for an honored guest unless some important matter is at hand.

When the door reopens after some tensed moments, a young lady, not far from childhood, enters the hall. She looks like she has been traveling for a long long while, her worn up clothes have been patched up so often you can barely distinguish the original layout. Yet she stands tall and walks to the king without faltering, not even looking at the marvelous dishes spread on the tables, secretly hoping her grumbling stomach won't betray her hunger. Four men walk with her, two in rugged clothes the like of hers, while the other two display a more familiar Rohirrim attire.

The young woman bows and speaks. « Thengel King, I salute you. I'm Edelyn, and I speak for my people. We arrived shortly upon your lands, and we ask you permission to settle down here as your loyal subjects. »

For some seconds, everybody inside the hall hold their tongue out of surprise. Then, whispers erupt from all over the room. The two marshals both try to capture the attention of the king, their voice rising the more and more since Thengel seems to pay no heed to them. Then the king asks for the silence in a clear voice.

And silence he gets immediately. Gently but firmly, he asks « where do you come from, young girl ? Why do you wish to settle upon my land ? Have you no place to call home ?
- We did, sir. But the orcs pushed us farther and farther south, until we came into strange and foreign lands, with customs alien to us. The folk wouldn't have us for long. So we decided to come here. »
Morwen then speaks. « Why here child ?
- I'm not a child anymore, my lady, I'm the daughter of the chieftain. I've already spilled orc blood, and that was three winters ago. »
A guard moves his hand toward the pommel of his weapon to clean up the offense made to the queen, but Morwen holds him still with a kind gesture of her delicate hand. Once more she strikes you as a woman of high bearing. Steelsheen you've heard her called, in regard to her grace and beauty, and you now understand why.

Edelyn continues. « We come from the vales up north. Two days march from our village stood the ruins of a great city, with many horse depictions. Great riders were these inhabitants, did say the occasional traveling bards. Had moved far to the south many years ago. Leaving some of their own in the very valley we lived in until recently... »
The king raises an eyebrow. « Speak your mind, what do you mean ?
- We believe our ancestors were those very people your forefathers left behind. We believe we have once been of the same folk. We believe we are Rohirrim by blood and that our home lies here. » concludes Edelyn with eyes brimful of tears.

Éorgas, Marshal of Westfolde, whose holding is nothing less than Helm's deep, stands up in anger. « Outrageous ! My lord, this is plain Dunlending trick, trying to worm their way inside your realm and gnaw at it from within. And when that vile scheme of theirs shall bear its poisonous fruits, they will uprise and strike when and where we expect it the less ! »
Morwen answers in an equal tone.« Yet should she speaks the truth we cannot turn down our own people and let them die out there in the wild. »

As Roderic and Goldred sit and talk about terms for Roderick's proposed change of employment, they become aware that conversation is ceasing around them, and attention is drawn to a young man standing by the high table who begins to recite a tale. Goldred whispers to Roderic 'This could be interesting, I think that is Egilhir of Gondor, I wonder what he thinks he is up to'? Roderic notices lots of raised eyebrows and bemused looks as the young man begins his tale. Scowls soon turn to approval and then to roars of enthusiasm. Goldred explains the tale to Roderic as he is not familiar with it. 'A well chosen tale' says Goldred. 'Perfect for this feast'. Roderic and Goldred resume their conversation, but again the hall falls into silence as a young girl approaches the high table with a tale that seems to enrage one of the Rohir Marshals.

If his Insight roll bears fruit and my Courtesy roll needs help, I will post again for an advantage dice.

:ooc: And that gives Gárulf a 16 success on Courtesy!  :csu:

As they entered the hall, Gárulf handed over his sword. He looked to the doorwarden, "That sword is Heordrēorig - it has a long history in my family. Please keep it safe."

They moved into the main hall and the Eorling began to feel sweat bead on his brow. He felt that he was walking into a cage. From the back of the hall, Gárulf watched as Edelyn was called forward and all listened to her tale. It did not surprise him the reaction of the marshalls - ever were they distrusting and ever controlling. This new king would have a hard time corralling their wills to his own.

The king and queen were bending all their attention on Edelyn and so Gárulf slowly stepped back into the crowd of others, hoping that no attention would fall on him. Still he was courteous to those around him and smiled and nodded in deference.

I just want to get out of here, was the thought that kept ringing in his brain. Please do not speak, Bree-man! Please!

Quote from: stevelampon on Jan 26, 2019, 11:21 AMRoderic and Goldred resume their conversation, but again the hall falls into silence as a young girl approaches the high table with a tale that seems to enrage one of the Rohir Marshals.

