As they fought, the gloom around the river clung tightly to them all and an early morning mist was rising. It was making the battle field a greater challenge with each combatant struggling to tell friend from foe.
But even in the thick gloom, Esgalwen and Hathcyn both were distracted as something quickly moved through the reeds along the embanked river's edge. It was small and it raced rapidly on all fours, though it was mannish in shape. Esgalwen's first thought was that of Bandy, or even Udo who had lived near this place - Hobbits! But no, this thing was wretched of shape and both were sure that it hissed in its efforts to escape the scene.
The feet of Men and orcs tread the riverside earth into a slippery morass, though the orcs seem little troubled. Staggering under the force of an unexpected blow, Arbogast is forced to one knee as the orc continues hammering sword on shield. But even the endurance and bloodlust of orcs is not limitless, and the Fire-watcher is able to take advantage of a momentary lapse in the onslaught to regain his footing, be it ever so unsteady.
Raising the Warden's Axe high, he cries out "courage, Men of the North! Do not falter, brothers of the Helm!"

:csu: for Arbogast, but I'll leave the thread to you, Doug.
EDIT: Never mind - I got bored and went ahead with editing the OP. Let me know if you want me to stop doing that.
Scratched by the rusty metalwork of the orcs, Grimbeorn let's loose upon the two facing him.
