Taking stock of the situation after retrieving his spear, Arbogast sees the surviving troll deal a heavy blow to Grimbeorn which sends the son of the skinchanger staggering.  The breath in the Woodsman's lungs is cold and harsh - mountain air, not the thick, damp air of the forest - but it lends his limbs a terrible, wrathful power as he plunges his spear toward the troll's back.

(Extraordinary Success and a Protection test, that means XP and 11 DMG?)

The Halfling saw his friend take a pounding from the troll and knew that aid would only come from his bow. The Halfling again allowed the dry fletching to kiss his cheek and then let the arrow rip. Almost as if the bow had caused it a great peel of thunder and a flash of lightning illuminated the hillside. For a moment it appeared as if the arrow itself had been part of the lightening as it slammed into the troll obviously stunning him.

:ooc: ignore the +6 on that roll - the troll failed and is dead.

Let us know how you kill him, Tom.

The arrow flew on its arched arc towards the troll, the thunder and lightening seeming to accompany it as it passed into the mouth of the troll to lodge in his throat.

The throaty bell like bellow of the troll was immediately cut short and replaced with a gurgling sound. The beast, as if dumb struck, swung his club absently to the left and then to the right in sweeping strength sapped passes, took two steps forwards, and collapsed into the mud.

Bandy watched him in his death throes and felt inside of him something of the battlelust that he had heard about in the tales of the Woodmen, and understood perhaps the bearing of his friend Grimbeorn a little better. The Hobbit suppressed the violent feeling of joy at the death of the troll and instead thought of home. In his mind passed the lees and by-ways of Hardbottle, a place not unlike the rocky rolling land they where now in. Then thoughts of Bilbo's tales entered into his thoughts, for he too had fought trolls. Fought trolls and found a treasure. Perhaps these trolls too had a hoard here about. The Hobbit thought it would be worth the time to look for a troll could not be that hard to track.

But first Grimbeorn. Bandy had to check on the wounds that his friend had sustained in the fight.

Arbogast works his legs, heavy and sluggish now that the fight is over, as fast as he can to reach Grimbeorn's side.  He did not see much of the battle, but not all of the blood now mixing with the rain is that of a troll.

Spending a Hope for bonus, helm bonus

:ooc: Quick question - with Grimbeorn's 11 counting as an  :~~: - is he wounded?  His iron cap gives him +1, and I'm guessing his Body is the remaining 6.  The original target was 14 - are there any other modifiers I'm not seeing?

If I'm right, and he's badly knocked about, I'll roll healing:
Rolled 1d12 : 4, total 4
Rolled 3d6 : 3, 3, 2, total 8

Bandy watched the FireWatcher tend to the wound of his friend. He could see that the troll had landed a solid blow against him. Once the Hobbit had asserted that the Beorning was stable and there was nothing he could do he approached the two dead trolls. They were massive in size compared to the Hobbit, and he wondered what had driven them down from the mountains.

Taking the blade from his side the Hobbit pried two massive fangs out of the trolls. They were ringed with filth, but the bone was well shaped and strong, the hobbit thought maybe he could put them to good use....

With Arbogast tending to Grimbeorn's wounds, Rorin followed Bandy over to where the trolls had fallen. The blood from the creatures was seeping out into the ground and sending black tendrils snaking down the hillside with the rain water. He watched as the hobbit cut the fangs out of the mouths of the trolls, and he thought that he saw a look of joy cross Bandy's face.

"And just what do you intend to do with those Master Hobbit?" Rorin asked, "That doesn't seem to be a very Hobbity thing to do, taking the teeth of your fallen foes."

The halfling looked up from his grisly work to see Rorin before him.

"no, master dwarf, not joy, but a notion. In my studies I read of my folk who once marched with the king. They bore bows and horns to great battle. More recently one of my own kin, the bullroarer we called him, beat back a force o goblins. It struck me just now that one of these tusks would be the right size for one such as me to make a horn from. Follow the martial traditions of my own folk, though slight and unremarked by outsiders that they are."

