"We go down.  They won't come up unless the others return and we can possibly surprise them," said Grimbeorn.  He nods at the hatch, "who's first?"

There is a moment of tender silence, for what lies beneath the trap door is unknown, but the peril is clear.  Then Arbogast says "let it be me, and Grimbeorn next.  If the space below is wide enough, we may stand without shields athwart it.  Your spears," he adds, implicitly addressing both Hathcyn and Laeral, "will reach over our shoulders and our shield wall."

Arbogast's one and only experience of fighting underground is the fight in the barrows near the Sunstead, so he is assuming that this will go similarly.  He may be completely wrong

"So be it," replied the great Beorning.  "Soften the light up here, we don't want to give away our approach." Grimbeorn gave a look to Hathcyn so he might keep an eye on the elf.  Noldo she may be, but that doesn't mean that his trust is given easily.
