Title: Sebolto's door
Post by: tomcat on Apr 26, 2012, 10:46 AM
Kaida dismounted from her speeder bike and quickly ran to where the Grans lay dead by the broken E-web cannon. She knelt to confirm that each of the mercenaries were no longer a threat and then went to the large door. The stone face of the canyon wall was carved in the manner of a Dug head - Sebolto's to be precise. Vines hung down like long strands of braided hair, although the Dug species did not have such attributes, and beneath the upper lip jowls was cut a door. The noblewoman could easily see the activation controls that were once hidden, but now left revealed by the retreating Gran soldier. She began to hear sitreps from her companions coming through her headset and so she took a position to guard the door in case anything came through it, while her freinds climbed to her location.

It took about ten minutes for them all to climb the tiered rocks with Logar coming last pulling the other speeder bike behind him. The E-web cannon that Kaida had secured to it still there.

The sun passed through its midday position. It was easy to see now, the great canopy of trees withdrawn to the edges of the vale. The heat and humidity were thick and oppressive and the team felt winded even though the climb was not great. Kaida relayed the fact that no one had come through the door, though it had been activated not long ago. She pointed to the revealed keypad that blinked with lights.

Brim went to the noblewoman seeing that she had evidence of multiple wounds, "Come, Kaida. You need tending to." Truth was, there were a few of them that needed aid. The Rodian continued, "We should patch our wounds before we go on. Fett, you are sure that this attack will bring the dark jedi to us?"

Fett's head turned to Brim, "He'll come."

Static filled the handset as BIT worked the frequencies trying to ascertain which bandwidth was the primary source of communication with the facility. Finally a channel opened up of all noise and there was a clean, clear signal. BIT then adjusted the communicator's squawk so that it would make a continuous, shrill sound and he filled the clear channel with the terrible noise. It wouldn't last for long - in fact it would only last as long as the handheld communicator's batteries would hold out, or until the facility changed their bandwidth. In any case, no one would be talking to much on this channel for a while.

While BIT filled his time with jamming the communications and Brim tended the wounded, Sam moved to the electronic door along with Boba Fett. The droid's programming was a hodge podge but within the lines of code was that of a mech. He began to look at the control pad and saw that it had nine character pads that would either need pushed in sequence, or bypassed. The bounty hunter stood next to Sam and began to consider the best way to clear the pass through.

Logar'Dan took up a positon of overwatch and kept an eye on the way they had come. The soldier was not in the mood to have any potential threats that they might have missed catch them from behind.

Farok accepted the fact that the majority of the time he would be on this planet it would be as a walking wounded member of this group. Approaching the door he looked at key pad and tried to judge the width of the door.

"Can we blast it down with the web blaster or a rocket? Perhaps I can cut through it." The one time jedi stepped back and looked up to see if there were any other openings in.

:ooc: Okay, Farok and Brim have both sensed the danger of the door through the force. These two PC's may do a Reaction of any kind (JUMP for cover, USE THE FORCE to do whatever, etc.). Give me your PC's idea in the split second and I will translate it into any mechanics I need from you. Then, we'll see where the results land.

The Gran mercenary who had escaped from the oncoming attackers had passed through Sebolto's door but he did not intend to allow these intruders to have it easy. Inside the small cave behind the door was a limited storage of weapons, food, and explosives. The Dugs were none too worried about placing a bunch of high-tech equipment out in this jungle valley, but they had no problem supplying cheap deterrents.

He had grabbed one of the explosive charges and ran a quick line of synthrope from its trigger pin to the door. When it would slide open, the trigger would be activated and the charge would detonate. "Too bad for any that were in the way," thought the mercenary. The potential blast was even higher if the charge caused the few remaining packs to go off, as well. To add to the harm, the Gran grabbed a couple of fist-sized stones and laid them on top of and in front of the explosive. He then turned and ran towards the opposite end of the cave.

Not long after, Sam deactivated the locking mechanism to the door and then hit the button to activate its release. Behind him, almost instantly Brim and Farok both shouted a warning.

Farok felt the unmistakable sensation of the force alerting him to immediate danger. As the door began to slide open the seconds seemed to crawl by. The one time Jedi reached out to the force to grab hiold of the door and use it as a giant shield from whatever blast or objects he felt were going to come hurtling towards the party.

