Title: Jovan Station
Post by: tomcat on Sep 28, 2010, 11:20 AM
Sam searched through the spacestations open list of data messages - essentially public advertisements - looking for anything that was either elecronically encrypted, or was just strange in content. Perhaps there was something with a hidden meaning in a very plain view. The droid clicked through different key phrases and words, isolating those messages and then eliminating them each in order. There was not much to go on. The messages that were encrypted, or at least encoded, were either beyond his ability to crack, or once broken were useless information. The other isolated messages were also worthless save one. The droid brought it up on the view screen for anyone standing near to read, but he also spoke it out loud.

"Dan, so excited to hear that you were making your way out here this year. I heard you had spent a good amount of time elsewhere and even a chance to see the Core! I will be in on the 19th, so if you are still around, let's have a drink. Hopefully your ship will not have pulled out."

Dan had been one of Sam's keyword searches. The other tidbit was that the 19th was two days away.

Sallo looked at the ship's console and sighed. They had moved again while he was in hyperspace. His ship, the Talon, hung just outside of Alderaan's orbital pull. There was no reason to land the vessel on the planet below with his quarry now far away. He looked at the beacon signal and saw that it now transmitted from Jovan in the Gordian Reach. Roughly an eight-hour jump back to the Outer Rim. Still, the data he had received via his transmitter was over two-hours old, so maybe they were no longer moving. Either way he had to move now, otherwise the chase could go on too long and he knew that others sought the noblewoman.

He turned his chair to face the nav computer and began to punch in the coordinates for his next jump.

Boba Fett was the son of Jango Fett, a bounty hunter of great notoriety. Unfortunately, the young Mandalorian had watched his father die at the Battle of Geonosis by the hand of Mace Windu. That was eight years ago and Boba understood through different sources that Windu had met his own fate soon after by the traitorous Anakin Skywalker, known now as Darth Vader. There were few that knew such things anymore; the Emperor and Vader had quickly silenced most individuals that had been present then. But Boba Fett was his father's son - he had created his own network of information via his name and his growing, ruthless reputation.

In those eight years since the war started, the young man was immediately immersed in his trials by fire - from his own hunt of Windu, being sold into slavery by Aurra Sing to Darth Tyranus for the price of his father's own ship, to his many other exploits once he had escaped the Sith Lord.

The Mandalorian bounty hunter stood there in his dented and marked armor - green, grey, yellow and crimson - looking at the shadow that stood in front of him. Shade spoke, "I understand that you may have access to information that I need."

"What inforamtion is that," Fett's voice did not hide his contempt for the darkside Force-user. He had had enough of them all.

"Looking for a ship called the Aegis that played part in an assassination on Bakura," replied Shade, ignoring Boba's icy demeanor. "I understand that the ship has taken on a Commenor noblewoman that is listed on the Guild's bounties. I am not interested in the woman, just the rest of them."

Behind the Shade stood Hacks. He was wearing his old clone armor and had hoisted his blaster rifle over his right shoulder. The old soldier kept a lookout while his boss and the bounty hunter had their words. Fett looked away from the clone whom he identically resembled and back at the dark jedi, "Yes... I know of this bounty. Not my mark though, and I have no interest in it."

"Again, I am not interested if you are on the hunt... only want to know if you have a potential location for their whereabouts," Shade's voice was becoming aggrivated.

The Mandalorian helmet shook back and forth, "No."

The shadow turned and Hacks moved to follow when Boba Fett called out, "But I can get it. Give me your contact frequency and wait for my signal. The price is the noblewoman. I want her... you can have the rest."

The shaded cloak turned back towards Fett, and with a nod moved on into the busy streets of Boonta.

Kaida stood behind Sam and re-read the message over his shoulder.

"Good work," she patted his metallic shoulder briefly. "This could be coincidence, of course, but I somehow doubt it. Unless I'm missing something, this seems pretty straightforward. We go for a drink at the local cantina on the 19th, and see who shows up."

While it could still very well be a trap, Kaida was intrigued now. She wanted to know where Senator Organa's loyalties really stood. More importantly, he might have inside information on the whereabouts and status of her parents and siblings. She did not like being in the dark and craved information. He simply had to know something. But they were likely just meeting a contact anyway

She pulled out her blaster pistol, ensured that it was fully charged, and then re-holstered it. She was not going to be taking any chances. She nodded grimly, letting her low cloak drift back into place, easily concealing it from view by folds of opaque fabric.

:ooc: She'll stay close to Caden and will go to wherever this meeting takes place. If we'll have a couple of days on our own, she'll check her secure holonet area again for any messages from family.

Brim listened intently as Sam read the message to the crew. "I suggest we check out the cantina before the meeting, so we know the locale. We'll definitely need watchers in the crowd during the meeting, so we don't expose the entire group to whoever shows up, and we can see if there are any unexpected arrivals."

After a thoughtful pause, the Rodian added, "Two days is a long time to wait around here. Let's not stray too far in case we have to leave in a hurry."

Kara patted her pocket to make sure her blaster was hidden away in her concealed holster.  She then turned the corner while flipping a credit coin.  Quickly she stopped and hid away in a box of crates.  She had the feeling the group would get in trouble on the station, and this time she would be there ready when something happen... and would also show them she could be dependable... some of the time.

:ooc: Okay, wanna get you guys some info outside of game narrative. Also, Nick - who are you hiding from? Your fellow PC's or are you just slipping away from all those that might be looking?

