The two Sagath warriors had engaged Fengel too quickly.  He could feel their blades cut through his armour, but that just prodded him on.  His opponents could see the wrath in Fengel's eyes as Cerduil swung through the air slashing at each one in turn.

OOC: Tomcat, could you discriminate which of the Sagath are still mounted?
Title: Re: Round 2 - Ambush
Post by: tomcat on Apr 14, 2007, 05:18 PM
OOC: Hey GoB - they are all still mounted. Those that are in close are attacking with melee weapons and those on the periphery are armed with bows.

I will get more posts up later tonight or tomorrow.

The horses under their enemies made for tempting targets, but he knew of the love the Eothraim had for the beasts.  Taking care of not to hit them, he aims for the furthest Sagath (S2) away to the north.

OOC: As always you guys, I apologize for the delay here - life can get in the way at times.

Secondly, Stefan, I want you to be aware that I may be editing your rolls based on the success of the warg's attack - remember initiative order. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate you guys giving me your rolls so that I can put together the round, just that they may need altered based on number of actions should you need to defend against the warg first.

That said... let's get into this round:

Mounted Sagath warriors defend against Fengel's attacks (2 on right, 2 on left) TN: 22, 26 and 24, 24 (modified TN's for Hardy edge)
AC +7, Specialty +2, PB +1, SB +3 = +13
Sagath on Left:
Action 1: Roll(2d6)+13: 5,2,+13 Total:20+3 (Courage) = 23 SUCCESS
Action 2: Roll(2d6)+13: 6,4,+13 Total:23 FAILED (1 HIT)
Sagath on Right:
Action 1: Roll(2d6)+13: 5,1,+13 Total:19 FAILED (1 HIT)
Action 2: Roll(2d6)+13: 6,4,+13 Total:23 +3 (Courage) = 26 SUCCESS

Éothraim archers attack Sagath Archer on left and right TN 10
RC +6, Specialty +2, (-5 wounded) = +8 (+3)
Action 1: All load arrows
Action 2: All fire -
Roll(2d6)+0: 4,1,+8 Total:13 SUCCESS (1 HIT)
Roll(2d6)+0: 6,4,+8 Total:18 SUCCESS (2 HIT)
Roll(2d6)+0: 5,1,+8 Total:14 SUCCESS (1 HIT)
Roll(2d6)+0: 6,3,+3 Total:12 SUCCESS (1 HIT)

Edrahil attacks Sagath leader who just struck down Bragos TN 11
AC +6, Specialty +2 = +8
Action 1: move to engage
Action 2: Roll(2d6)+8: 3,5,+8 Total:16 SUCCESS

Sagath leader defends against Edrahil TN 16
AC +7, Specialty +2, PB +1, SB +3 = +13
Action 1: Roll(2d6)+13: 5,2,+13 Total:20 SUCCESS

Warg attacks Nain TN 12
AC +7, Specialty +2, Size Mod -2, -3 wounded = +4
Action 1 - claw attack: Roll(2d6)+4: 6,1,+4 Total:11 FAILED
Action 2 - claw attack: Roll(2d6)+4: 4,6,+4 Total:14 SUCCESS Damage if not parried: Roll(1d6)+3: 2,+3 Total:5
Action 3 - bite attack:  Roll(2d6)+4: 3,4,+4 Total:11 FAILED

I need Dirnhael and Galudir's attack rolls and any character defenses thus far, and then I will finish the combat round with the other Sagath warriors' attacks.

Turning his attention from the fallen Warg, Dirnhael spins around on his heel to face two mounted Sagath warriors.
Baring his teeth, he raises his blade to attack.

***

Action 1: Attack Sagath closest to Fengel on map (TN 10).
Dirnhael AC Longsword + bonuses = +19
Roll(2d6)+19: 1,4,+19 Total:24

Action 2: Attack Sagath closest to Durgil on map (TN 10)
Roll(2d6)+19:5,4,+19 Total:28

Action 3 & 4: Sweep both Sagath warriors (TN 10) (third action via Swift Strike edge)
Dirnhael AC Longsword + bonuses = +19 - 4 Sweep two targets = +15 for two rolls.
Sagath closest to Durgil: Roll(2d6)+15: 5,3,+15 Total:23
Sagath closest to Fengel: Roll(2d6)+15: 5,3,+15 Total:23
NOTE: If either of these attacks are parried, Dirnhael can make no more attack rolls this round per Core Book rules.

Next Round Initiative: Roll(2d6)+2: 4,1,+2 Total:7

***

In a flash, Vorandur weaves in and out, the deadly blade flicking right and left before Dirnhael swings the sword in a mighty arc, hoping to finish two enemies in one fell blow.

OCC: Reserving an action to dodge.

Initiative:
2d6=2,2
Swiftness (+5)
4+5= 9

Armed Combat (Blades: Long sword):
2d6=6,5
Nimbleness (+3), Skill Ranks (+6), Speciality (+2), Two-handed (+2), Skill-Maneuver Bonus (+1)
Actions 1 & 2: 11+3+6+2+2+1= 25 Extraordinary Success (Maybe)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Galudir's hands grip the hilt of his sword tightly, he focuses that strength and malice into his lunge.  The blade flashes brightly through a fierce cut into the Warg's hide and emerges dull and stained from the beast's black blood.

