Even as the arrows flew off into the night or found their targets, the charging orcs slammed into the Company's position. Shûkrag eyed the largest shape he could see in the darkness and snarled as he attacked. On his left and right, his lads joined the fray.
Bandy could see three shapes remain at a distance.
:ooc: The orcs attack:
Shûkrag spends 1 hate to activate Wicked Cunning and gains a +12 Parry bonus
Shûkrag attacks Grimbeorn

In his charge upon the orc archers, the great orc lept into the path of Grimbeorn, cutting him off from advancing further. The fellowship's hands were full with this war party, arrows flying hither and thither in the dusky light while blades clashed. Setting himself in for a fight, Grimbeorn plants his feet and sets his shield upon the brute. With a might bellow, he takes his first swing.

:ooc: Hope, if necessary.
The orcs' advance confirms Arbogast's worst fears - the great orc is at least as cunning in battle as he is. As the archers continue to harass the fellowship with arrows, Shûkrag leads his followers up the side of the hill until they nearly flank their foes. Denied the use of higher ground, Grimbeorn strikes wildly. But the great orc moves with amazing speed for his size and stays always just a hair away from the Beorning's blade.
Meanwhile, Arbogast and Rorin are pressed by orcs bearing heavy spears and broad shields. The Fire-watcher avoids a strong blow, and responds in kind...

... but steel bites shields on both sides leaving neither the worse. Arbogast glances at Essylt, who watches the fight with desperation in her eyes and naught in her hands.
"Bandy," he cries, hoping that the orcs will be less familiar with the tongue of the Vales than with the Common tongue, "bewierp þu hire þín hypeseax!"
:ooc: "... throw you her your sword!"
His eyes narrowed, his lips curling back, Rorin strikes at the orc before him. Each of the creatures that fell was another step towards settling the ancient grudges of his people.
:ooc: So, I'm pulling my trick of rolling for Steve again because I suspect Tom is waiting his turn to go in initiative order, like the well-mannered young man that he is.

Bandy was loathe tonpart with his sword. Too frequently it had become his weapon of last defense. There was no time to deliberate.
The Hobbit slipped the leather baldric over his shoulder and threw it towards the woman. Even if she was untrained it was better than teeth and hands.
The archer of the Shite then let go with a quick shot at the orc that Grimbeorn faced.

The arrow struck true and with a bit of luck had passed between the shoulder joint.