Now to basic info:

Jovan Station - in canon, it was huge - big enough to dock 6 Star Destroyers. In our game, it will look like the picture I gave you guys in the prior thread, and is a smaller station. It is a waypoint for travelers, starships, and those that are on the fringe. This said, it is broken up into three sections:

Resort - The resort level is along the upper tiers of the station. Here is the primary location for all well-to-do, or legitimate travelers. There are restaurants, casinos, shopping malls, and hotels on this level and service is upscale and at times a premium. This said, there are establishments of different types that tailor to the rich and the poor. The center of this section is where the premium establishments are and along with this is a higher degree of civil service, police, and Imperial presence. As you go away from the center, services become cheaper, but so does the product - and contraband and illicit items are more common place.

Docks - Below the Resort portion of Jovan lies the docks. Massive docking bays and cargo warehouses circle the entire station here. Workers and travelers alike fill these bays serving many functions: Dockmasters; Maintenance service bays for vessels; Cargo brokers that buy and sell goods for transfer through Jovan; Warehouse service bays to store goods and vessels.

Civs - The Civs (short for civillians) area is where the bulk of the residents of Jovan live. Here you will find apartments, shopping areas, grocers, trade markets, service stations, and every other form of business that supports a population of people. The inhabitants are not primarily human but the ratio has grown rapidly with the takeover of the Empire and the subjugation of many non-human races.

Below the Civs is where the stations massive reactors and other operating machinery sits that keeps the station habitable. These areas are taken care of by the residents that live in the Civs that are employees of the Jovan Station management.

Docking time - The Aegis will be docked for three days minimum. It will cost:

Docking fee: 30 credits / day = 90
Refueling fee: 150 credits
Re-stocking fee: 150 credits (this number will be doubled if the party does not eat outside of the ship)

Total of 390 credits - let me know who is going to pay for it please.

If there is anything else you want to know about Jovan, let me know. Otherwise, we can go back to narratives and dialogues.

As had become almost routine, Sam scoured the public datanet for station information and assembled and analysed the mapping into a model. He compared it from level to level and tried to fill in the hidden spaces and determine where the utility shafts might lie...where one might have space to duck and hide if necessary. Caution and preparedness were traits he was quickly adopting.

:ooc: First, I have deducted the cost of the stay out of Caden's wallet - seems he has a lot of kids to feed!  ;)

Next, if any of the PC's would like to roll a Perception to Kara's Stealth roll of 16 then you will see her slip away. If not, then you do not see her go and will later just realize she is not there.

For the general public, I am going to roll -

It will depend on the level of success for me to determine how much interest is shown Kara when she slips away, but that will be stuff behind the DM screen.  ;)

To Jingo, I will keep the 14 stealth result for any future Perception tests made by an NPC.

To Zehn, you are welcome to give me a Perception test and define it (i.e. I am just keeping an eye out as we walk around) and I will use whatever the test result as a DC for anyone that tries to ambush in the near future.

Britton was definitely keeping an eye out for anything suspicious.  No more ambushes by Bounty Hunters, mysterious lightsaberists or anybody else.

Does this also count for noticing Kara slipping away?

:ooc: An 8?! No one really cares that you guys are even here.

With the local schematics downloaded into his memory, Sam disconnected from the Aegis' computer system and from there the holonet. The droid had also registered all information on local restaurants and bars. He ran an algorithm that began to exclude all the businesses that did not include certain criteria - out of the way, non-local hang out, etc. His goal was to compile a list of locations that they could check out in advance of a potential meeting with Dan's acquaintance.

Caden spoke, "All right Brim, sounds like a good idea. Let's stick together, though." He wrapped his belt and holster around his waist and then snugged his blaster into its place. Quickly strapping the base of the holster to his calf, Caden moved to the stairs that took them to the Aegis' lower deck and landing ramp.

The group stepped out into a huge landing bay. The massive entrance was open to space save for the incredibly powerful environmental shield that kept the atmosphere of Jovan station contained. They all could see out into space at the stars twinkling in the distance. Around them, the bay was bustling with activity and noise. Mechanics, droids, pilots, and travelers all milled about in directions and business that pertained to themselves. It was chilly in the hangar and it smelled of exhaust and fuel. Brim counted at least five other freighters that were berthed here along with several other smaller vessels and still the bay appeared as if it could land more.

The party crowded around, staring, until Sam and Caden began to move in the direction of the first potential meeting place - a bar called Jovan Nights. Only Kara moved in a different direction as she quickly ducked behind some crates and then when clear, went off on her own.

It took fifteen minutes and quite a bit of walking to arrive at the restaurant. The companions had to leave the section of Jovan known as the Docks, and ascend a number of levels into the Resort. Although enclosed in a space station, the area called the Resort appeared as Coruscant did with large buildings and wide avenues. Vehicles moved down streets and pedestrians strolled the sidewalks. Business storefronts flashed with neon, the smell of food and sounds of music ebbed from the local restaurants, and apartments and hotels could be seen rising throughout. Caden lost all feeling that he was in an artificial environment and felt he strolled the streets of a wonderful city at night.

With all the buildings and other superstructure came alleys and passages that disappeared into darkness. As they passed each, Sam made a careful look down each to assure they hid no dangers. He saw many different shapes with his thermal views, and each time he increased his readiness state.