Although Roderic seems unconcerned by the story of the young dishevelled woman, Goldred doesn't loose a bit of it. He's always been a man of opportunity, and this for sure was a good mean for him to pull back some attention to him. He longed to be once again a man of influence, just as he was back in the days of Fengel. The new king was a different bred, it would require more than silver and golden tongue to get at him.

Goldred stands up and bows. "My Lord, if I may. If what that young woman say is true, surely she must have journeyed through the protectorate of Beorn. It happens to be that my recent associate here is a Beorning. He may bring some more light on this matter." He sits down and whispers at Roderic. "Now is the time to show you're worth your silver."

Thengel speaks to Roderic. "Come forward and speak."

:ooc: Preliminary insight/lore rolls can provide you with extra bonus dices to be use afterwards. It reflects your general feeling or knowledge of the situation, hence possibly giving you an edge for the following social roll. Once this is done, you proceed with the awe/inspire/riddle/... roll to see how the social encounter in itself goes. And you can add your bonus dices on that roll.
It means that you can get a clear view of what's going on, who's wanting what, what could be at stake,... but still miss your social roll because you're just too nervous or don't quite know how to express your ideas. And vice versa.

If you answer by clicking "reply" instead of using the quick reply box below the post, you will see the icons for ooc, sauron/gandalf, and so on.

Raghnall was well aware of his friends situation and so he too attempted to remain as scenerey for the unfolding encounter between the girl and the king.

He had never been in such a hall before or in a space with so many people in it at one time and so the Breelander tried to see as much as he could. He drank in the details of the hall, the food, and the people.

:ooc: That's a :g: ! Beorn isn't the usual type of leader, he offers his protection but doesn't ask for obedience, everyone is free to accept his "rule" or stay independent.
Roderic has indeed heard about refugees some two years ago. They didn't stay for more than one harvest though. Rumor has it that they left out of superstition after they learnt they were in fact under the protection of a skin changer and tribes of bear speakers.
Roderic doesn't know exactly where they came from. However, considering they descended from the north, options are few ; hillmen from Gundabad (not good, most used to follow willingly the witch king), northmen from the vales of Gundabad (slightly better), or from the upper vales of the Anduin (mostly independent clans, and occasional slavers led by a powermonger named Viglund).

Tyrôk, having observed all in the hall, asks of his Master "Master Gibor. I have heard a few stories that contain the veriest remnants that might speak of Eorl the Young leaving the lands not far from ours to the Fields of Celebrant. You no doubt know more, but I wonder if, on a more practical level, either yourself or Master Dori might have heard of the people that Mistress Edelyn has said she is from?"

He sits back on the stool, knowing that he is being both hopeful and presumptuous, but if you never ask, you will never learn

"Few more unfortunately. The city in ruins she referred to might be Framsburg, once capital city of the Éothéod as they were then called. We know that while they dwelt in the north, they were great horse tamers - and that they remain still - and of course we all know the tale of King Fram the dragonslayer. Hey, are those mashed parsnips ? Hand over ! What happened to the people they left behind we can only guess though. One thing's for sure, it will difficult for them to prove anything. The Éothéod relied on bards and tale tellers to preserve history, and I doubt these people there did otherwise."

What she says is true, not all of Eorls people came south with him many settled in the vales of the Anduin to the north. She's kin to you, the same that my people had kin of their own to the north seperated by different paths but connected by a common root." He says giving the woman a smile before turning his attention back to the king. "Maybe there's something to be done or to be investigated on this matter. If you need me in any capacity I'd be happy to do so Thengel King." He then says bowing his head to the king. Gárulf listened to the debate back and forth of these mighty lords in their golden hall, but always did the vision of Edelyn's starving people come to mind.

He thought of Marda and how she died upon the fields of Rohan - her home - where these mighty lords were to offer protection. It got the better of him and he spoke.

"T'would seem our new queen has the right of it that these folk should be shown our hospitality, if naught else. They have traveled far and are hungry...surely we can determine if they are Dunlanding spies after they eat and are made warm?"

Faces turned to look at Gárulf, after his gruff words, and the man felt suddenly alone.

I have come with these folk to Edoras in accordance with your law and I though am not numbered among them and seek no permenant home here I ask for your leave to see your realm and learn of its people. "Forgive me, Lord, but as you say - I am a man of the field and so am unaccustomed to the ways of gilded halls and kings." There was an edge on Gárulf voice that was dangerous for him, but he continued, "I only know the cold and struggle of field and stream, as we hunt ranging bands of orc in the east emnet. Thus do I sympathize with the lady's plight - no matter who or what she be."

The faces of the court changed to shock at how the Rohir addressed the king's door ward. He smiled apologetically, "Forgive my manners, but I am Gárulf."