While doing so he managed to yell, "Get Back!"

:ooc: Brim has no force powers to speak of to aid here and he is too far to pull someone back.

Here is how this is going to work out - the damage of the charge by itself is: 10d6

Because it is not a shaped charge it only has a 1-square burst, but because the Gran set it up with the rocks and that the energy is being released in a cave, and that there are more explosives sitting there, I am increasing the damage potential beyond the 1-square burst to a cone-shaped burst that will do:

Full damage within 2-squares
Half damage 3-6 squares
Quarter damage 7-9 squares
No damage beyond 9 squares

Also, damage will be increased by a degree of +5d6 (an additional d6 for the additional charges) plus +3d4 for the shrapnel.

I will roll the total damage in this roll. From that, I will deduct the amount of absorbed damage from Farok. This will be calculated based on Farok's UtF roll of 15, which would cause 2d6 damage. I will reverse that and say 2d6 damage is blocked. Also, the door has a damage reduction (10) and hit point value (50) which will also reduce the overall damage. Because the door is attached in its guided tracks and also the relatively weak UtF roll, I am only going to grant 25 of the hit point value of the door.

So the defensive potential from Farok is 2d6+35.

:00: Explosion damage:

:ooc: Awesome! that leaves me with a rockin 1 hp.

Farok tried to contain the blast coming from the cave, but his inability to concentrate on it for very long meant that he wasnt able to do exactly what he wanted to do. As he flew through the air away from the exploding passage entrance he knew that he had contained at least some of the blast. He was reassured that that would be of assistance to his friends as he crashed smoking and smashed on the ground as the door flew over and away from him as the blast took it from his control.

It was as if thunder clapped directly within the valley.

The explosive charge burst causing a chain reaction with the other munitions and all of the energy was directed in both directions, but only one side of the cave had a release. Sam, Fett and Farok were caught directly and if it were not for Farok's Force-aided reaction, they may have all been dead. The former jedi grabbed the opening door with the Force and yanked it down as the trap was triggered. The door was peppered by shrapnel, allowing only a small amount to get through, and the energy of the blast shoved it out of its housing and tore it asunder. With Farok holding it with the Force, the door whipped up and over their heads, allowing the remaining energy to pummel them to the ground - all three were knocked back a good number of feet. Even at his distance, Logar'Dan felt the pressure wave roll over him and he felt like he was punched in the gut. Fett felt the pain from the explosion but it was minimalized by the Mandalorian armor that covered him - Sam and Farok were not as fortunate.

:ooc: No, Tom, I corrected my formula of explosives.

Damage to PC's
Farok 59/72 CT -2
Fett 28/87
Sam 67/78 CT -1
Logar 18/72

BIT shook his head a little to clear the cloud of the unexpected explosion.  "Really, that shouldn't have been a surprise," he thought given his previous experiences with them.  Regardless of his thoughts, he moved quickly over to the nearest of the fallen to inspect them to see if he could give any aid.

For Caden, everything was loud... then quiet, as his ears rang and he watched his companions' forms cast about by the explosion.
It was only seconds until he found his bearings once more, but it seemed like a lifetime.

He patted himself down; he seemed to be uninjured.
Unpacking a medkit, he ran over to the fallen, hoping to taking care of whomever he could.

At Farok's warning Kaida had gone prone and covered her head. The concussive blast left her largely unscarred save for the pelting of pebbles and small rocks and the incessant ringing she now had in her ears. As soon as it passed, she stood shakily and took stock of the situation. They were at their the most vulnerable now. Stunned and wounded from this blast, if the enemy followed up their booby trap with an assault...

"Defensive positions everyone! And bring me the wounded!" she shouted out orders and then ran to the most wounded Farok first and began doing first aid.

Logar sprinted from his position to where the ruin of the entrance still smoked. He peered through the mess with the enhaned vision of his helmet, his blaster held ready. There were no threats waiting and so he moved inside. He followed down the short tunnel until he came to another door. It, too, was electronic and it was shut.