Finally, turning a corner, Jovan Nights appeared. The bar/restaurant was on the corner of a busy intersection and it looked like it was four stories. Lights flashed from windows on the third level and music could be faintly heard. The lower two levels appeared to be for eating. Caden looked over his shoulder, "You guys wanna go and get a more close-up view?" The pilot was kind of hungry and thought a meal might not be a bad thing.

Kara had quickly made her way from the others once she had dashed behind the crates. She had some things she needed to do and it wouldn't help to have Caden and friends with her. She exited the landing bay where the Aegis sat and entered a large boulevard of moving maintenance vehicles and fuel bowsers. Across the busy road she saw individual maintenance bays that had crafts of different sizes being worked on. Specialized droids and mechanics worked like ants crawling under and over the vessels. Kara also was able to make out a few storage bays. She was certain that they were probably full with the space stations wares, along with that of traders and merchants. The station was a stop over point for many travelers and so trading and selling would be quite lucrative - what a great thing to be able to purchase the current fashions of Coruscant clear out here in the Outer Rim.

These places were condusive for other trades and purchases as well - kinds that did not make it in the public forum. Kara was certain that amongst the warehouse loaders, maintenance crews, or any other person that worked on the peripheree, that she would find her score. She turned to the left to follow down the boulevard and almost ran into the white, hard-shelled chest plate of a stormtrooper. The Imperial soldier spoke sternly, "Careful where you are going!"

Caden had become convinced that the best thing to do was simply to act like they belonged here. They probably weren't even the only people on the run in this station, anyway. It seemed that they could effectively hide in plain sight, which was fine with him.

"Let's eat," he said. "If nothing else, we'll get a lay of the land in there just in case."

He planned to keep an ear on the crowd inside - their credit stash was fading fast, and Caden was keen to pick up some sort of quick job that could replenish it before this... free taxi service he was running all of sudden broke him.

Kara looked at the stormtrooper and nodded.

"Sorry sir, I was just lost in thought as I was walking." she said and lowered her head and continued in the same direction she was heading while keeping her cool.

'Frack me!' She told herself. 'Why the kriffing hell are there stormies on this station.  Something stinks and it is not the second hand waste management system they are running.'

Kara breathed a sigh of relief.  She looked around for a moment and then doubled back to try and find her group.  She had a bad feeling about this station, and she wanted to watch to see if anyone was tailing her new found friends.

Sam followed them into the establishment (provided droids are allowed). He considered seeking out a droid pit, to look for some side work, but decided to wait until their situation was better established. Besides, that didn't work out too well last time.

The companions moved into the restaurant, first looking around and checking each level for any potential threats or opportunities. After they achieved a level of comfort, they sat and ate. The food was excellent and diverse. Sam watched from his position at the table as the biologicals ate and wondered at what the need for food must be like. He was certain it must be consistant with having one's inner battery charged, but still the idea of an intake of physical matter and the bilogical body breaking it down so that it could be absorbed and thus recharge itself seemed... inefficient. It was actually a weakness that Sam's inner programming mapped and then determined how best to exploit, but the droid quickly dismissed the results.

When done, they paid, thanked their server and then left. Back on the street they looked around. There was still plenty more locations to scout and the sooner they got it done, the sooner they could relax. From his position behind Kaida, Britton looked around and saw, across the street, the figure of Kara standing out of the way. She stood overwatching the restaurant and Britton realized she was keeping an eye out for any tails. He ignored her and turned the other direction, peering down the street where he saw two white-armored individuals standing post. As a soldier, he knew when a fellow soldier was on guard duty just by looking at their stance. The two stormtroopers were keeping a look around, but it was apparent that there was nothing in particular that they sought. They were just keeping the peace... hopefully.

Caden also saw the troopers and a chill ran down his spine. Was the Empire aware of their presence here? He tapped Sam on the shoulder and pointed in the opposite direction. The droid plotted a new route to the next location and they all moved off in the direction.

Kara followed along from a discreet, unassuming position.

By midnight, they had seen all there was to see within the non-high end establishments. If there was going to be a meeting, they knew it would have to be one of them. Now it was just time to wait. They had a day to do nothing and then another day to wait and see if the call came. Caden figured he'd use the time productively, as did a few others from the crew. The Imperial presence did not seem to be on the hunt for them, so they would just have to make sure they did nothing to arouse any interest.

:ooc:

Okay, the PC's have a full day to spend before the day of the meet. Then there is the length of day while waiting for a call... let me know what your PC's want to do to kill the time. Depending on the activity, we can roleplay out the time as needed. Here are some options:

Gambling at local casinos
Employment - there are a bunch of warehouses and tech shops that might take day laborers; there are traders in search of merchant vessels to move product or bring it in, etc.
Shopping - there is a huge market on Jovan of many types of items from all across the galaxy
Criminal activity - it's a big station filled with all sorts of people and thus shady dealings can be done.

Let me know.

Also, I am deducting 18 credits from all biologicals for their night out.

Boba Fett stepped back from the large Hutt sitting upon the dias. He had just made the formal greeting, showing deference to Jabba, to which the gangster nodded and actually smiled.

"Imp ohnta Boonta, Boba?" asked the Hutt. Boba responded, "The race was a bust Jabba, although I got my target."

"HA HA HA!" boomed the Hutt. "Miska pronta lowsa me cousah."

Boba nodded in thanks to his warden. Since his father's death and his escape from Dooku, Boba had found refuge within the house of Jabba the Hutt and even been given a great deal of work. It seemed that Jabba was in favor of the new colors in which Boba had painted his armor.