Thankfully, Raghnall interrupted with his own request.

:ooc: I have to bring in Gárulf's jadedness and his reckless nature. He is not one for court and custom and he kind of is appalled at the splendor, and that this man on a hill can dictate the lives of others. Maybe it is because all he has known of kings is Fengel, and so thinks them all the same.

That said, he is no fool and knows that he is in a dangerous place.

He nods his head to the kings guard. "I apologise if I over stepped my mark or that you've misconstrued my intention."

His attention is taken by the man of Bree. He'd heard the name in the history books but had never heard much or met anyone from there, only knowing it sat in what once was the lands of Arnor.

He then looks back at the Rohir who had spoke. Garulf, a man of the people it seems from the tone that had been taken. He then looks to the king for his reaction and his input.

Thengel finally speaks. « I, Thengel, have made my decision. I will not let people starve upon my land, no matter where they hail from. The plains of Rohan are bountiful and there's plenty of space for good willed settlers. Young woman I grant you leave to remain in the Wold with your people. You are hereby allowed to hunt and plant and pasture your herds. »

The smile of relief upon Edelyn's face is short live though. « Yet since you have not made your bloodline claim proven beyond doubt, and considering Dundelings have long been assailing our realm by any mean, I shall decide by the end of spring whether you're allowed to remain for unlimited time or not. Cenric, Éogar, you will both send me men to accompany Edelyn back to her people, they will take will them two carts of provisions. I expect they report back to me in three months. Egihlir, you will go with them and be my ears and eyes. Also make sure they have a bedding and food for tonight. »

The King then turns to the Bree lander. « Raghnall, these are unusual circumstances. I understand you made the journey with these people and I assume you will return with them. I'd like very much to hear about Bree and Eriador, however, and I wish you will come back to Edoras and tell us more about the north. In the meantime I give you leave to travel freely in Rohan. »

And finally to the Rohir outlaw whose identity he perhaps chose to ignore on purpose. « Gárulf, your apologizes are accepted for you spoke out of concern for these people. Risking the ire of your sovereign for the safekeeping of foreigners is a noble endeavor. I hope such attitude will spread to make Rohan once more a welcoming realm. Let it not be forgotten that we've all have been foreigners here. »

Most people get the point of the King and look down. « Now let us resume. I think I heard there would be a tale about the reclaiming of Erebor. »

:ooc: In Edoras, there are few places for travellers. Guests of the King have their own house, but it will probably be used by the dwarves. The only option is Cépia's house, the inn of the city. Some denizens may also rent a spot in their house or stables.

He bows his head as the King makes his request of him. "As you wish Thengel King." He looks to the girl and fetches his spear which was resting against the table and heads towards her.

"I'm Egilhir of Gondor." He says warmly to her. "I'll see how many rooms I can arrange in the Inn for the weakest of your people and will try and get some food from the halls here to share amongst them. It seems I'm to stay with you and your people while you reside in Rohan. I'm keen to learn about your homeland. Perhaps you can indulge me as we set about tending to your kin?"

He'll lead Edelyn out of the halls to take her to arrange for food and bedding for the night, as much as he can aquire either through word or coin.

Roderic looks at Goldred with a certain degree of bewilderment. 'A most strange turn of events, don't you think master?' he says to Goldred. Goldred slaps him on the back and laughs. 'Very strange indeed, I am sure this Great Hall has never seen the like before. I am not sure I have ever seen a King addressed as such. Perhaps it is time for you to seek out Cuthred and see if this might be what my Lord Cenric has in mind for you? Remember Roderic, information and knowledge is power, and I expect you to keep me informed at all times, if you should indeed travel with Egilhir and Edelyn'.

Hearing that Edelyn and her people were secure and that Raghnall had permission of the king to roam Rohan, Gárulf turned to the Bree-man and spoke softly.

"I think it is time we take our leave here. We have come to do what we promised. The woman and her clan are safe, now let us go assuage your desires to see these wonderful lands of my home." There was an edge of sarcasm to the Rohir's words.

Gárulf pressed himself forward into the throng, so that he might gain the attention once more of the King's steward. When the man finally addressed him, the rogue asked, "Lord, my companion and I have done our business here, bringing the woman Edelyn. We request leave from our king, so that we might return to the fields."