Bandy smiled, "Baggins burgeled a troll, but none of my folk ever killed one to my knoweledge. Perhaps all the martial stories of the wood folk are getting to me."

The hobbit wiped his hands and jumped down, "so what does your nose tell you master Rorin, where is the famous hoard of the trolls?"

:ooc: Although one hero was harmed, you guys cut these trolls down with relative ease.

I need to figure out a way in the TOR system to derive a good challenge that is a threat, but not overwhelming. I mean, it is not my goal to set you guys against impossible odds, but I want you to at least be concerned.  ;D

GREAT RP'ING! I will start a new thread shortly.

"Some of you hobbits are made of tougher stuff than one would wager! Bandobras Bracegirdle, the First Troll-Slayer! Aye, I'd drink to that! It was a fine shot indeed." Rorin tugged at his beard and laughed. "Now that's a fine question my friend, there is certain to be one close by. We ought to find a safe place to hole up for the night and tend to Grimbeorn's wounds properly, there is no sense in pushing forward in our current condition."

Rorin raised his voice to the sky and shouted, "Magrac! Come down here!" A few short minutes later his black raven friend floated down from the sky and perched on the troll's club that lay on the ground. "Greetings, I saw your trouble with the Trolls from above, how may I assist?" Rorin asked Magrac to search the area for the Trolls' cave, and check that it is unoccupied before reporting back.

As the Raven flew off Rorin addressed the rest of the company, "I've sent my friend Magrac out to search for the cave that those creatures called home, assuming that it is unoccupied, I would suggest that we stay the night there if it is close by. This rain has me soaked to the bone and I don't believe Grimbeorn should be traveling until his wounds have been properly attended to. A cave would keep us warm and dry at the very least, and there may even be provisions or treasure worth our time. What say you all?"

Grimbeorn growled.  "We can move on, I am fine," he grunted.  Pushing off any help, he attempts to stand again, balancing himself with the haft of the axe.  He gets one foot in front of another but his knees buckle not due to weight but strength as all had left him for the moment.  "Maybe not," he murmurs as he found himself once again on his back.

"That settles it. We are all tired and wet to the bone, and one of us is injured. The troll cave may be foul but it may be dry. It's also possible that where there is one cave there may be two."

Having helped Grimbeorn down to the ground with as much gentleness as can be managed, Arbogast stands, shaking the rainwater from his beard.

"Indeed.  I will see if their tracks may be followed.  Master Bandobras, would you accompany me?  I would be grateful of your steady aim if another of these creatures should prove to dwell with these two."

He then remembers, with a start, the axe that he left in Dim's brow.  He goes to retrieve it, but he could not shift it even with arms afire with the spirit of battle and it remains resolutely in place.

"Rorin," he asks, embarrassed, "would you help me?"

:ooc: Once we've taken care of the axe, I'm going to use either Hunting or Explore to find the troll cave (depending on which one Doug considers the most appropriate).

Hunting:
Rolled 1d12 : 5, total 5
Rolled 2d6 : 6, 2, total 8

Explore:
Rolled 1d12 : 2, total 2
Rolled 3d6 : 3, 1, 3, total 7

Adding another Hope point brings the Hunting roll up to 19 and Explore to 13, if necessary.

:ooc: Okay, Arbogast succeeded with the Healing test and this is what happens with Grimbeorn.

• Wound is now considered Treated.
• Endurance will be regained at a rate of 2 for each 8 hours of rest
• Weariness will disappear when current Endurance is higher than current fatigue rating

So Grimbeorn will need 12 days, each with an 8 hour rest, until he is fully recovered.

Arbogast, I will allow the Hunting roll to find the tracks that will lead you to the Troll cave.

:ooc: Well Grimbeorn isn't going to like that but he'll have to take it laying down.

Awash in pain and weakness, the young Beorning can do naught but lay there and it make him all the more mad.  Dizzy his thoughts are and the Lady Verwyne came to them unbidden before he passed out; it wouldn't be the last time he would wish he had taken her up on her request.