"I need some information, Jabba. You may be able to help." The Hutt listened intently to Boba as he queeried him regarding Varta and his dealings on Bakura. The large Hutt shook his head denying any knowledge of Varta's business, which Boba knew to be a lie, but Jabba did give an answer that would help. The translator droid spoke for him, "The great and powerful Jabba will make contact with Cradossk, leader of one of the Guilds. He owes him a favor and will certainly be able to provide you with any information on this mark."

Again Boba nodded. He bowed lower and strode from Jabba's throneroom.

It was later in the evening when the protocol droid came into Boba's chamber, "Please excuse the interruption. Jabba has sent me to inquire whether you find your accommodations satisfactory?"

"Satisfactory?" thought Boba, "They were fit for a prince... if one could be found on this dirty planet called Tatooine." His father, Jango, had done Jabba a great favor years past by removing a competitor, Gardulla the Hutt. Jabba had taken over as Boba's custodian to repay the now dead bounty hunter. To the droid he nodded, "It is quite satisfactory."

But Boba knew that Jabba would not send his droid here for mere pleasantries. He asked, "So, what has been found out?"

The droid answered, "The great and powerful Jabba has discovered that the targets in question have been acquired by a bounty hunter, Corbin Sallo. He has not reported as to where they are located, but Cradossk has informed Jabba that Sallo's ship has made heading to the space station Jovan, and is probably there by now."

"The Gordian Reach," thought Boba. "Far."

That was almost on the opposite side of the galaxy. Boba had only heard about Corbin Sallo, and what he had heard was that he was efficient. He needed to make a call. Boba excused the droid and went to his communicator, dialing in a frequency that he had been given. There was a response on the opposite end of someone connecting, but no words were spoken. Boba said two words, "Jovan Station," and the link went dead.

Fett began to gather his gear. If he was going to take this bounty, he would need to move fast. Sallo already had a substantial lead on him and there was no way Boba was going to let him take this mark.

With tasks on the ship taken care of, Sam decided to pass the day constructively. He had given what credits he had left to Caden (and the IG droid). While he did not have mundane expenses for sustenance, he felt compelled to contribute to the effort. Sam decided to ply his tech skills and searched his map for a smaller shop, off the beaten path, that might specialize in electronics or something of the sort that he was good at. He passed himself off as a ship droid between stops and offered to demonstrate his skill if needed before an offer of employ was made.

The owner of the shop on Jovan Station looked Sam up and down. He was impressed with the droid's skills, but he was concerned about the fact that Sam was built on a B2 chasis and that he was completely independent. The mech had never dealt with droids in this capacity. Still he had work to get done and another set of competent hands would help.

"All right... you certainly have the programming for a mech, although you don't look like it. You got the job. I will pay 60 credits per hour for all work that is done efficiently. I have ten sub-light drives that are backed up and need diagnosed and repaired. You help me get through them all and there will be a bonus in it for ya!"

The repair shop owner waited for Sam's answer.

Caden was having a hard time trying to find the same companionship that he had with Kex. It wasn't that any of his companions were not likeable or trustworthy, they just were all still... new. Kara was the most efficient pilot he had had aboard the Aegis in a long time, but she was sore spot due to her vices, and Caden oftened wondered at her intent. Brim was getting close, but all the Bestinian knew of him was that he was running from the Empire. Kaida and Britton were off on their own, and Sam was a droid. He didn't mind that he was a droid, but how much human companionship came from that?

Now the man stood in a dingy office waiting for the amount he would be paid if he hauled the starship parts across the galaxy. In his heart, Caden knew the stuff was hot, even though the trader insisted that it was all legit. But Caden had to go to low end dealers and merchants due to his ship no longer having a dependable license - at least one that he felt comfortable giving to a merchant who was tied to the B.O.S.S.

"All right... let's see.... I have a total of 20 tons and you can handle 25." The toydarian tapped his clawed finger on the counter. "I will give you 400 credits per ton payable to your account upon delivery. Understand that that amount is for no loss or discovery." The trader lifted an eyebrow and eyed Caden.

This was it. He was about to immerse himself in contraband.... illegal activities. Was it worth 8,000 credits? He wished Kex were here to help him with the decisions.

:ooc: Don, I will post again as soon as I am home with my books for the tests I need you to roll.

Brim rounded the corner and stood looking into the dingy alleyway, one of many aboard Jovan station. Something had drawn him to this particular alleyway though. He knew that within it's shadowed length lay his destiny. He was prepared to face Whatever was there.

The Rodian walked lightly into the shadows, alert for any other presence. He almost missed it, but at the last second he caught the movement to his left, along with the snap-hiss and red glow of the lightsaber. It slashed low, impossibly fast, and Brim's own green blade was ignited just in time to block a blow that would have severed his leg. His attacker's blade was close enough to sear his clothing and the skin beneath, however, before Brim pushed back and regained his balance, biting back the pain from the near hit.

His attacker laughed, taunting him. "I see you have learned, padawan, but it will not be enough." In the glow of the blades, Brim saw that it was the cloaked Jedi, the one who had murdered his friend Dan. The Rodian was filled with rage, and launched a frantic attack spinning high, then low. He was fast, but the cloaked Jedi was faster. Every attack was parried effortlessly, and all the while the laughter continued.

They ended up face to face, their blades crackling with energy as they pressed against each other. Brim saw only hatred and evil in the face of his enemy, and he returned a look of determined resolve. The dark Jedi's laugh changed suddenly to a vicious snarl, as he prepared to finish off the Rodian with a final, devastating attack.

