So, so far, I calculate the following:

For the Moon Stone Search:

Round 1 [TN 12] = 17 with one  :%:

Round 2 [TN 16] = 11 with one  :%:
If I'm allowed, Tate will spend a point of hope which adds +5 to the result, yes? I know this is somewhat wasted, knowing the result of the final round, but if we we're rolling these one by one, I would have definitely spent a point of hope.

Round 3 [TN 18] = 24 with one  :%:

Final Round = 9 with an  :~~:  ... Tate loses badly. I hope it is to Ethal.  :>

For the Lays and Song Contest:

Round 1 [TN 12] = 19

Round 2 [TN 16] = 27 with two  :%:

Round 3 [TN 18] = 28 with one  :%:

Final Round = 9 ... Can he use his Merry AND Minstrelsy trait to win?  [< If I have to pick one, it'll be Minstrelsy. Tate is a practiced singer and can read a crowd. He knows exact what they want to hear.

Sorry for the delays, guys.  New update coming soon.

It's been brought to my attention that people could be finding the 'old English epic poetry' style of the intro posts a little... opaque.  I'll put up a clarifying post in a bit, and of course you're always welcome to ask questions.

I was assuming it was a narrative opening of sorts and that we would get something additional to respond to that was in story.

Yeah, that's the intent.  I'm still working on something to hang player action on to, but work is bullshit crazy.

Hey! Just letting you know that I've seen the update! Looks great, Paul! I'm stupid busy until tomorrow (Thursday) evening. I hope to post something up then. If you want to move along, Tate will simply be observing, listening to the conversations of the Beornings around him for information about what's happening, who the dead men are and why they matter, etc. If he sees Esgalwen, he may try to come alongside of her.

Otherwise, when the time comes, he will offer his services to Grimbeorn.

Hey All,
It Family Day weekend up my way. I'll be gone with the family until Tuesday.
Peace,

More to come in the morning.  Right now, I have a heap of washing-up to do.

Tom, have you given any thought to what kind of enemy lore Hathcyn had?

No. I was actually thinking about that yesterday too.

The listed options in the book didnt really support the characters background and feel. I meant to ask you what you thought were acceptable alternatives.

I see what you mean.  Without wanting to restate what may already be obvious to you, maybe looking at it a different way might make the choice easier?  I don't know how everyone else feels about the Callings, but to me they are something deeper than a D&D class or a profession – like the name suggests, a calling is something buried deep in the psychology of the character.  Hathcyn's background has a great big 'push' factor – his accidental kinslaying means that he can't go home without doing something appropriately heroic to make amends – but pushes can be overcome.

Callings, I think, are 'pull' factors.  They're the drive that most people in Middle-Earth don't possess that keeps dragging them back on to the road and into a life of adventure.  Background push factors can be why a character starts wandering around stabbing orcs – Callings are why the keep doing it.

With that in mind, almost any calling could be appropriate.  I'm even comfortable with letting him develop one organically during play (as Arbogast kinda did).

Just to be clear. Splitting the party was not a Loremaster decision. The division was something the players put forward as an idea.

As much as it makes narrative sense is this something we want to undertake from a META perspective? Invariably one thread will move faster than the other and or will require double effort from the Loremaster.

I am not doubting Paul's ability to deal with it, but as players are we willing to accept the game impact of splitting the party over the narrative in game reasoning?

The way I see it is, although there are three potential story threads here, I am sure Paul is only wanting to pursue one right now. Not a story railroad thing - as loremaster's we like to think our games are open sandboxes - but still, we prepare a primary thread of story details.

So, my point is let's explore them all to keep with our current character edicts, but one of the threads will have to take precedence. Paul will either drive that, or we will put him under pressure by choosing the one we want to pursue.

Not being a META-guy here, but I think I know the arc this is going to follow...as I have the books and have perused them. This being said, I don't remember anything as to where the tale goes.
Esgalwen [♦♦♦♦♦○]     :<3: 10/12       :+~: 8       :<>: 16/18
Nimronyn [Sindarin Pale gleam] superior keen, superior grievous longsword - orc bane
Foe-slaying - when attacking a bane creature, reduce Edge of weapon by value of bearer's Valour

Shadow bane [when in Forward stance, add 1 success die to each attack]
Skirmisher [if carried encumbrance is 12 or less, increase Parry by +3 when in close combat stance]

Well for me in regards to the situation, there were the potential issues to deal with outside of the home of Beorn and the political one at home.  I picked the NPCs for the halfling cuz thegns grumbling and right thing to do.  Sent party members to River to investigate deaths cuz the men were important but grimbeorn needed to be in the North to deal with the vigs and search for dwarves cuz he gave his personal word.  Besides big G needs to appear wise and decisive, and gave us a chance to reconnoiter and reconsider.

Looking at your character sheet, it says that Grimbeorn is down to one point of Hope!  Obviously, that isn't right.  It should be at least 6 (we regained three points when the Werewolf bit the dust, one from the Fellowship pool and another if he had a Fellowship Focus who wasn't wounded).  I seem to recall Arbogast being his focus, but I'm prepared to be wrong.

Has anyone else not updated their sheets after that battle?

Not for Hope I guess.  I don't recall us discussing how many or the divvying of Fellowship hope.