Farok felt another dose of anesthezine enter his system and he laid his head back and let himself drift. This stuff was better than all the booze he had consumed on Tatooine. It did the trick though. The pain from burns and cuts was immediately subdued and the bacta that was laced in it began its magic of repairing tissue. It would not be the same as being immersedin a bacta-tank, but it helped keep people moving on the field. Boba Fett saw that Kaida was looking at him, only a modicum of interest to his well-being. He waved her off and took care of his own needs.

It was Sam that was faring the worst. He had taken a heavy hit in the previous engagemen and now had been front and center to a large explosion. His new armor plates were dented, bent and even torn in places. The underlying framework and circuitry of his body was also showing severe damage. He would need to shutdown to work on himself but they did not have the time right now. The droid began to run internal status reports and shunted power from less needed systems. He also shutdown unneeded software programming that consumed part of his CPU, which in turn consumed power.

Logar's voice came from the tunnel, "There is another door here... not sure if I want to open it!"

Farok wiped his mouth with the back of his good hand. The cigar that he had managed to make it through most of the engagement with was history.
"Thanks Princess, that one was pretty close."

The one time Jedi got off the ground and looked around, frowning at the damaged droid, "Looks like he is out for a bit."

The one armed man looked around at his companions to see how everyone was looking, the blasted and twisted door was behind him a ways and he smiled at it. "Old Jedi saying, 'When blast and Jedi meet, Jedi duck and use large metal door.' Remember that one Brim its a keeper. So, where is our next disaster?"

Hearing the clones voice from down the hallway and reference to a lightsaber brought him back around.

"Yes, we could try cutting through it. Are there any other openings like a window? I would have preferred guard dogs to guard blasts, but we can give the old light stick saw trick a try."

Farok shook his head, "I did, but it doesnt work that way. Perhaps we could take the power packs from the web blasters and blast it out ourselves? Cutting through it will take us awhile, but with our Droid friend down I dont think we have any other options."

Farok went to inspect the door to see if he could and how long it would take to cut through it and to see if the force alerted him to any more traps.

Farok felt nothing from the Force while standing in front of the second door. He looked it up and down, while Logar stepped aside. It was like the other door made of steel but camouflaged on the outside to hide its purpose. The fallen jedi was certain his lightsaber would make quick workof the door.

Kaida faced a new problem - her speeder bikes would not fit through the cave. They would have to leave them here and come back to retrieve them, or perhaps Kara could come. Maybe it best that Sam take them back to the ship. The droid was heavily damaged and needed time to repair. Kara was a mech and it would at least put her to use.

"Sam, take these bikes and bug out - get back to the ship," Caden said. "If it gets too hairy, leave 'em. It's you that I need in one piece."
He knew the droid would complain - he had been loyal to Caden for a long time - but suspected that Sam would run the numbers and see that it was the best option.
"I can't keep putting you back together every time." He said the last with a smile, and solidly clapped his friend on the shoulder with a clank. "Be safe."

"Caden..." the droid tried to protest, but he knew the human was right. He was heavily damage and his exitstence was in peril. Droids were faithful due to their programming, but those that attained a level of freedom also attained a level of self-preservation. Sam picked up his hat and adjusted his long duster jacket then nodded. "I will do as you say. Once at the ship, commence a maintenance routine but non-shutdown so I will be available."

He walked over to the first speeder and checked the straps that held them together. Kaida backed away and they all watched as the droid mounted and flew away, back the way they had come.

"Right then, that leaves us." Farok ignited his light saber and stood before the door.

"Let's get going before our commando party gets any smaller. We still have the main course before us."

The unannointed Jedi took up a position of the Makashi style. "Brim; leverage, position, advantage...this is The Way of the Ysalamiri, the Makashi style. The style of choice for duelists and one armed men."

In graceful balanced strokes Farok made short work of the door. Brim was beginning to see that the drunk from Tantoonie actually did possess grace and poise when he wielded his light saber. The group noticed as well that the force user adapted a formal style but personalized it so the sweep and sounds of the light saber had a type of music to them. A subtle elegance that coupled with his bizzare war cries had a strange complimenting and intimidating effect. A sense of rhythmic onslaught and martial music.

BIT moved out of the tunnel through the now removed door and was again standing under sunlight. Three large trees grew before him, but their foliage was not enough to block the sky. The roar of a waterfall filled the air and BIT could see his was walking out onto a ridgeline cleft in the high stone walls that rose above. The ridge extended out some good 25' at a pointand then plummeted down into a swirling mist of foggy spray from a huge waterfall drop.

