MASS COMBAT |
:~~: | One of the Mountain-men is slain. |
1, 2 | The allies are hard-pressed to hold the enemy back. One of the mountain-men is wounded – or, if any are already wounded, then one of them is slain. The bastion of Mountain Hall is being pressed - if this is rolled again, the goblins set another building on fire. |
3, 4 | The Mountain-men hold their line and keep fighting. |
5, 6, 7, or 8 | The allies fight bravely, pushing the enemy back. Black Goblin blood spills across the stones. If this result is rolled twice in a row, then the allies slay one of the goblins! |
9 or 10 | One of the goblins are slain. |
:g: | Two of the goblins are slain. |
Grimbeorn bellows under the onslaught; he won't let this filth win the day.

Seeing Bandy hard-pressed in the melee, Arbogast shifts a little to his left, letting the Hobbit have some of the benefit of his shield. "When you can, my friend, fall back! I saw Men gathered by the edge of the stream when the alarm-call went out. Fly, if you may, and find what they saw! Mayhap there is someone injured who needs the help of your good Hobbit sense. Mayhap we are to be attacked from yet another direction, and your keen eyes and steady bow-hand may slow them down!"
Knowing not whether Bandy has heard him, he swings his axe, trying to keep the goblins at bay.
:ooc: I'm staying in Defensive stance and will spend Hope to protect Bandy as necessary. In the meantime, there's goblins to chop.

Here is the Mass Combat roll:

The stout Hobbit heard the words of his friend, and while he realized his skill at sword play was not so great as he had hoped he also refused to leave the shield wall. The stories and songs that Bandy had collected in his travels had shaped his immpressions and attitudes, just as they were intended to shape the reasoning of the Woodmen as they came of age. The Hobbit took advantage of the shield that Arbogast offered to plant his sword for the last defense. Taking again the bow the Hobbit ducked and fired an arrow into the belly of the Goblin confronting him.
"here I stand Arbogast, let no one say the Shire was faithless in the sword wall among friends!"
"HARDBOTTLE AND THE SHIRE!"
[ :ooc: switching the defensive stance.

Ooc: doug I am assuming there are too many for me to use the bow, but in looking at defensive it says you can prepare a shot. I may have confused myself with residual RPG rules, I thought you couldnt use a bow in close combat, but I think what it should have been was that I can still use the bow, just not be in a rearward stance.
If that is correct can I cchange the narrative of my post, keep those results and add the skill dice for my bow? If not I'll be switiching next turn.
:ooc: I have no problem with the bow being used, but as you said - no rearward until the goblin numbers are reduced.
That said, there are enough Men-folk around now to allow me leniency on that rule. So, I guess I am cool with both. ;D
:ooc: I will be adding a Feat Die and 3d6 to the above roll.

So thats a TN23 great success for 9 endurance.
So far the men of Mountain Hall had met the goblin offensive very effectively, the day would be theirs so long as the shield wall did not falter. Though Rorin carried no shield, the deadly head of his hammer was deterrent enough to keep the goblins at bay.

Bandy's bow sang, while Rorin's axe bit deep.
Shadowed shapes surged around all, but the men of the mountain were holding fast. No longer did any seek the refuge of the bastion, as the goblins were both stopped and were now being driven back towards the hole from whence they had come.

:ooc: Okay, so the bow shot results against Esgalwen this round are:

9 +2 = 11 failed
14 +5 = 19 success for 4 Endurance loss
Esgalwen is reduced 8 Endurance
