Title: Forest Encounter - Round 3
Post by: tomcat on Jun 11, 2008, 10:10 AM
[Text from end of previous thread:]

Spindel could not believe in her malignant thoughts the trap she had dropped herself into, and as her life started to leave her - with every smashing blow - she hissed out her hatred at all living things. and then moved no more.

Nori pulled off the remaining tendrils of web from his beard and hair, standing as he did. The trio looked at the ruined remains of the giant spider then quickly looked out to the darkness of the forest, wondering if she were the only one. They heard nothing, except of course, their companions struggling with the large hill troll a short distance away.

"OOWW!" yelled Gar as the weapons began to strike him and slash through his tough old hide. He had just wanted the ponies, not to get into a fight that might cost him his old life. "Stop it!" he pleaded to the company.

Situation: The Company is suddenly awakened by the approach of two fell-creatures - Old Gar and Spindel - each with its own intent.

Situational Modifiers: Dim Lighting (-2 test modifier) will affect all outside the yellow ring (map shows extent of lighting); Turumarth's spell has granted all characters a +2 bonus to all tests for the spell duration.

Both creatures are standard hit points and wound levels, and their defenses are:

Troll = 10 [Size = Large, Defence is reduced by 2 for each level smaller than Large]

Physical Modifiers: Weariness penalties as follows (forgot these in round 1, but no biggie): Gumbo and Vári are -1 Winded; Beren, Kori, Turumarth are -2 Tired. Gar is Dazed (no effect).

Initiative:
Gumbo - 12
Caranmîr - 12
Old Gar - 11
Turumarth - 9
Beren - 7
Kori - 7
Vari - 6
Nori -

[OOC:] This is Telcontar's round three post that was in the round 2 thread... I just moved it here.

Gumbo jerked the sword free and again thought about his lovely spear that was of no use at this moment in time.

Caranmîr looked at the corpse of the Giant Spider. He and his company had just claimed the life of a beast. This was a new sensation for the Elf, but there was no time to waste, the other members of the Company still had a fight on their hands. Pulling away from the carcass, making sure that everything was alright with the two Dwarves, Caranmîr turns and makes his way to Beren and the Hill Troll.

[OOC: Does Caranmîr hear the Troll's plea for 'help'?]

[OOC:] Yea, the whole party would hear Gar's booming voice.

Vári turned away from the spider's shell and started to run towards the rest of his Company.
"Then ye'd better find your meal someplace else, troll," he shouted as he ran, "because this morsel will bite ye back!"

Beren was just about to strike, but than he thinks better of it.  He can't strike a "worthy" foe if they were pleading for mercy.  It just didn't feel right to him.  He still has his sword up when he says, "Troll, why would our company spare you?  For you would have probably killed us in our sleep, even if we were pleading."  You have to remember, Beren has never met a troll or their treachery.

Turumarth relaxes his grip on his staff for a moment. A bead of sweat runs into his eye even in the cool night air. Upon hearing the troll's plea he runs past the fire to stand amongst the ponies. Holding up he stands ready with staff, not wanting to distract those closer with shouted words.

[OOC:] Covering the distance to the Troll takes one action.

Gar attempts to parry Gumbo:

Action 1 - Roll(2d6)+9: 3,2,+9 Total:14 SUCCESS
Action 2 - Roll(2d6)+9: 1,3,+9 Total:13 FAILED [Gar takes 6 -2 thick skin = 4]

Gar's taken 43 hit points total (18 per level)

As the Company begins to surround the old troll, he realizes that the ponies may cost him a lot more than he intended. The man with the long sword yelled out and Gar turned to look at him, "Gar only wanted da ponies. Let you and dwarfes sleep. Fat ole spider woke you all up and ole Gar missed his meal!"

All the companions' weapons were displayed before him, and some had already cut. The one Dwarf was right, they did bite back. The old troll was sure he could take one with him, but not all of them and not before they hurt him even more. "You let ole Gar go home... he give you gold... jewels... fancy blades? Just don't stick him anymore with yer sharp swords and axes!"

Gumbo's sword was cocked back after having struck the troll. He heard the words, they carried the possibility of riches. In some higher mental state he realized that maybe they could extort the troll for some riches, or coin, or information. The scars upon his body burned, and even if the troll cowed to them it would devour and leave helpless those less fortunate. Gumbo thought to himself, the die is cast, the battle and oath uttered......
"Baruk Kuzud!"

OOC: If the troll uses his action to parley Gumbo uses his swift strike ability to make another attack.