But Brim knew something the dark Jedi did not. He feinted when his enemy thrust, falling backwards and dropping low to the ground. He twisted his green blade out of the way of the attack, allowing the red blade to slide into the duracrete surface of the alleyway. As he twisted, the Rodian activated the second blade from the opposite end of the grip, slicing sideways into the abdomen of the dark Jedi. The enemy, wide eyed with surprise, let out a final hiss of breath before slumping to the ground.

***

Brim blinked and the familiar surroundings of the Aegis' cargo hold returned. While he did not sweat as humans did, he felt the fatigue from  the workout throughout his body. He stared at the length of pipe he had been practicing with. Today had been different. The images in his mind had been so detailed. The lightsaber ... his lightsaber, had felt so real in his hands. Some day he would make this device. He knew the ability was within him.

The Rodian replaced the pipe onto the stack of spare parts, perhaps with more reverence than was really necessary, then returned to his quarters to meditate.

:ooc: Nice post Brian.  ;D

Don, I adjusted the rate of hourly pay to be more consumate with the job generator in the Scum and Villainy book... problem is, Sam knows the going rate for mechs is about 100-120 an hour. The store owner is cutting the wage probably because Sam is a droid. If you accept the work, here is how it will go:

There are 10 engines that need repaired (in HP's) of the following amounts - 12, 15, 10, 7, 8, 6, 11, 5, 4, 3

Each hour a Mech roll may be made at DC 20. Each success will give the following results based on degree of success:

Dice result range:
10 - will be a catastrophic failure causing the engine an additional 1d6 in damage... will receive no pay
15 - will be a disastrous failure causing the engine an additional 1d4 in damage... will receive no pay
19 - will be a failure but no additional damage to engine but hour used... may receive no pay
20 - Success, hour spent and 1d8 in HP's may be applied to engines (meaning if you roll 4 on d8, you could repair engine 9 completely; repair engine 10 and then apply the remaining 1 point to another engine; or apply all 4 points to an engine with higher damage, etc.)
25 - Superior Success hour spent and 2d6 in HP's may be applied to engines
30 - Extraordinary success half an hour spent and 2d8 in HP's may be applied to engines

Sam can work for however many hours he wants - the owner will not close the shop. If Sam can repair all the engines in 10 hours, he will recieve double his hourly rate plus 200 credits.

Sam was happy for the work. This was the Outer Rim and a back alley store, but he knew he was still be taken advantage of. It had been some time since he worked, though, and the owner seemed honest enough. Not many would give his kind a break. He was just a reminder of the oppression that existed before the Empire. He would prove his worth and then look for more.

"I accept your terms of an apprentice wage. If my skill proves valuable to you, we can discuss details of continued employment. I think when you see my results, you will not want me going to one of your competitors." Sam certainly hoped these weren't famous last words. Hyperdrive engines were somewhat related to the power generators he cut his teeth on and besides it's not like it was...well, yes...it really was rocket science.

:ooc: I'll trust my fate to the die roller. 10 rolls that I'll take in sequence and apply the results in the next post to see how far I get. (I'd almost prefer 2d6's here as opposed to a d20!)

:ooc: I am not trying to force a plot here, but posting is scant for my games - Don and I are keeping things going. Anyway, I am going to RP a couple characters here to move on the game. As usual, if I take your PC in a direction that you would not prefer, let me know.

In the end, for Caden, it came down to money. Honor and scruples be damned! With the recent battles his ship had been through and those likely to come, it would soon be a situation where the Aegis would need repairs - real repairs, and that cost real money.

He eyed the toydarian. The run was easy. Yea, he would be taking some off the beaten tracks to avoid any Imperial interests, but they should be okay. It should be quick. Still, the price wasn't enough and he figured if he was going to be putting his feet into this world, he needed to make the appropriate demands. "8,000 credits? Are you crazy? I'll do it for 12, and I want half down as a guarantee of payment."

Caden did not smile as the trader became flustered. "Wha?? 12,000 credits? It is you who are the one who is crazy. Go then."

"Look... you want the shipment to get through, right? Who are you going to trust more? Some fat merchant ship that pirates will take a bite out of the first chance they get, or my ship? It's fast and well armed. I may not have a big cargo cap, but I can protect the merchandise I move!" The Bestinian stared at the trader, who rubbed his three-fingered hand on his bristley chin.

"10," was the new offered price. "And I will give you 3,000 down."

Caden smiled to himself, "Done. We are in docking bay 12D. Move the merchandise to us and my crew will commence loading."

There was a nod of the head, and Caden was done here. He figured he would take the rest of the afternoon to relax. There were stormies on this station, but for the most part, it seemed they finally had found a place to disappear. Not far from him, watching as he exited the bay, Kara smiled to herself. She heard the wheeling and dealing and thought that Caden just moved up a notch on her belt.

Sam finished his work well after most other businesses had closed. He shoved the last sub-light drive back into its storage bay, the massive engine suspended by huge chains that were attached to the ceiling via a roller. It was so well balanced and lubricated that one person could easily turn, and push the starship engines about. The chains rattled and the ball bearings that allowed it to roll down the ceiling track squeeked, but the engine was diagnosed, repaired and now put away. In fact, this was number ten.

The shop owner came out of his office, rubbing a towel over his sweaty, balding head. He smiled at Sam, "You do good work." The tech gestured to the datapad in his hand that showed ten bays full with positive readings from the engines. "Come on in and get your pay."