There was no one or no thing in sight, although there was a sniper blind above in the trees, but it was empty. BIT stepped down a few natural steps and out onto the ridge. If it were not for the fact that they had almost been killed just moments before, the scene would have been breathtaking.

BIT keeps close to the rock wall and glanced around looking for a path or possible direction the guy went.

"This is where I come in," said BIT.   He shouldered his rifle and pulled out his blaster pistol.  "I'll report for you to advance.  If there are any problems... you'll know it when you hear it."

"Be my guest," Caden said with a wave of his arm. "Good luck."

Boba Fett moved past Farok, too, exiting the small cave. The bounty hunter had his blaster up against his chest as he moved out onto the overlook. Behind him, Brim followed.

BIT moved down along the wall until he came to where it ended and he was able to look out over the canyon. A mountain rose behind him and made it so that the only path to follow was a thin ridgeline along its height. The ridgeline entered a natural cleft in the mountain's side which went back until it ended in stone. The river below filled the cleft's basin and created a tumult of swirling currents. The small path followed back until it too thinned down to a point where no one would want to walk along it without climbing gear. The only other thing BIT could see was a rope suspension bridge that hung out over the cleft from one side to the other. On the opposite side looked to be a small bunker made of a tanned stone or brick. Raising his scope to his eye, he looked to see any movement and he saw a Gran mercenary finishing the crossing of the bridge.

"Its clear to the edge of the cliff," he reports back to the group.  Waiting for the Gran to disappear, he dives off the side of the cliff, activating his jetpack.  Skirting the cliffs, he stays low so as to not attract attention.  He crosses the river and comes up the cliff on the other side and lands, looking to secure it so the others can cross.  With rifle out now, he scans the area for surveillance tech or more guards.

Farok so the new member of the group press forward to clear the area. He didnt question the new comers loyalty, in combat strange friends appeared, it was one of the known elements of the galaxy. Using this the time the new guy needed to clear the area the old padawan tried again to locate the Dark Jedi he knew was lurking somewhere in the vicinity.

:ooc: Hey Tom, I am not going to say that Farok knows what he is sensing, but for player knowledge, I don't want you to keep mistaking his senses as the Dark Jedi. Here is the description I gave you a while back on your first UtF success:

Quote from: tomcatFarok closed his eyes and reached out through the Force. He tried to center on any movements in the Force, any feelings... and he found them. Dark. Ugly. The kind of feelings that nightmares were drawn from. In his mind shadowy shapes loped toward him and each had burning yellow eyes.

Interpret as you will...  ;)

Farok reached out once more and attuned himself with the Force. He breathed softly and listened to the living planet around him. It was alive and bright within the Force and the living energy moved in patterns and colors that became almost a map, or a vision of what was before them. But it was the shadows that moved amongst those bright spots that Farok searched for, and some were darker than others. He took another deep breath and let himself go a bit further and then they appeared. It was as if he saw giant crawling spider-shapes moving within the Force - dark and evil and within the shadows peering eyes glowed yellow.

The former jedi felt a bright spot, a warmth that he recognized within the Force as friendship, if not companionship. The spot of warmth was BIT, their new ally, and Farok felt him at his distance away across the canyon. Unfortunately for the mercenary, the dark-shapes loomed near and over him!

BIT landed softly upon the alternate cliffside and looked at the small structure. It was simple and appeared to be made of brick covered in a stucco plaster to keep the rain waters from permeating the cracks. There was an evident long, thin window on its face that looked out over the canyon and the rope bridge. It offered perfect vantage and protection for any defenders that might be within, but it had no glass or other source of closure. The building was nothing more than a guard bunker that offered ample protection but meager comforts. Across from him, BIT could see where the bridge extended from and it was another bunker like the one he stood near tucked in an elevated rise on the side of the canyon.

On the opposite side, Fett moved towards the ridgeline from which BIT had jumped. He approached the small edge carefully and sighted across the canyon with his carbine. It was efficient enough to cover BIT and to see if the merc had any approaching enemies, but the bounty hunter knew he needed to get over there. He thought about expending some of his own jetpack fuel, but decided no for the moment. They had a man in place there and he figured it better to save the precious fuel and just cross the bridge. Keeping his blaster aimed, he started down the ridgeline.