Once Caranmîr comes into range, he speaks in strong sindarin words to the Hobbit. "Gumbo, stand down." Caranmîr concentrates and decides to work some subtle magic, in order to have the Troll drop his weapon.

As the Troll drops his club, Caranmîr adds smiling:

"You shall not attack an unarmed foe."

With that Caranmîr brings his Quarterstaff in between the two combatants.

[OOC: Reason for modifying the post: The first paragraph wasn't in Green but in yellow. And added the 'Quarterstaff' bit. Sorry for that...]

"Bah!" Vári held his position, but he made his feelings clear.
"Don't be listenin' to this prattle," he said. "Gold? Jewels? Follow 'im to 'em and you'll walk right into a trap. And if he says he'll bring the treasure, he might... with two or three friends in tow. To 'help carry it', no doubt!"

Beren looks sharp at the troll.  "I will have nothing to do with killing an unarmed foe", he says.  He then tries to see if what the troll had said was the truth, or as Vari said, was lies.

OOC: What's the initiatve order on this? The elf is to far away to cast a spell and come between Gumbo and the troll with his staff. Club or no Club I'm swining at the troll. If the trolls action is to speak then I'm using my extra action point from Swift Strike to attack as rolled.

[OOC:] Hey Telcontar, in terms of initiative for where we are - both you and Caranmir had a 12. You attacked and did damage, and are poised to attack again - I have the roll above. Caranmir, who also had a 12 initiative is right on the money with his move (1 action) to get over to where you guys are, and cast the spell (1 action)... so, realistically he could be in position between you - but I will allow you guys an opposed Nimbleness test (no action cost, and Courage can be spent on it) to see if he can stop you, or your attack goes through.

More to come in a bit...

Caranmîr's Opposed Nimbleness Check:

2d6 + 2 (Nim) + 2 (spell effect) --> 2d6 + 4

Roll(2d6)+4:
3,1,+4
Total:8 --> Gumbo wins.

The Elf was startled by the hatred and the ferocity in the voice of Gumbo. Without noticing, Caranmîr's Staff, that he had tried to position between the two fighters, came down. Somewhat petrified, Caranmîr withdraws a step and waits to see how the situation is going to develope and how the others are going to react.

Initiative roll for Round 4:

2d6 + 2 (Nim) [+2 spell effect?]

Roll(2d6)+2:
2,1,+2

Total:5 [+2 spell effect, if spell actually effects Initiative]

[OOC: That result is more than fitting for Caranmîr's state of mind :)
Edit: Added colour.]

The Company was becoming divided in their stance. The troll was now defenseless, his weapon some feet away, due to the Elf's magic.

Gold... and jewels! Kori looked around at those who spoke, and for him, the words of Vári rang true. But what if the treasures could be obtained without the troll's participation? Then came the battle call from Gumbo, who charged in and slashed at the old creature. It lit the inner fire within the old craftsman and he hoisted his axe to follow the charge.

"For all the blood of my kin, spilled by these wretched creatures! Baruk Khazad!"

There was no way for Gar to defend himself and so the weapons struck true.

[OOC:] First, let me say that I love the addition of the languages to the story. But though I deem myself a knowledged Tolkien-ite, I am not up to speed on the languages. I would love if you guys would put the translations in as well, down below your narrative, in an OOC or other format.

Kori attacks Gar:

Gar takes 20 +11 damage (from Kori and Gumbo) -6 for thick skin = 25. Total 68 points (18 per level) - Injured -1 (Hardy)

Vári stayed his hand. Though he certainly did not trust the troll one bit, he thought the creatures to be more stupid than malicious, unlike Orcs and their ilk. As long as Old Gar was unarmed, Vári would not strike him; he would not relinquish his honor so.

Nevertheless, he would neither intercede on the troll's behalf nor pass judgment against those who would move against it. He thought that, given the opportunity, the troll would devour them all, so it was not sympathy that he felt for Old Gar; it was simply that he wished to sleep well at night, without regrets.

Vári stood at the ready and watched, knowing that in the next few moments, he would learn much about the folk with whom he'd allied himself.

[OOC: Sorry about taking so long to jump in tomcat]

The sounds of the battle persisted out across the dark forest, and happened to wake a hunter resting near the edge of the road a little to the east. Until this point he was completely unaware of the company. Debating with himself for a moment, he decided to run and see what was happening, and who was fighting.

OOC: Nori will take last initiative this round

The young dwarf is the last to join his companions, hearing the troll's plea.  "He may yet have heirlooms of our people; to recover them would be a worthy trade for his life as well as some information we could use too."  He hefted his own family heirloom to his shoulder but still ready for a fight.
