The sound of heavy feet was suddenly heard, charging towards where the companions had prepared themselves. The orcs had circled around the hills and now came at them from a new direction. The darkness had not hidden them from their enemies - they had made too much noise.

With the thundering of boots also came terrible war cries in an ugly language, along with the hiss of arrows back and forth in opening volleys.

:ooc: Three of the orcs carry horned bows as one of their weapons. Before we begin this, i need everyone's declared stances.

I am positioning Rorin Defensive - if you are around, Steve, and want something different, let me know

As quick as he can, Arbogast turns to face the fellowship's new foes.  Kneeling beneath his shield, he feels the impact as one of the heavy orcish arrows bites into the wood.  Looking up as the war cries carry up the hill, he beholds a titan of an orc, nearly the size of the troll at the ford.  A vision of doom in black mail, it advances surely - almost casually - up the hill.  As it does, its eyes meet those of the Fire-watcher.  In them, he sees a promise of his death in fear and pain, far from his home and kin.

He looks away, desperate not to meet that murderous gaze.  In doing so, he regains enough sense to look for Essylt.  Where was the Hill-woman?  And could she be trusted?

The woman was there, in the oncoming blackness of night. Her form was crouched low, but she could sense Arbogast's eyes upon her.

"Have you a spear? I can fight!" she hissed, even as arrows struck.

:ooc: Bandy is in a rearward stance.

The Hobbit quickly moved in the tall dead grass of spring to take up a position on the high ground of the hill. He saw the archers in the dim light fire upon his friends and thought to take them from the fight as quik as possibble. The Hobbit brought the string of his bow to his ear and let fly a deadly dart.