Sam followed him into the office and reached inside his storage compartment, bringing out his credit chip. The shop owner slid it into a register and pushed a couple buttons. "Okay... that is ten hours at 60 creds per hour... and the bonus I promised." The droid's credit chip slid out of the machine with an 800 credit balance. "If you are here for long, let me know... I can use you for more work."

The crew of the Aegis all were back on board by the end of the Jovan day. All were tired from their activities and the stress that each held within. Tomorrow was the day that they hoped something would happen. Hopefully they might soon have answers and maybe even liberation. The ship was secured for the night and everyone bedded down.

In the morning, they awoke to Sam activating the holonet transceiver and running a playback - "Dan... hadn't heard from you. I hope you didn't have to leave Jovan already. I will be dockside by noon and would love to meet for lunch at the Zilla Café. It is a nice little place in the Resorts that won't break our wallet. I will be there no matter what, so show up if you don't hear from me. It'll be great to see you!"

"Your cargo's safe with me," Caden said with a smirk that covered more than it revealed. "But... making sure I'm delivering 20 tons, undiscovered? That can be arranged - but it's not easy."

Caden sidled up to the Toydarian, trying hard to not to wrinkle his nose at the smell, and spoke in a friendly tone.
"I'll make that happen, and I won't insult you by trying to raise the price - but I need 4,000 of those credits up front. You can pay me the other half on delivery."

He put his arm around the Toydarian's shoulder in a conspiratorial fashion. Caden wanted him to know that he knew what they were really doing.
"And then you'll never have to see me again - just two gentlemen conducting private business."

:ooc: Ha! Looks like you and I were writing our posts at the exact same time - but you beat me to the button.

Sallo checked the time. It was almost noon.

His ship, the Talon, had come to rest the evening before in docking port 21A. The bounty hunter logged into the holonet, and the Jovan communication net, and let his computer collect data. He then had bedded down, deciding to continue his search in the morning.

When he woke, he donned his armor and prepared his gear. Once done, Sallo went to the computer console to see if any information had been found with his key word searches. There was a little, but nothing pertinent to the now and nothing directly on the Jovan net. He shook his head to see that information on ship manifests was either confidential, or to general to go into great details. No Loronar explorers were listed publicly as being docked here, along with no ship names of the Aegis. The latter did not surprise him - he would have lost any form of respect for the ship's captain if he had been foolish enough not to change the ship's name.

Due to the massive metal structure of Jovan, and its intricate communications net, the whole mass blurred out the transponder signal that he had placed on the Aegis. So that was no longer an option to find them either, save to tell him that the Loronar had not left the station.

Now Corbin moved through the busy passages of Jovan's docks, going from one port to the next, trying to physically find which berth held the Aegis. He looked over his head and saw the port ID number - 11A-T. It was getting tiring and time consuming. There had to be a better way. The bounty hunter realized he still had another 10 ports with 20 berths each to go!

The companions studied the building that flashed the sign Zilla's Cafe. It was a quiet little restaurant, non-pretentious, and easily affordable to most ilk that might live, or travel through, Jovan. It was one of the places that they had passed the night before but had given little heed too, due to its simple style. Zilla's was quaint and open with a patio area for eating outside, and large windows that opened into the restaurant itself. This made for a bright room. The atmosphere within the restaurant was not flashy, but neither did it accommodate the quiet group looking to go unnoticed.

The hour was fast approaching noon. They either needed to break from their discreet location across the street and enter the restaurant, or forget it all and go. In either case, the ultimate uncertainty still lay within the message - was it even meant for them?

:ooc: Would love to know what you guys wanna do. I feel like I am steering the show. Character interaction would help, too.

Sam said he would keep watch from a nearby restaurant. If they were being followed, he would stick out like a sore thumb. If anyone tried to take him out...well he configured his backup up processor to ping a message to Caden should his main power cut out. He would watch the entrance for anything suspicious.

"Well, we might as well see who was waiting for Dan," Caden offered. At the very least, he could break the news of Qinos' death and offer to continue his work, which may endear them to... whomever this was.

He wanted to talk to Senator Organa soon, but perhaps finding out what they could here might make that meeting even more productive.

"Let's be smart here," he suggested, knowing that Sam had his back from across the street. "When I picked up Dan, only Kex and Sam were with me, and now Kex is gone, too."
He said the latter with a tinge of sadness, but he knew this wasn't the time, lest he join his departed friend. He had to stay focused.

"It's possible that whoever this is will know who I am, then, and not get spooked off by seeing me. I can meet him 'alone', but anyone who's coming with - I'd sure appreciate a little cover if you don't mind spreading around the cafe to watch all the angles. Figure that the less that contact knows about us, the better position we'll be in."

"Agreed," Kaida nodded to Caden. It was a good plan. "I'll go in with you, but will sit at a different table, keeping an eye out. If anything happens I'll be there to watch your back. I'll get a table where I can both watch you and the entrance and windows."

:ooc: Kaida will wait five minutes and then go in. She'll find Caden's position and then request a table that put her in view of the entrance / windows but also provides overwatch of Caden. She'll do a Persuade if needed to request the appropriate table.

Caden broke from the group and walked across the street. He entered the small courtyard where patrons were already beginning to fill up tables in small groups of two or four. The Bestinian looked around trying to observe as many people as he could, but trying not to make eye contact. He passed through the doors and made his way to a table in Zilla's main dining room. Caden saw Kara enter from an opposite entrance and take a seat at a long bar. A few minutes later, Britton and Kaida entered the outside patio and took a table there, leaving Brim to come in by himself a litte while later. Of all of his friends, it was Brim who grabbed the most attention from the diners in Zilla's Cafe, but he was soon forgotten as everyone returned to their own business.