Behind him, Caden, Kaida and finally Logar made their way out onto the shelf.

Farok stepped out on to the plateau that the rest of his companions occupied. He marveled at all the water that he saw before him, the sun dried desert creature had grown accustomed with all his time living with and adopting the attitudes of the Sand people and other Waste dwellers to hold water in high regard. To them water was a blessing, a currency, and something to war over. Here the one armed man saw it has he had years ago, a natural wonder and an integral part of a planet not at war with itself for its use.

Releasing the light saber it dropped from his good hand, went out, and hung from its tether on his wrist. Reaching into his cloak he removed another cigar. Those he carried with him had greedily sucked up the moisture in the planet and had become almost wet to the feel of the desert warrior. Placing it between his teeth he didn't light it. The comforting taste of the tobacco was there none the less and he didn't have to fight to keep it burning in this wet place.

Looking again at the waterfall he felt a desire to show Masaaraq the beauty of this planet and in his thoughts he then remembered the time of his younger years at the side of his master, seeing places like this for the first time. Those happier thoughts quickly drifted to their last mission together on Ruusan and the one armed man scowled. Igniting his light saber he moved to catch up with his companions and to combat the new terrors their foes and this planet conjured to stop them.

:ooc: Okay... not being a pain here, but how. The only thing he sees so far is a small, two-story stucco building with two window slots on it face and a rope bridge connecting to its top. The bridge stretches across the ravine to a similar, albeit larger building, on the other side. There is no glass in the long slot windows, making them more of a firing slot than a source for light and fresh air.

The companions all followed Fett down the thin sliver of ledge that led into the cleft, towards where the rope bridge spanned. It was Brim and then Farok immediately behind the bounty hunter, followed on by Kaida, Caden and Logar. The soldier took up the rear walking in an awkward fashion so as to keep an eye on where they had just come. Maybe it was due to Logar'Dan's position, or his slower shuffling gait, but red energy flashed across the ravine at his armored form. BIT saw the shot flare from somewhere atop the building but it was deadly quiet.

The Bando Gora sniper that lay in wait raised his exotic weapon and took aim at Logar. It was an interesting mix of a simple blowgun with dart-like ammo that was enhanced by the powers of the darkside of the Force. The thing could be fired at deadly speeds and the Force added a dark energy to make the darts lethal.

With Logar reeling from the sniper shot, Boba Fett went into action. He did not want to be caught upon this shelf. Nor did he want his companions to be the targets of any more sniper fire. His eye went to a command on his heads-up-display within his helmet and it took a fraction of a second for the suit to get his command and then his jetpack ignited rocketing him across the ravine.

BIT also became active. He grabbed the corner of the building and hauled himself up using the open-slotted window. It took him a few moments to scale the structure and he watched as Boba Fett came to a landing on the roof.

Kaida cried out, "He needs help!" But she couldn't get past Caden on the precarious ledge. Logar heard her cry but waived her off. "MOVE!" he yelled through his helmet.

Fett landed hard, skidding to a halt as he did, but he never saw the shape come from below him to attack. It was fast and brutish and its fists slammed into him. BIT saw the thing that attacked Boba Fett - it was man-shaped, but somewhat simian. It loped more than walking erect. It was dressed in black garb with a hood over its head. It was near-human with black-mottled skin and eyes that glowed a sickening yellow. Also on the roof, laying prone, was another of the Bando Gora - its sniper rifle at the ready.

We are essentially in a combat round. Fett used his actions to fly; BIT used his actions to climb; the two Gora have also gone, so that leaves the remaining PC's. Just so you know, the sniper Gora is laying prone and is very difficult to see to fire at him.

Caden saw the flash of... something... fly across the ravine and strike Logar. He had already been reaching back to help keep the soldier from falling off the cliff by the time by the time he heard Kaida shout.

Logar, however, was a tough man, and once Caden heard his order to run, he did so as best he could, while continuing to look back, ready to assist Logar if he needed it.

:ooc: If Logar can't get across safely by himself, Caden will assist and attempt first aid. If he can, then Caden will find a shady spot and use his carbine's sight to try and spot the sniper.
