MASS COMBAT
:~~: One of the East Bight-men is slain. If rolled again in the following round, Ceawin is gravely wounded.
1, 2The allies are hard-pressed to hold the enemy back. One of the East Bight-men is wounded – or, if any are already wounded, then one of them is slain. The defensive circle is being pressed - if this is rolled again, the spiders also slay a horse.
3, 4The East Bight-men hold their line and keep fighting.
5, 6The allies fight bravely, pushing the enemy back. Black spider blood spills across the forest floor. If this result is rolled twice in a row, then the allies slay one of the spiders!
7, 8 One of the spiders is slain.
9, 10 Two of the spiders is slain.
:g:Three of the spiders are slain.

Esgalwen did not wait to see if Bandy's arrows were aimed at the creature who charged her. She spun into action, her sword hacking into the horrible creature as she did. All the while, the Ranger prayed that Idunn had not fallen to the spider's initial pounce.

There is a terrible crunching sound as Grimbeorn's axe smashes open the carapace of a spider. It's large body slumps to the ground, the legs wiggle a  few moments, and then the thing expires.

Arbogast quickly decides that an axe to the abdomen is the most effective form of distraction and swings the axe of Theodwin, as yet untested in battle, in a powerful downward strike.

Weapon stats are in my signature block.

By the way, Arbogast and Idunn should both be able to take advantage of their Woodcrafty ability.  I don't know about Idunn, but that should bump Arbogast's basic Parry score up to 9.

Idunn surveyed the landscape, briefly noting where Caewin had ended up in the midst of the battlefield. Already the shieldmaiden could feel the blood of battle heightening her senses, making time seem to slow a bit. Sannasar felt warm in her hands. Before her, a spider had dropped down and hissed menacingly. Idunn planted her feet and waited, a grim and confident countenance gracing her face. She allowed the foul creature to advance on her... once... twice it tried to bat away the glinting spear, wary of the weapon's bite. Feinting slightly, as though dropping her guard, she invited the spider advance even closer.

It didn't see Sindjarfr until it was too late. The massive hound flanked up allow the spider's side, a wild bark suddenly startling the wretched beast. The spider reared up quickly to attack the hound, and that was the moment Idunn was looking for. Sannasar slid forward with all the force the shieldmaiden, driving it's sharpen point deep into the underbelly of the beast before sliding quickly out once more. Black ichor gushed out as the spider squealed and writhed in pain before succumbing to the wound.

Idunn looked to try and move in closer to the Lord of Sunstead, Sindjarfr by her side.

:ooc: So, my understanding is that Idunn scored a great success in her attack and caused 12 points of damage to bring the spider down to 0... am I right?

:ooc: Hey all, here is the results from your attacks:

• Grimbeorn rolled a :g: success - 9 END and piercing hit, which was failed [DEAD spider]
• Esgalwen rolled an 18 success - 7 END loss
• Arbogast rolled a 17 success - 5 END loss
• Rorin rolled a 21 Extraordinary success - 20 END loss [DEAD spider]
• Idunn rolled a 15 Great success - 12 END loss [DEAD spider]
• Bandy rolled a 29 Extraordinary success - 11 END and piercing hit, which was failed [DEAD spider]

The companions suddenly found themselves ringed by the terrible creatures, even as some were slain.

Bandy watched as his arrow pierced a spider that had jumped to the ground, taking the monster in its mouth and driving all the way in to the feathers. It collapsed and did not move again and the Hobbit breathed a sigh of relief. Idunn, too, had the pleasure of seeing a spider die, but there were many more.

The men of Sunstead pressed the attack, but the spiders did not relent. They wanted their prey and drew the circle smaller around the beleaguered party.

Ensnare: If the Ensnare roll is successful and produces a great or extraordinary success, the spider immediately attacks its victim using its sting.

Seize the Victim: If the creature's main form of attack has hit, the creature may hold on to the target to reduce the mobility of the victim: a seized victim cannot change stance, and sees its Parry rating reduced to half (rounding fractions up).

A hero may free himself by forfeiting his attack and rolling Athletics against a TN equal to 10, plus the Attribute level of the seizing creature.

The seizing creature cannot attack with its main weapon as long as it is seizing the target (but can freely use a secondary attack if it possesses one).

The spiders were ferocious in their attacks, but also quite cunning.

The creatures hoisted themselves on four legs and then webbing started to spray out from their spinnerets. Using their two back and two front legs, the spiders directed the silk and quickly ensnared many of the company. Rorin felt himself coated with sticky webs and then the spider was on him, weighing him down and trying to stab him with a cruel hooked sting.

Not far away from the Dwarf, Esgalwen slashed out in defense at the spider in front of her, but it, too, rendered her immobile. It stabbed with its sting and the woman was hard pressed to defend. Suddenly, another spider seeing the advantage raced in and stabbed her in the lower back with its poisonous barb.

The Dúnadan woman gasped as she felt the wound and then the weight of both spiders were on top of her.

:ooc: If you're trying to insinuate anything about me being consistently the worst damage-dealer in the party, be aware that I will shrug off your gender-based slurs, sir!

While I'm whining, I should point out that you're still taking a discount on my Parry rating.  If I'm adding it right, it should be 9 (favoured Wits rating due to being Woodcrafty) +9 (Open stance) +3 (shield) = 21.  It doesn't matter this time because the spider rolled a goddamn  :~~:, but it may yet matter in future rounds!

So, Arbogast is free! You can change whatever tests you need in round 2.