He mumbled to his friend, "i may have a coin or two to get us a drink..."
Title: Re: Edoras - Heart of the Riddermark

Edelyn is a little disconcerted by the decision of the king and it takes her a few seconds to realize she's being dismissed with only half a solution to the problem of her folk. She sighs, fights back her tears and bows. « I thank you, my Lord, we won't disappoint your trust. » Then she follows Egilhir, her two henchmen at her side. She stops by Gárulf and Raghnall « You brought us safely here, you have my thanks. We owe a debt to you. You will always be welcome by my people »

Egilhir knows that the inn always keeps rooms for unexpected guests, available only by word of the King or some other authority, so he takes Edelyn and her two henchmen to Cépia's house, chatting along the way. As for the food he knows arrangements will be made and by morning the two carts will be ready to leave, packed with salted meat, dried fruits, and enough flour to bake breads for two months. Enough, he hopes, for a fresh start.

Back in the Golden Hall, conversations and feasting have resumed. The two Marshalls quickly gave their instructions, both seem pretty unhappy with the situation but none shared their feelings with the king. Thengel would probably have given them few care anyway. Morween was most pleased and gifted her husband with many smiles and tender gestures. Dori the envoy from Erebor visibly approved as well.

Cuthred walks again to Roderic and pats him on the shoulder. « Here comes your first assignment ! You will go with Kendrick accompany these refugees back to the Wold, stay with them and learn what you can learn. You're not Rohir, they may be more eager to reveal their true selves to you... Consider yourself lucky, it will probably prove more exciting than standing guard in a watchtower. »

As Gárulf asks Heáfod about leaving, the old soldier sadly shakes his head. « Ah, I fear there is something else we must discuss, boy. That sword of yours is not a farmer stick, nor a practice sword for a squire. That is the sword of a Rider if I'm mistaken. So we have a problem here. Either you stole it from a dead Eorling of the King - and that's a crime we don't take lightly - , either there's more to you than what you told us... So, what will it be ? »

Raghnall looked at the door warden and cocked an eye, "and who would walk lightly armed upon the marches of any realm? Orcs and Brigands abound! Why, I myself was an unhappy guest among the Hillmen for a time. Would you travel a two days march from here without a blade or a bow?"

Post by: tomcat on Jan 31, 2019, 12:34 PM
"The sword is mine, given to me by my father, as it was given to him by his father before," said Gárulf, trying to maintain a semblance of calm. The Rohir had been concerned of being accused of theft for the occasional lamb or chickens that they had taken, but not his own property. "It was bestowed upon me after my eighteenth summer, by my father, Gármot, who sits lame upon his bed in our family home." The ire was rising. "Master Heáfod, I do not take lightly to being called a thief and I assure you it was not pried from some dead, wealthy man's hand! It has been wielded by my family and used in the hunting of orc raiders that still plague the East Emnet...while you sit here in this... gilded hall!"

Raghnall recognized the sound of his friend's voice - Gárulf was ready to demand a challenge.

« You should heed the words of your companion, who shows more good sense as a foreigner than you as a Rohir... So you're the son of Gármot. I knew him, we fought alongside many times in the past. Crippled in body he may be, but still steadfast in honor. And he would be ashamed if he'd knew how you behave tonight. Not introducing yourself, not claiming your lineage, talking to the king like that... judging an old warrior was saw more fights than many as if he was just some idler.
Do you think one becomes captain of the king's guard by birthright ? I'm but a farmer's son, I joined the watch of the east when I turned 13 because the crops were too poor to feed us all. By skill of arms maybe, but luck most likely, I survived enough battles to prove myself worthy to become a rider. I since rode with the king's Éored, smote down the enemies of Rohan, human or monstrous... One son I lost to orc raiders and another one to Dunlending pillagers. And still I defend my land.
Now if we're done with the reason why I'm sitting in this gilded hall, shall we talk about how Gármot's son is not wearing the green and gold of the riders of the Mark ? »

:ooc: I have been so torn as how to respond to Heáfod.

My PC is hot-headed and reckless, driven by the desire for vengeance - but he is not stupid and he knows he is a dangerous place. He is youthful and so feels he knows everything, but he also comes from a culture that shows respect to their elders. He also knows that they all serve a king, although I will say the former may have been done out of fear.

Anyway... I think I am going to leave his response all up to chance. Going to roll a Feat die and determine his disposition based on:

1-4-hot-headed foolishness
5-10-sympathetic to Heáfod's loss and shows deference
:~~: -the Shadow reveals itself in my PC within the king's hall (might need to roll up someone new  ;) )
:g: -apologetic and begs for forgiveness to his former trespasses

Fire burned at the younger man's spirit but he remembered Heáfod - much younger then - visiting the small hamlet where his father, Gármot, had made their home. Gárulf remembered his father and older brother mounting up and saluting his mother, as they rode off towards the plains. He remembered when Heáfod had come once more, with his own son - now of age - and once more his father had taken up arms.

