Situation Modifiers:• The companions have surprise
Physical Modifiers (complications): • combat near the river's edge may be hampered due to mud - all PC's will give me an Athletics roll at the beginning of each round. On a failure, they will suffer a -2 penalty to their PARRY rating.

:ooc: Okay - due to this being a SURPRISE round - I am giving Esgalwen TWO shots. 1) for her surprise attack and 2) for her normal opening volley.
I figure she would spot out the big leader, as she knows that orcs are craven when not bullied along.
She will be in Rearward obviously.

Her bow sang and the shaft flew straight and true into the orc leader. The shaft causing him to stagger, which made Esgalwen's quickly nocked second shot a miss.
"WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!" cried the large orc, as he pulled the arrow from his breast. "KILL THEM ALL!"
:ooc: The lead orc is hit with 19 piercing success for 7 :<3: loss, and will need to make a protection roll
You all may make a surprise attack this round and then we will go into normal combat rounds.
:ooc: Orc chieftain protection roll:

His uncle's shield and the Warden's Axe are familiar weights in his hands, and Arbogast's breath is controlled as he sprints forward as quietly as he is able, Grimbeorn at his side and Hathcyn beyond him. Esgalwen has done her work well, however, and the orc chieftain is sore wounded by her first shaft. As he staggers, the lesser orcs fly into a confused panic which is made doubly strong by Grimbeorn's deep, bone-rattling battle cry.
Sparing his own breath, the Fire-watcher lets his momentum carry him shield-first into an orc as the creature turns to face this new, sudden threat. As it reels back, he raises his axe...
:ooc: Arbogast will be in Forward stance until his action in Round 1 - may as well make the most of a surprised opponent!

Hathcyn seeks to maximize the surprise from an open stance.
Crouched in the low grass he spots the archers of the group. His long winter studies of the orcs and the lessons he has learned from the dwarves have not been ill spent. He can guess where the leader and the archers will position themselves. So in the first quick attack he knows he may slay one before the others learn where the danger is and adapt their formations.
Crouched low he rushes through the high grass, strikes his foe, and dashes back so as to receive the rush of the orcs and be in a position to support his friends.

:ooc: That's a nice Piercing Blow and 5 :<3: . If there's another orc close enough for the Axe to Cleave, it'll take the same damage.
I meant Forward Stance for the ambush round. Also I hot post the same time as Paul so I got the red markers of shame on my die rolls.
:ooc: For Arbogast, I mean (in case that wasn't obvious).
Quote... red markers of shame on my die rolls.
:ooc: I am mildly in love with this expression.
:ooc: Doug, I'll spare you a roll if you like and do the Protection test for the orc Arbogast struck:

:ooc: While Doug's busy, I'll sort out the mechanical stuff, if nobody minds?
Hathcyn strikes one of the orc soldiers for 9 :<3: . Grimbeorn delivers a crushing blow to the orc chieftain, breaking his shield and delivering 21 :<3: ! Arbogast downs one orc and inflicts 5 :<3: on another.
Orc blood mixes with the marshy soil of the riverbank as the steel of the Northmen breaks shields and skulls asunder! Two of the foul creatures are slain in as many heartbeats as the battle is joined in earnest.
