Gaushnol could see his weapon had opened up a previous wound on the Grimbeorn, and he smiled, "You crossed the wrong river, Viglunding!"

The Beorning knew the orc was right. His arm labored at holding his shield and the strength was leaving his weapon hand. Beside him, Esgalwen took up a stance to defend her friend.

With a snarl, the orc attacked, all the while yelling, "TODAR - THERE IS ONE ABOVE YOU!"

:ooc:

• Esgalwen moves to Defensive and will Protect Companion - I am calling this stance change for round 1

Bad Guys...

• Gaushnol attacks (second attack is only realized on a great or extraordinary result)

• Todar makes an Awareness (Perception) test against Bandy TN 16 to see if he can smell the Hobbit. He also heaves a stone at Arbogast...

Gaushnol's swing was cut short as the pain from his shattered ribs shot through his body causing him to nearly double over in pain. The orc growled a dark curse in a tongue that Rorin could not understand and did not care to. Rorin swung for his opponent's head to finish the fight.

Just as Rorin swung his hammer downward, his foot slipped on a wet stone and sent the dwarf tumbling to the ground. With both his hands holding onto his weapon he could not control his fall and landed heavily on his back underneath the ensuing melee.

Can you remind me what happens while prone and what it takes to stand back up?

tomcat

:ooc: Dude, I can't find anything on being prone - so I am going to go with the Knock-back effects.

A character who is knocked back cannot change his stance and will spend his following round recovering his fighting position, unable to take any further action that turn. If an adversary attacks while a hero is recovering from knock-back, the attack is resolved normally.

I am not going to make it that you can't take any other action, though. My ruling on recovering from prone will be:

• no stance change in that round
• -2d to any action that is taken, once standing
• adversary attacks while a hero is recovering from prone will be resolved normally

Telcontar

Bandy, though no great warrior could tell that the battle was turning against him and his friends. There were times he knew that it was not strength alone that would carry the day. They had been saved by the eagles once, they had been delivered from Dol Guldor by the will of Radagast the Brown. There was no great strength of arms in the Hobbit, but he was desperate to help his friends.

The Hobbit slung his bow and gripped the stone of Ardillon in his hand raising it above his head.

"Work of Aule and light of Elbereth our hour is dire!"

The Gem was held aloft in the hand of the Hobbit and it suddenly blazed in a great light that made the regular light of the drab day seem dim and dark. With a great leap the Hobbit sprung from the roof of the cabin to land by the orc in order to bath their foe and the doorway in the bright light of the pure stars.

Athletics if its needed.

OOC: Going for a HATE point suck on this guy.
By spending a point of Hope, Bandy may cause the light in the stone to burn with the pure light of the stars. This light flares for a limited time - a number of rounds equal to Bandy's Wisdom rating (4) and a radius equal to 5' plus the number of feet equal to Bandy's Wisdom rating (9feet). While it burns, creatures of the Enemy cannot engage the bearer in close combat unless they spend 3 Hate Points, nor any around him within the radius of light, unless they spend 1 Hate point. Once the Light of the Stars goes out, the stone can be lit up again only after a number of minutes equal to Bandy's Wisdom, and at the cost of one point of Hope.
THE GAME MUST GO ON!

Grimbeorn is so very worn from the recent fighting and hard travel.  "How will we ever overcome this?" he thinks desperately.  He keeps his weapon and shield upright to fend off attacks but he takes a moment to gather himself.

Eclecticon

At first, Arbogast thinks that the troll's rock has blinded him, but then Bandy's words ring out, and he realises that it is the magic of the gem - and that he has just barely deflected the stone with his shield.

Quickly, he considers entering the but to do battle with the dark thing, but decides it would be folly of the worst kind - not least because the boy within could easily be harmed. He also sees no way to open the roof and let the troll petrify in the sunlight - but he is no craftsman.

What he is, is a warrior - not mighty of arm perhaps, but among the most cunning of a cunning folk.  He will keep the creature focused on him and spare his friends the cast stones.  He will sap is resolve and will to fight. Sooner or later, their numbers must tell against the orc.