Gármot had returned with a splintered leg and would never walk again without aid of crutch. Gárulf's brother did not come home. The young rogue assumed then, too, that was when Heáfod's own son was taken from him.

The fire within him was fading.

Gárulf could still see his father handing him his sword, Heordrēorig, that should have gone to the eldest in the family...but that was now Gárulf.

The young Rohir saw her broken body laying among the others. He heard his father from atop his horse calling for the riders to lay the dead Rohirrim together for burial and the dead orcs to be piled for burning. Gárulf had cleaned her as best he could and laid her down by her father, even as his own watched - the man unable to help, as he could not walk.

It was all a terrible blur and then he was once more staring at the older face of the door warden.

"Forgive my impertinence, Master Heáfod. I remember your son...he was kind to me, though I was still young and not yet able to ride. My father and I have not spoken for years, so I cannot speak as to what he thinks of me. He did not understand...and so I left his home and our town. This is why I do not wear the green and gold of the Mark. If a summons came, I was not there to heed it...but do not think I have been idle!" His fiery spirit swelled once more, "Many orcs have we slain and left as carrion in the field! Vengeance drives me, yes, but still it is service to Rohan."

Again the young Rohirrim calmed, "So, if you would excuse us we will away from the King's Hall and bring no more disrespect, but instead return to the fields to see that they are clean of the foul yrks."

He was happy to keep the woman company, and curious to hear of her home before the danger drove them from it. The knowledge though that these peoples lands had been taken from them didn't sit well. After seeing them taken care off. He set himself about preparing his war gear to accompanying the woman and her people into the countryside. He believed them at their word, he had no reason not to do so and so his mind was set to do all he can to prove to Thengel that these people deserved a home here in Rohan if their own homeland was unsafe.

He wouldn't sleep particularly well know that danger lay ahead not just from orcs or wicked men, but he felt that some of the Rohir themselves may try and sabbotage good people out of fear.

"I understand better now. I can see the pain on your face, and these eyes have seen their share of misery already, didn't they ? Listen to the advice of an old warrior ; do not let vengeance drive your life, it's a sad path leading down only to more sadness and it will end up devouring you in the end. What you've done for these people was good, such as only a noble heart could accomplish. Such are the deeds we should endlessly pursue."

The warrior suddenly seems twenty years older. But the moment quickly fades to be replaced with the usual mask of grim confidence.

"I won't tell the king about you. Not to keep your identity hidden, but to let you duly introduce yourself when the time will come and you will feel ready."
He taps Gárulf on the shoulder and turns around. "Master Raghnall, I don't know what drove you so far away from home but you have found yourself a fine companion. And I dare say it was a good day for him when he met you. Take care."

Edelyn seems pleased to talk to you, perhaps because you're a foreigner too. « How is it like where you're from ? I can see from your clothes you're not like the others. You also seem to be more... light-footed, as if there's no burden laid upon your shoulders.

In the north, life was very harsh. When we were staying near the mountains, we always had to be watchful of the orcs and the other monsters roaming in the dusk. But they were not the only monsters out there. More dangerous were those wearing a human shape. They had the semblance of men but spoke the words of the orcs, croaking dark promises of power through witchery. They fight like savage beasts, howling and spitting curses no human throat could spell. I believe they were corrupted to the core. My father believed it too, so we never agreed to welcome them, despite their threats.

Two times they tried to overwhelm us in battle. But we somehow managed to repel them. Until a great ost of orcs came down from the mountains, marching east. They were so many that we had enough time to leave, otherwise we would surely have been destroyed. They didn't spare our houses or the flock we left behind though, nor the ruins of the city by the rivers. They defiled it to such an extent that the smell of them still linger weeks after they walked through.

It was such a beautiful place, much alike this city but with walls made of concrete. More carvings and statues too. If not for the horses, we could not believe both places were built by the same people.
It seems so long ago... »

You go down the road, leaving the echoes of the feast behind you. Edoras is slowly settling for the night, with a handful of merchants and artisan stalls still lingering along the paved street. Most are selling meat on sticks, bowls of stew, or plain bread with milk. Normally they would have been long gone but the perspective of having dwarf customers seems enough to make them work extra hours.

The same thought must have occurred in the inn. When you push the door open, you find the room packed full. Fortunately, the word of the king should secure a room for you and your « guests ».