OOC: Hey Matt, I have adjusted your second attack result for a MAP -5. I understand how you interpret the Quick Draw edge as an unlimited number of free actions in a round to ready weapons, but I am going to rule that the edge offers only one free action to ready a weapon per round for our game. I can add this to our House Rule thread.

Shawn - regarding your sweep, I want to clarify the note that you wrote for the sweep attack... I interpret this rule from the CRB as meaning if one of the attack rolls you make in your sweep is parried by a target, the other intended targets need not parry because the sweep attack was foiled (thus no more attacks in that action - see illustration 1). It does not mean that you can't use any remaining actions to attack others in the round - make sense? If questions, please ask.

Matt, I do not know if you want to change your attacks based on the hit on you above.

NOTE! If you take damage or use Courage, be sure to mark your character sheets... if you cannot get to your sheets, let me know and I will update it. (Thanks Paul for being attentive to this!)   :> ;D

Roll your defense rolls and then I will set up the new round! That was a big one...  (D

OOC: One last thing, remember to consult Table 9.14 on page 226 in the CRB when making specialized attacks (also reference the official errata). Per the errata, Two-handed attacks are at a two action cost, so Fengel could not have performed 4 in a row.

I am not worried about going back to edit what we have done, it's no big deal, but for the future rounds, just check your action costs.

Nikitas, just so you know, I don't need you to anounce an intended Dodge or Parry. If you are hit at any time in a round, just make the test roll that would best suit the situation (i.e. a Dodge if struck by an arrow; a Dodge or Parry if by a melee weapon). Remember though to include any multiple-action penalties that might be incurred.

If any questions, give me a shout!   ;D

Action 4: Parry Sagath attack (TN 13)
OOC: A sweep, as I understand it, is a special combat move that requires only one action, but imparts a penalty during it's use. So I'm treating this parry as Action 4, but feel free to override that if you feel differently.
Dirnhael AC Longsword + bonuses = +19 +3 Parry, -5 4th action = +17
Roll(2d6)+17: 2,6,+17 Total:25 - SUCCESS

Action 5: Parry Sagath attack (TN 17)
Dirnhael AC Longsword + bonuses = +19 +3 Parry, -10 5th action = +12
Roll(2d6)+12: 6,6,(5) +12 Total:29 - SUCCESS
OOC: Gotta love that!

Action 6: Parry Sagath attack (TN 12)
Dirnhael AC Longsword + bonuses = +19 +3 Parry, -15 6th action = +7
Roll(2d6)+7: 4,4,+7 Total:15

***

Dirnhael desperately fought off the blows from the Sagath warriors as Vorandur almost seemed to move on its own accord. Amazingly, he was untouched, but his chest heaved as he tried to catch his breath and prepare to strike again.

OOC: Sorry I missed that.  Old Fengel is having a time of it with these warriors.  Its time for a new strategy.

The warriors were no simple recruits.  Fengel now understood why his people were unable to stop them.  As another sword bit into his flesh, he knew that he had to pace his attacks if he was going to survive this.  He hoped that his friends were fairing better.

Nain axe cut down the warg then bit deep into the nearby Sagathan as he swung it back around.  He parried the man's first attack but against the much quicker sword his defense fell short.  Once again he silently thanked the god of Dwarves and Smiths that he'd brought his mail shirt on this trip despite his brothers assurances that it would be unnecessary and that the weight would be better filled with something they could sell.  The bruise that the Sagathan left him quickly brought him back to the fight as he prepared to parry yet again.

Hey Doug, just a question, since Fengel is getting clobbered.  On the Sagath parry, are you still including the +2 for being mounted?  I went over the last round because I didn't understand how Fengel didn't even get a hit on them.

OOC: Okay.. that was a big round due to the number of combatants... and the battle is still not over!   ':}

Anyway, I wanted to get back with you all to answer your concerns on this round. We'll start from the top:

Quote from: ShawnOOC: A sweep, as I understand it, is a special combat move that requires only one action, but imparts a penalty during it's use. So I'm treating this parry as Action 4, but feel free to override that if you feel differently.

The armed combat maneuver table in the CRB (page 226) lists the Sweep attack as costing two actions, but allows for a number of individual attacks due to the sweep. Anyway, your post is still correct because your first parry would have been action #5 at -5 MAP, and so forth. So... everything is done right for this round, just remember 2 action cost for future attacks.

Otherwise great job parrying even with those horrendous MAP's.

Quote from: PaulHey Doug, just a question, since Fengel is getting clobbered.  On the Sagath parry, are you still including the +2 for being mounted?  I went over the last round because I didn't understand how Fengel didn't even get a hit on them.

DAMN!! Dude I screwed up there, I thought I had given them the +2 for all combat actions... but no. Should have re-read my own situation post.   ':}

Anyway, I have gone through all the parries of this post to adjust hits. I am not going to adjust for any modifiers for this round that the wounds caused them, but will for Round 3.

Finally - Matt, I was looking at Durgil's character sheet and he seemed heavily damaged - you took 7 points from the arrow before armor reduction. I changed your character sheet to reflect just the 2 points attained.

See you all in the next Round!  ;)

So, in other words, the Sweep move is only advantageous when faced with more than two opponents in melee range. That makes sense. Thanks for clearing this up.