Sam stood sentry not far from where they had all separated. His tactical programming was tagging each individual inside and outside of the restaurant, assigning threat levels and determining kill percentages based on range and current conditions. The droid ignored most of the data that was being produced, but still appreciated the fact that if something did happen, he could kill almost 75% of his targets from his position within the first minute of conflict. All the while that he assessed the situation within the confines of Zilla's the droid also monitored all pedestrians that walked past the restaurant, again prosecuting them for threats.

The lunch hour passed.

Zilla's began to empty as the patrons completed their meals and returned to business of the day. Around the companions, the restaurant staff commenced the evident preparations for the dinner time rush, working around them all as they did. Caden made eye contact with his friends around him and each gave the same befuddled look. No one had approached him. No message or contact was made. No strange calls came to the restaurant seeking someone named Dan. Caden shook his head. It was a bust and an absolute waste of time. Throwing a couple credits on the table, he stood up and with a nod to those who could see him, left the restaurant. Sam tracked in on him as he left and kept careful watch of him as he crossed the street back to where they had all originally started. The droid moved out of his position and joined Caden. A few minutes later, the rest of the companions were also present.

Sam reported only the normal activity outside of the restaurant while the rest waited it out inside. Nothing out of the ordinary. No suspicious contacts. He internally linked to the datanet to see if any messages had come through. He noticed his sentient companions seemed anxious. As they gathered together as a group once more, Sam picked up his scanning to see if anyone marked them assembling again.

"Not entirely," Caden said, not yet interested in explaining why until his cargo was in their hold.
"Besides, we may still meet Senator Organa... and I'm not sure that Dan's contact's given up. He or she may just be re-assessing his options, given that Dan wasn't there, and I was."

Caden looked around, from corner to corner across the busy thoroughfare.

"In fact, whoever it is might be watching us right now - that's what I would do - and noticing that we're all together. No need to give up just yet."
He clapped Britton on the shoulder and motioned toward the docks.

"Let's get back to the ship - at least the money part might be on its way to a temporary solution there as we speak."

"I just hope this whole thing isn't some elaborate setup," Kaida frowned as she detached herself from Britton, keeping a wary eye out.

She followed Caden back to the starship, scanning the streets and buildings for any sign of danger. Maybe their information was compromised and this just a ruse to get them all together, to get a count of the Aegis's crew, to get them out in the open, away from the relative security of the ship.

She kept her hands free and ready to draw her blaster if needed, but outwardly trying to appear nonchalant and carefree.

:ooc: Very cool! Characters talking to one another... Tommy likey!

The companions turned their course back towards the Aegis. Some were frustrated, but Caden's good mood seemed to temper most. Everyone wondered at what he might be talking about, but assumed that the man had created some new work for them, and by his mood must be of real value.

They took a set of stairs down that switch-backed through four tiers of landings and finally deposited them on a busy road on the Docks. There were nice elevators and escalators in the center of the Resort level that would have been less laborious, but Caden felt the need to be more inconspicuous. Across the street from where they stood was a mammoth repair shop within which sat a well used YT-1300. Sparks spattered from her outside hull as a technician welded on a new patch. There was a group of at least seven non-humans milling about discussing the ship. Brim noticed one of his own kind standing in the center of the group his finger outstretched and pointing at a human male shop owner. The conversation could not be heard.

On their side of the street was a long row of storage units. Some had their doors open and interiors exposed, but most were closed and secured. Between every third or fourth unit was a thin alley or mechanic access passage. The group made their way down the street in the direction they needed to go, passing other pedestrians as they went. They made a right turn, then a left, but then stopped when they saw a massive celing conduit that sagged from its coupling. Electricity sparked and flared above, all the while station workers and repairmen set about re-directing traffic and pedestrians and a repair lift was risen into place.

The companions could see the entrance to their docking bay not twenty yards beyond the blown out conduit, and some cursed that they'd now need to make the long way around. Sam eyed the damage and wondered what could have happened. They turned around to head back and immediately noticed the figure standing there in the long, hooded cloak.

Sallo stood across the bay looking at the Aegis. He knew it was the ship he was looking for. He also could tell that the vessel was vacant for no one had exited recently to speak with the freight handler that had just deposited what looked to be at least twenty-plus tons of merchandise.

He made his way to the dockmaster's shack and a few credits passed made it so that he had the freight manifests in his hand. He looked down the list and saw no listing for the Aegis' cargo - that meant it was not moving through legal channels. The Duros dockmaster took back the manifest, as Corbin queeried, "So, where is that merchandise going?"

The dockmaster looked, "What merchandise?" Sallo dropped another twenty credits on the counter, which disappeared in the Duros long fingers. "Oh, that cargo. It is being moved to Taris."

"Thanks," said the bounty hunter. He turned, walked out of the office and looked around the large hangar bay. Jovan was not an Imperial hot spot, although he had seen a few of the stormtrooper contingent that was stationed here, but still he did not want to have the same thing happen as did on Cloud City. This time he wanted a quick, easy grab and then be on his way. If he made his attempt here, near the Aegis, his mark might have another chance to get away. No... he needed to track them on the streets here and do it quick and quiet.

Sallo walked back towards the Aegis and then moved to find a nice quiet place to hide, and watch.

