Inside and outside, the steading is filled with the chaos and clangour of battle. The woman that Beorn saw emerge from behind the pillar looks around her and, seeing perhaps a space between the warriors and orcs, runs weeping for the door. It is by no means certain that she will make it before an alert orc, or even a stray blow, fells her.
Outside, the goblins hiss at the sunlight, but the sun itself is dipping below their homes in the Misty Mountains, and they seem determined to fight rather than flee. They surround the newly-arrived Beornings, pulling a man from his horse and going to work with crude, evil-looking knives.
Hathcyn Longspear sprung from the saddle with mobility of youth, the horse quickly forgotten. The men of the river basin were not know for their horsemanship or going to war upon beasts if burden. The northman swung his spear in a wide arc to give himself room and then gripped the polearm in both hands and squared off against his foe.
:ooc: let's call this an open stance to start with and test out this new guy.

Paul, as a side note, would the spear be able to provide any type of parry bonus?
:ooc: Piercing blow.
The stench of the foul curr's brew dripped from him and the great Beorning was undeterred in his wrath.

Hathcyn's spear makes a loud whooshing noise as he swings it in a broad arc. Spitting and scrabbling, the goblins fall back from him. One is too late, and the shaft connects with the side of its head with a loud thwack. The goblin's knees buckle and it drops to the ground, insensible. Behind him, someone cheers, but the cry is a short one - the business of the evening is far from done.
:ooc: Another protection roll for the chieftain:
:00: 1d12 : 3, total 3
Rolled 3d6 : 2, 3, 5, total 10
The chieftain raises his shield high to block an overhand strike, but Grimbeorn has beaten through better defences than this in his time. Bear Claw crashes down on his foe, shivering the shield and driving onwards into the chieftain's skull. All shattered in the head, the mighty orc falls.
Amid the swirling melee within and without the longhouse, there is no time for Men or orcs to take note of the fallen. Blades continue to flash in the half-light.

Swift as he is, Hathcyn is unable to prevent a goblin ducking beneath his spear-tip and rushing him, closing to a distance where his spear is useless. Screaming unintelligibly, it slashes at his legs and belly.
:ooc: Hathcyn takes three :dmg: and requires a Protection roll:
:00: 1d12 : 6, total 6

:ooc: That will be a wound unless you want to spend Hope or a bonus die.

:ooc: Still one short! I'll let you decide whether to spend Hope.
Hope is too precious to thing to be dropping all willy-nilly I'll take the hit for now
