Edrahil follows the others towards the enemy and as he does, he incants laying his hand upon his now bare sword. Suddenly the blade bursts forth a bright light that sweeps away the darkness around his comrades. With his sword flaring, Edrahil presses the attack and strikes at one of the oncoming Easterling riders.

Camentir seeing that he is a burden to Fengel and his horse, shoves off of the back of the steed landing skillfully though his years belied him. He lifted the Dwarven-made longsword lent him by Durgil and blocked an Easterling sword from slashing into him. He maneuvered between the horses and men aiding his comrades as he could.

Dirnhael brushes off the weak attacks as Anduring's steel deflects the attacker's blade with ease.
Seeing the rider he dispatched fall from his mount, Dirnhael smirked back at Camentir.
"Camentir," he shouted while gesturing towards the riderless horse with Anduring, "your steed, sir!"

OOC: Hey Matt, after looking back over my post, I realized that I never edited the cut/paste and the guy that attacked you actually missed. I never included the -5 wound penalty in my math and so you did not need to make any parry.

But, that brings up the discussion... can an Unarmed Combat manuever be used to block an Armed Combat maneuver? I can see highly trained martial artists doing such a thing, but I wonder here. I can find nothing in the CRB or Errata/FAQ/CRF to say otherwise... but I am stumped on how to rule on this in LOTR.

In my game of Darkhaven, we have character classes (monks) that may fight unarmed and they have a parry skill with their arms. So again I am in a quandry.

Here is an excerpt from the game Core Book that I have written:

Parries, are they always possible?

There are going to be times when a player looks at the GM and says, "How did the flesh glob demon with soft squishy arms parry my metal sword?"

A very good question and one that needs a very good answer! Many creatures and some characters go through life defending themselves by hand, foot, claw and bite. These individuals do not have the capability or the desire to wield a weapon. Animals are a perfect example of this; all that they have are natural weapons. The Monk is a perfect example of a character that may abstain from using weapons and rely solely on his hands and feet. In either case, how is combat performed and results found when facing individuals wielding large weapons? How does an unarmed man or an animal with no hands parry a sword without it being hacked off or broken? How does a swordsman parry a biting attack? The combat system in this game creates a more realistic flow but it must also be given a little descriptive freedoms.

In the stated questions above, a parry result from a monk might actually be him open-handed and pushing away at the weapon arm or weapon of the attacker, all the while he is sidestepping. The animal may not parry but have the dexterous ability to dodge each incoming attack, and in the last example of an incoming bite attack, perhaps the swordsman brought his weapon in defensively and the creature pulled away its attack. Perhaps a monk likes to defend with metal bracers and uses them to parry away blows.

There are countless ways to explain the combat when one individual is not armed, so just because it might seem unlikely, the game must allow for certain "gray areas".

Now after stating all this, there are some things that cannot be parried. There are certain creature attacks that may be dodged only. The rule of thumb to use here is the size value of the creature. Any attack made by a creature that is larger than the defender will always cause a Knock Back Effect (see later in this chapter), but an attack that is made by a creature that is three size ranges larger are not able to be parried. A quick example is that of a Red Dragon coming in to swallow a victim whole – you cannot bring your sword up and knock that one away. The GM also has the liberty to determine if an attack cannot be parried.

I think about creatures such as a bear or tiger... it would use its large paws to bat away incoming weapons, and I believe they could do it and go unscathed. But can a man?

I don't know... everyone's opinion please. I set up another poll under General discussion.

I just need Fengel's parry rolls and we can end this round.