He listens to her tell of her homeland watching her admirably as she speaks so fondly of it. His face turns to sadness when she speaks of the horrors that befell it. "Your home and mine are connected by the great river Anduin, she begins in your mountains to the north and meets the sea in mines to the south. I am one of the Dunedain of the south from the Kingdom of Gondor. It is warmer there than it is here, and most of it's people live well, but our homeland has seen destruction at the hands of orc and men too and I fear it may worsen. In the East lies Mordor, and the once beautiful lands of Ithilien have long fallen to orcs. My kin still fight along the border making the servants of the enemy pay for the luxury of living in lands once belonging to us. These lands of conflict lie east of the fair city I hail from. Dol Amroth sits upon a hill over looking the bays of Belfalas where the sounds of waves hitting the rocks put you to sleep at night. It's white walls being seen from miles out at sea as can be seen the large white swans. Since I was a young boy sent to squire in Minas Tirith I've seldom spent much time in the city of my birth however, and my journeys have brought me north with King Thengel, I'm distant kin to the queen through my father and her mothers sides." He stops for a moment clearly thinking of home before giving her a soft smile. "Maybe one day I'll return home maybe in more peaceful times, but for now I feel fate has put me here to face challenges that differ from those usually faced by my people."

"I'll come and find you in the morning, it seems the same fate leading me here is connecting my fate to your own." He says after finding there was space for her and some of her people. "Good night lady Edelyn." With that he'll take his leave for the evening and as stated go and prepare his wargear and other supplies for the journey, he'll also see about aquiring a horse although he doesn't expect to get given anything that'll carry him into battle.

All the wine and ale has been drawn and drunk, the dishes are empty, and the throats of the bards and singers are coarse and dry. It's time to end the feast. The Erebor dwarves retire to the long hall provided by the king for esteemed guests, while the Rohir go to their home or camp outside the city walls.

As the dwarves make their way out, Gibor nears Tyrok. "I fear you won't be able to appreciate much of the pleasure of Edoras, lad. Dorin has spoken to the King and has been granted permission to send one of our own to accompany these refugees. If indeed that girl spoke the truth, she knows about a potential threat nearby Erebor. We need you to gather some intelligence. Beside, it will do you some good to travel with men, they are... interesting folk. Sorta..."

:ooc: Is there anything else someone wants to do before we conclude the scene ? So far we have Aghilir and Tyrok about to get some sleep before leaving tomorrow morning with Edelyn. And Roderic bound to do the same.

A new day rises upon the plains of Rohan. As the first lights of dawn shimmer upon the horizon, Edoras comes back to life. The sound of the hammer beating white hotted steel, the cheers of peddlers setting up their wares, the hooves of horses led to pasture, the clammer of sparring partners... and the moans of the citizens whose night has been shorter than expected.

When the feast has been over, some dwarves went down to the inn to have a few more cups before calling it a day. Many pints have been raised in honor of these esteemed guests, most eager to return the favors and spending mindlessly to keep the throats wet. Only a couple of hours ago did the last guest finally leave Cépia's house.

Edelyn and her two henchmen barely slept as a result, witnessed by the dark circles under their eyes. They didn't participate in the festivities and only ate a little bit of the food they were provided, saving what they could for the journey back. Old habits... Nonetheless they were ready for the journey, voicing no complaining.

Not far from the gates of the city, between the flowered barrows of the kings of old, two carts were awaiting them. As the King promised, they were filled with sacks of flour, nuts, cheese, and smoked meat. He extended his generosity to the providing of three horses to carry the refugees back to the place they might call home in three months. Provided their judges agree on that. And they were already waiting next to the carts ; three Rohirrim - two bearing the markings of Westfolde, one hailing from Eastfolde -, a Beorning, and... a dwarf. Before the night came to its end, the King has agreed to the request of Dori, and the Erebor envoy sent one of his loremasters to go along to the Wold.

He would be waiting for the refugees by the carts. Similar to Edelyn and her guard he hadn't slept particularly well either. He would be sitting astride whatever mount was made available to him wearing his armour, and his blue and white clothing. His spear and bow would be harnessed on the sadle along with his gear, while his sword and dagger would be on his belt and his lround shield bearing a battered white tree on black field was across his back. He looked to the others the king had decided would be accompanying these folk happy to see the young dwarf he had met the night before was amongst them.

Tyrôk entrusts his finery, such as it is, to the care of his master

He is dressed plainly, in hard wearing but we'll work clothes. Tunic overlain by jacket, trousers tucked into boots, a cloak as the roll stop his pack. He has a short sword by his side and an ace sling over his back, a walking staff rests on his shoulder as he sorts out his belt pouches.

He looks up

"Ah'm ready"

Raghnall and Garulf had nothing better to do. The Breelander liked the girls spirit and on their journey he had grown interested in the plight of her people. Edoras was interesting and he hoped to explore it more, but currently he did not think his companion's mood and temper would serve them well, at least at present. So the two planned to head north again.

