The stone smashed into the Hobbit with a savage blow leaving him bloody and battered, but the gem still shone forth its light.  He held his arm up in defiance of the troll drew his blade and rushed the troll in the cabin.

Grimbeorn circles the orc, keeping himself in the fray but taking stock of the situation.  He tries to stay between the freed people and the attackers.  "Get out of here," he calls to them.  "We must focus on the troll!"

:ooc: that is an awesome roll, Matt.

Too bad it wasn't an attack roll.

Grimbeorn rewards 3 bonus action dice for all the PCs to use, although only one may be used by a PC - in this round or next.

Tom, Bandy hits!

The troll suffers 5 END loss.

The words were barely out of the Hobbits mouth when his face curled into a snarl and ran to the dark gap that was the shelters doorway. Stabbing into the darkness he found troll flesh and the light blazed to fill the room.

"Taste my blade and the light of the west foul beast of darkness!"

:ooc: I was waiting on Steve to post so that we would have the attacks in stance order, but I am going to go ahead and take care of Esgalwen now. I removed Weariness for Grimbeorn and Arbogast.

The Hobbit's stone had made a change in the momentum of combat. Yes, the companions were feeling the weight of wounds and weariness but the orc was gravely wounded and Bandy had struck a blow on the troll. Hope was kindled.

"You will die this day, orc, and your bones will bleach white under the sun," said Esgalwen as she maneuvered around her enemy. "I promise you."

Gaushnol gave a laugh, "Many men have said the same, female, and they were proven wrong. It will be you that bleeds into this river. Once my lads get here, you will all be beat...but not slain. Oh no, we will send you to the mountain. And from there...a much darker place."

The only answer the orc received was a quick feint and then pressed attack from the Ranger.

:ooc: Sweet! With a :g:, the orc feels the bite of her steel!

A look of surprise crossed Gaushnol's face as Esgalwen's feint drew away his guard only to have Nimronyn strike at his collar. There was a meaty sound as the keen-blade struck and lopped the head from its neck.

Grimbeorn watched as the headless form of the orc reached up in futility to find its missing head, all the while his weapons clattering to the ground. And then, the body of proud Gaushnol fell - his black blood pulsing out and soaking into the sandy, rocky beach of the ford where it now lay.

Grimbeorn sneered at the filthy corpse and gave it a swift kick.  He began to move towards the place that hid the troll but stopped himself.  Belabored by his injuries, he moved to join the freed peoples.  To the others, "I will help them, I am no use to you right now."

Arbogast hears what he hopes is not the sound of snapping bone, followed by Bandy's brave cry and the troll's bellow of pain.  Rushing in after his small friend, he finds the light of the Stone painfully bright in the small space.  Bandy, though clearly hurt, is using his small stature to best effect against the enormous creature, which flails its meaty arms to and fro in a furious attempt to crush him.

The Fire-watcher sees the boy he spied earlier - lanky body curled in a desperate attempt to shield himself - and yanks him roughly to his feet.  "Rise!  Rise and run," he yells as he shoves the youth towards the door.  Then, as the light of the Stone starts to fade, he positions himself by the door, hoping to give Bandy the benefit of his shield.

"Fall back!  While the sun shines, this beast is a prisoner here!"

:ooc: Arbogast is shifting into Defensive stance and Protecting Bandy.  If the troll wants to spend its last Hate points, I'll spend a Hope to make it target someone closer to its own size.

Meanwhile, an attack roll:

Rolled 1d12 : 7, total 7
Rolled 4d6 : 4, 4, 2, 4, total 14

Incidentally, if we both make it out of the room alive, I'm going to recommend we set fire to the wooden roof.  The troll can either burn when the timbers start falling or it can come out into the sunlight.  Either way, it's in trouble.

:ooc: That's a hit, by my count.  I've previously made a point of the fact that the interior of the hut isn't good for axe-fighting, though, so if Doug wants to make it a miss for dramatic purposes that's cool with me.

Incidentally, everyone with Bandy as their Fellowship focus gets a point of temporary Shadow for him having been wounded.  :csu:  Thanks, Tom.   :>

:ooc: it was bound to happen, lol. Also, I have three rounds of Light if Elbereth left and the troll doesnt have enough Hate left to strike me. Using my Kings blade I can wound him with a great or extraordinary success. Paul, hows that for shameless exploitation of the rules. :). In other words, Bandy may get a chance to be known as the troll slayer.  ;D

The Hobbit avoided the thrashing arms of the beast, and jabbed with his blade holding the gem aloft filling the cabin with light.

"Take the folk from here. I'll keep this beast from throwing anymore rocks. "

As Gaushnol's body fell, Rorin scrambled to his feet and collected himself. He turned and clapped Esgalwen on the back, "Well struck m'lady, the likes of him never stood a chance against your skill with a blade.", he spat on the orc's corpse and jogged over to  Troll's hut where Arbogast and Bandy were battling with the Troll.

"Bandy, Arbogast! We should stay clear of the hut's opening so the troll cannot throw any more stones at us.", Rorin winced and felt his side where he had been struck, "Give me a few minutes and I'm sure we can bring down this flimsy hut."

 :ooc:

Once everyone is clear of the entrance Rorin will begin inspecting the structure for any sort of weakness. A cornerstone that can be undone, a way to displace the roof, whatever.

Question: Since we are still trying to 'fight' the troll, can we use our combat advantage dice on tests to bring down the hut?

:ooc: bandy is inside the hut in close combat with the troll.  The hostages are in there and Abrogast is in the doorway making himself a target for the troll who has enough hate left to hit him. This is where Doug earns his pay as LM, and sorts out this mess.  ;D

:ooc: Bandy going in was a power gamer move, the troll cant hit him and cant throw rocks at him if he is in close combat. Also, all I have to do is roll a six to wound the troll again. Downside is I only have three rounds to do it in.

:ooc: That was my intention.  Getting the kid out of there was a higher priority, though, and I didn't want to a) narrate too many actions in a single round, and b) narrate for another PC.  So, Arbogast is currently inside the hut, though close to the door (the way I'm picturing it is that there isn't a lot of room inside given that most of it is full of troll).  He's in close combat, but is focused on keeping the troll sufficiently off-balance for Bandy to beat a prudent retreat.  The fact that Bandy isn't doing that is somewhat troubling, but I guess we're all allowed our powergamer moments.  :)

:ooc: I don't see it written anywhere that you can, but neither do I see that you can't. Nor do I think it would break anything if you did, so go for it.

Quote from: From the TOR book (page 151...How to use bonus Success dice
Heroes may spend their bonus Success dice to boost their rolls during the ensuing endeavour.

Every successful Battle roll grants a hero a number of bonus Success dice to use during the ensuing fight — the hero will exploit the battlefield or the weather conditions to gain an edge, for example repairing to a convenient spot to cover his back, or kicking a fire to raise a cloud of sparks at the right moment.

I think evaluating the structure to see how to bring it down is as much of a battle/tactics roll as anything else a PC might do. Sieges are built on these kind of tests.

:ooc: Arbogast's attack results

• He hits the troll with a 21 success for 5 END  :<3:  loss

All right - this round is over for all intents and purposes. If you have any other narrative/dialogue to add, feel free but I am going to make the new round.

I have Bandy in direct contact with the Troll, along with Arbogast. Rorin is outside the hut calling to them but inspecting the structure.

Grimbeorn ran to assist the captives - I am going to use GM fiat and say some of them were tied up outside the troll hideout.

Esgalwen is still standing over the orc body, whom she just slew.