Sam immediately scanned the figure as best he could and discerned no visible threat. He just looked too interested in them. Friend or foe, he couldn't say, but he was getting tired of looking over his shoulders. Sam plotted the quickest, most public alternate route to the docking bay and sent it to Caden's communicator. Staying in the open may be to their advantage, especially with the Imperial presence. He kept his vocalizer low, "Britton, remain with me. We will tail the group and see what this being wants. Very visibly. I tire of running. Let's let them know they are being watched."

Kaida glanced at the sparking electrical conduit that blocked their route to safety, and then eyed the hooded figure watching them. "Caden," she said softly, "do you believe in coincidences?"

She wondered. Was this another bounty hunter or could it be their contact, or something else entirely?

"In this instance, you can believe in coincidence," replied the hooded figure, surprising Kaida that her soft spoken words were heard. "But your actions thus far today would allow for little else. If you were trying to be discreet in your movement, it was not attained."

The companions sized up the man - just over six feet, with broad shoulders framing a slender, but athletic, body. The cloak was draped over his face in the style of the Jedi, although the clothing were not of the same loose-fitting type that the Jedi were known for. No weapons were evident either in a holster, or aimed at them. The latter fact brought a bit of relief to the young noblewoman.

The figure spoke again, "You will follow me."

The statement came with no option in its inflection. To add credence to what he said, the figure turned from the group and began to walk back the way they had come.

:ooc: do you follow?

The figure spoke again, "You will follow me."

"Yeah? Well, we're a bit busy right now, and time is money," Caden replied with a smile, as coolly as possible. "So unless you've got a better explanation than that, thanks, but we've got better things to do."

His hand slid toward his blaster, obvious enough that the hooded man could see it, but not so aggressively as to be provocative - Caden was posturing.
He was hoping that this was Dan's - their - contact.

Sam held back as the group approached the figure (with Brit if he acquiesced to his request). He kept a clear line of sight to the figure as he talked with Caden and also scanned the crowd around them.  Had anyone else taken interest in their group or the figure? Did he have a retinue spread out in the crowd?  Sam found himself desperately hoping something good would come out of this.

Kaida stepped forward. If the man had wanted to harm them would he have acted already? Or was he leading them into a neater, perhaps quieter, trap? She had been on the run from the Empire and its agents for so long she mistrusted everything.

Wanting to judge the man's intent and to cool any hot heads and quick hands from turning the situation into something it perhaps shouldn't be, she moderated her voice, and moved after the man, speaking so any passersby could not hear.

"First, sir, tell us who you are, who you work for, and why we should follow you?"

:ooc: She wants to use her persuade to get more information and to diffuse the situation.

Kara was too busy staring at the drink menu to notice the figure had showed up, she noticed that the list of ales was rather sparse and made a mental note to try and find a better bar to drink at if she had the chance to later.

:ooc:

I figure Kara rolled so low on perception, she deserves to not notice anything...

Brim stared at the cloaked figure, a blank facial expression masking the his concentration. Was this another dark Jedi? Would I even be able to tell?

Britton wasn't waiting for anyone else to start shooting before drawing his gun.  He brought out his blaster but held it at his side.

I need to make an opposed roll here - nice roll, by the way Brian! The opposed roll can only be successful with a nat 20 of my own, so let's see:

The figure heard Caden's answer and halted. He turned back to face him, only the end of the nose showing from the hood and a shadowed mouth and chin. There was a cynical smile on the face, "You have better things to do? I hope that racing to far away places isn't what you do to fill your time... unless of course this is the best option you now have? Then I shall leave you to it."

The cloaked figure turned away again with no other word, apparently unconcerned now if the companions did follow. Brim reached out with the senses that he was newly discovering and felt the man's presence within the Force, and there was no evil within him - although the Rodian did feel urgency and even some pain. That was when Kaida spoke, which caused the man to stop once more.

Maybe it was something in her voice, or maybe he could feel her concerns. In any case, he turned once more. "The streets of Jovan, though busy, are no place to conduct business - at least of a sort - and the way you have all huddled together since your arrival, if anyone is watching you, then you are certainly marked. After all... I marked you. And if you want some answers, then I bid you to follow. If not, then the space lanes are open to you." He finished by extending an arm in the direction that he was heading, as if to offer them to proceed, "My name is Ulric."

Kaida nodded, grateful for some information at least. "Thank you, I for one, am interested in knowing what sort of business it is you offer. I will come." She swept her gaze once around to her companions and then stepped in line behind the cloaked man.

This must be Organa's contact, she reasoned within herself. She desperately wanted to meet the senator, especially since she believed--or at least hoped--he had some information on the whereabouts of their family.

"Well I'm not letting her go by herself," Britton said, holstering (but not taking his hand off of) his blaster.  He stepped up with Kaida.

Caden relaxed a bit. "Y'know, you could have just said that up front," he said, a bit sheepishly.

Sam relaxed a bit and rejoined the group. 'Ulric' Doubtful anything would show up on the public networks Sam could access on the move, but he started a scan in any case.

Kara looked around the bar and realized she had lost the rest of the crew.  She cursed herself for a moment, and then called the bartender.

"Did you see where the group that was in the booth over there headed?" she asked.

:ooc: No one was in a booth - everyone was equally spread out around the restaurant with Sam across the street. So, the bartender has no idea who Kara might be talking about. Just pick up on the new thread like Kara had left the cafe when everyone else did.