Edoras was the first major settlement Raghnall had seen since leaving Bree almost two years before. He was amazed at what could be found, both things that he missed from home and things he never knew existed. When free of the hall of the King the first business at hand was food and drink. There was little use of coin for a bandit in the wild, but here it was of good use.

After food and drink Raghnall went to the market. Though later in the evening he was able to get most of what he needed. So when the daylight found them all assembled the Breelander had a new larger pot, a ladle, and cast iron spikes to build a tripod or a spit as was required. Also from a saddle bag he carried salt and flour, as well as a tin filled with small amounts of spices and seasoning. The King had given them food, but the Breelander determined to feed them meals.

Gárulf slid his saddle onto the back of Cleofus, cinching it tightly around the horse's belly. He then checked to ascertain that bridle and bit were comfortably in place, getting a warm snort of air in reply. The Rohirrim patted the animal and brushed down her flanks with a handful of straw.

He wondered about his companion and his desire to keep putting them in positions that had yet to be agreed upon. Gárulf did not remember Raghnall saying anything more, after the King's hall, then, "Let's find a tavern."

The next thing the man knew was the Bree-lander had committed them once more to the woman Edelyn. They would ride along with them, at least back to where their encampment waited.

"The king gives food and supplies!" Raghnall argued. "We at least should ride for a few days with a full belly."

He was a nuisance - this north-man! The rogue shook his head in agreement and spent the remainder of the day garnering things that he wanted, seeing as they were in the King's city.

With Cleofus now saddled, Gárulf hung her saddle bags across her back and tied them to the saddle. He proceeded to put the supplies he had purchased within - two blankets; a bundle of twenty arrows and an extra length of cat-gut; well-made hemp rope twenty arms in length; ten iron nails; a hammer; a whetstone; and two small wax-sealed pots of oil.

The oil pots he wrapped in spare cloth so that the clay would not be easily broken, if they rode hard. It was a sturdy, baked, glazed clay and he was not too worried, but still better to be cautious. He was not certain if the oil would be needed for cooking, fire, or to water-proof a skin, but it was good to have it in need.

Now prepared, Gárulf mounted and rode out to where the others assembled.

The Man Eriador smiled.

"We are much better provisioned and stocked than we have been in a long time!"

He sat upon his horse, not akwardly but not as familiar to the animal as his companion.

"Ahhh..." He looked sheepish.

"I should have gotten more arrows as well."

Garulf reached under a blanket and tossed him another bundle he had bought specifically for this moment.

"We wont need to cook if we're dead Raghnall."

"True enough, the ways of the wild are not yet well known to me. My aim will be true, when called upon. Of that you can depend."

He mindlessly whistled a tune and watched the others prepare for the journey. The two who accompanied Edelyn were still closed mouth and few words had they uttered on their long journey. Raghnall stopped as if suddenly remembering something and dismounted quickly.

"Edelyn, I almost forgot!"

He handed her a small bag that made the sound of wooden objects when he handled it. He looked expectently for her to open it, so she did.

A small smile cracked upon her face when she looked inside. There were wooden soldiers, some horses, a couple of rag dolls, and ball.

"I'm a little old for these."

Raghnall laughed. "After such a long journey I thought since the needs of the belly were met by the King a little joy could be sprinkled on the small ones as well. I thought they would be readliy accepted if they came from you."

He smiled again and fidgeted with his sword belt. Then remounted next to his grim faced companion.

Roderic nods a greeting to the company gathered outside the gates in the cool morning air. After weeks of relative inactivity in Edoras the prospect of exploring further out into the plains of Rohan felt good. Goldred and Adrahil had wished him well as he left the inn that morning. Both of them reminded him that they required news on anything that might interfere with their trading interests across the East and Westfold. Goldred had provided Roderic with a fine looking grey stallion named Arroch. 'Look after him Roderic' said Goldred, 'he is even tempered and easy to ride, and will see you well across the many leagues you have to travel'.

Roderic noticed that like him the party appeared well supplied for their coming journey. From the sacks of food piled high in the wagons they would certainly eat well – at least for a while.

He looks to the others who have been tasked with accompanying Edelyn and her people. He nods to them all in greetings. "I see that a few of you are Rohirim, what can you tell me about the lands that we will be travelling into?" He asks looking at, at least two of his new companions who bare the fair complexion of the men of Rohan. "Are we likely to meet any danger on the road?"
Title: Re: Edoras - Heart of the Riddermark
Post by: Telcontar on Feb 12, 2019, 12:44 PM
The Breelander laughed. "All roads are dangerous. This is a lesson every mother has pressed upon her sons, and all have left unheeded. For one step on a road and who knows where you will end up. You shall see grass and hills, rivers and falls, vacant views and herds of horses. There are orcs too, to be sure, too many for anyones tastes. We'll need a watch, but no idle brigand will stop a party this well armed and with so many."

Gárulf stood silently by as the Bree-man answered. He looked around him at the gathered new company and thought whether Raghnall's words had merit. He came to a silent conclusion contradictory to the North-man, Yes...I would stop this caravan with my riders.

His patience began to wane, "The sun rides the morning sky and there are many green miles before us - mayhaps we exchange our pleasantries upon the trail."

Edelyn looks obviously relieved to see the familiar faces of Gárulf and the Bree-lander. She rubs a wooden horse toy for a moment, remembering some distant memories of a better time, then stuffs them in a pocket.

She looks also pleased when Egilhir appears, perhaps even blushing a little bit but it might be from the cold.

The two westfolders make a grim lot. They're not happy to be there and don't bother hiding it. Whenever they speak of Edelyn or her two henchmen, they refer to them as « strangers » or « foreigners ». Should you talk with them it's plain they agree with Eogar ; the refugees are Dunlendings in disguise and an ambush should be expected anytime soon. For that reason they refuse to leave he main road and its occasional post guards and watchtowers. Aart and Galan are their names.

« You should watch out for these people. Dunlendings are less than human. They are horse eaters !Mark my words, there's orc blood running in their veins. »

Should you decide to follow their advice, you could indeed hope for a safe journey to the Wold. If a safe journey exist anymore, that is... Beside, following the river would assure you easy food supply thanks to the merchant boats and fish.

The Rider of the Third Marshal is a more pleasant fellow. The East is used to trade with foreigners, and indeed makes good money out of it. His name, Artamir, actually testifies of a strong Gondorian influence, perhaps even a parent.

Gibor the dwarf nears Tyrôk. He's clearly in bad lack of sleep, his breath still smells of ale. He's been one of the last braves standing before Cépia's house closed its doors for a couple of hours. « Rough night eh, lad ? Hope you got some more sleep. » He shivers and gets his heavy woolen cloak closer. « Remember, try to get as much informations as you can. We need to know what's still lingering in Gundabad. Can't risk to let orcs or evil men regroup themselves. These two over there seem to know what they're doing, stick with them. They were at the inn yesterday night, the northman took over the kitchen when the innkeeper went to get another cask of ale. He cooked us sausages and eggs, probably saved my life. » He laughs loudly. « Be safe, lad. Enjoy your adventure. » Gibor seems a bit nostalgic as he returns to the long house provided to the other dwarves.

Barak and Wil, two commoner will go with you and drive the carts. Artamir looks at the whole group. « Well then, it seems we're all set. Let's go. Gárulf, lead the way. »

Goldred watched the small convoy leave Edoras. The merchant rubbed his hands together, despite the large fire warming more than enough his opulent housing. The furnitures alone could be sold to buy several farmer housings, but to Goldred it was but a poor reminder of the large estate he owned back in the days of Fengel King. But soon, soon, it could all be his again. That and much much more.
He smiled when he thought of the Beorning bodyguard he hired just the day before. He couldn't believe his luck. His investment will be soon reimbursed tenfold.
He took a quiver and a piece of parchment. When he was done writing some short lines, he folded it, sealed it, and handed it to one of his illiterate servant. "take that to him". The servant took the folded paper but seemed to hesitate. "What is it?" asked an irritated Goldred. "He never killed you, did he ? Here, take that for your trouble." He threw the man a coin, and finally the servant took off...

Up on top of Edoras, the King and his Queen also looked the convoy slowly disappear behind the horizon. « What do you think my dear ? » Morwen was speaking in Sindarin, as they always use to do when they are in private. The rich elvish language reminded them of their days back in Gondor, when Thengel was not yet King of Rohan and things were easier.

Noises of combat could be heard from the porch ; the young Theoden was already training with Heáfod. The prince was already much more a Rohir than his father, and that was good for the future. But what kind of a kingdom would he inherit ?

« I don't believe they are Dunlendings. So far east from the mountains, it doesn't make sense. Nor does it to walk across all of Rhovanion. They could have settled in the realm of the skinchanger or the Brown, there's space enough. » answered the King.

« Is it not reason enough to seek the land of their forefathers ? » hinted the Queen.

« To the expanse of the lives of the younglings and elders ? That's a heavy price. I fear they hide something from us, but we must bide our time until we know more. In the meantime I hope they will make a safe journey back and find some solace. »

« There's also the reaction of Eógar. » sighed Morwen.« It's unusual of him to be on the edge that way. Something must go wrong in the West. »
